  1. At least with an 808 chassis number you know it is probably a genuine 808.

With an RX-3 these days, it can be anyones guess as to the true identity of the car. Could go measuring bumps in the floor plan or counting spot welds like all the experts on Ausrotary suggest is unique between RX-3 and 808

Whoever buys that shell is a mug. Yeah, nah people cut chassis numbers out of the cars they belong to with the intention of putting it back in another day all the time... yeah right

Just because a JP signs a statutory declaration doesn't mean than chassis number belongs to that car. JPs rely on people telling them the truth, nothing stops someone making a false statement to get the statutory declaration

  2. I kid you not, 12 months ago 60k bought someone from Australia this (off a chap I know);

    dfYvvWZh.jpg

Genuine Series 1, JDM import, cleanest and most original RX-2 Coupe I have ever seen. 100% original, original 12A twin dizzy engine (70,000ish kms from memory!), immaculate interior and complete inc all boot plastics and original boot mat. It has had a respray due to a couple of spots of rust appearing in lower sills. Now resides in Australia.

Such a dumb idea selling it, but we all told him that.

Selling the green one on Trademe as anywhere near original or 'restored' is just plain nonsense.

Cars got original paint mate. 53000 genuine kms so of course the paints going to look respectable. My brother picked it up personally. Hasn't been repainted.

Missed the 53,000 original km part, very nice then.

Kind of keeping it hush on where it was found but had been for sale for a year before we picked it up. Is a hard place to export from aswell but there's a honey pot of old mazdas where it is. 808 coupes for 2-5k and quite plentiful. The genuine Rx's don't pop up too often. There's a lot of dreamers too wanting big coin for 929s. Haven't seen any rx2/capellas come up yet. Seen early model rx7s with 2L piston engine conversions a couple of times. Guessing not a lot of knowledge regarding the wankel motors when they shit themselves. Also see some bizarre Frankenstein nosecones on the 808s.. I'll try dig up some pics. Also rwd 323s were sold into the 90s there and look ridiculous haha.

Left hook never going to be worth as much in nz. Just like kebab shops, one person starts doing it, nek minnit market flooded with everyone doing it.

Did you see it in person? Looks repainted.

First time seeing more than one rotary at once in one place other than a car show in years. Also two s6 RX-7s inside.

There was also a 2 door Datsun 1200 wagon and a MKI GT Cortina two door there too.

  5. I have been buying parts from various manufacturers for about 20 years. More and more I am finding people sigh when you mention a car from the 70s or they just say they haven't made bits for those for years (without actually looking whether the parts are still available.)

Some places just don't care about anything old. Passion for old stuff is dying just like fixing things yourself.

Need more people like Scott aka brdflu at Nissan, he cares he has the passion. I'd rather deal with people who genuinely have an interest.

In 30 years the only Barrys left will be members from this forum.

I did have some manuals from that foxed website but forgot the address. Cheers for the info.

  6. Someone on here know someone in Mazda parts at a dealer in NZ that actually knows / cares about rotary cars?

Used to be a top chap working out of the Tauranga dealership, don't know his name of if he is still there......

  7. Still cheaper than an R-100, just 2 x rusty factory wheels gonna cost $1000!!!!

Also can anyone explain to me the reason for the price explosion for factory rotary R-100, RX-2, RX-3, RX-4 steering wheels? Currently around $1500-2000 for a tidy as one.

Are there significantly more Mazda cars remaining than there are factory steering wheels (causing massive demand?)

Looks like bidding has already started... up to $50,100 so far... what do you reckon it will fetch..?

Heaps! Nice car but that boot floor replacement messes with my OCD.

  9. Some late 90 early 00s scanned classics with the cool companies of the time:

Rota Act, Rota Motion, Rota Max, Kiwi RE, WSR - West Side Rotor, missing some Rotaholikz (before Mad Mike was cool) bombing

    vy7CRprl.jpg

What happened to this NSU Spider? 500cc single rotor, first mass produced Wankel Rotary ever, only 2300ish sold... Only one in NZ?

My S1 RX7 was still running a paper airfilter and thermal reactor when I first purchased.

Local 90's Upper Hutt 'rotorhead bush mechanic' [Tristain wakefield AKA Twisted if anyone recalls] said ' cut the belt mate ' when he seen it ..of course k&n filter ducted to front grill and coby headers were the first enhancement within months...even before fitting an alarm lol.

    Priorities back then.

No wiring the secondaries on carb to be mechanically operated instead of factory vacuum operated as well?

    Result = Rotary vetch equivalent.

Well prob not but it was cool.

  11. An old bike of mine. CB200 tank on a Cb125 frame with GL145 swing arm and GL145 front end (ex-bucket racer)

    NgD39F0l.jpg

From memory the CB200 tank was too wide at steering stem end, and longer so not a bolt-on option.

And same deal with CB50 tank (tank longer + didn't fit over frame but fitted at steering head end...)

    pgOm6ztl.jpg

Aaaaand, same again with early model CB100/CB125 tank (think someone on here might actually own this bike now? Saw it at DGR Wellington 2017 with the same pink tank and butterfly decal)

  12. In today's lingo  various "stages"  have been developed into "its got a 13b stage bro" whatever that means.

To me, referring to mods by intake port type (extend, bridge, J, PP) makes far more sense and gives a better idea of performance. Besides 99% of rotaries in NZ are going to be stage I , changing the exhaust to extractors and a K&N will give 20% increase in power. When the hell did you last see a Mazda factory thermal reactor exhaust header? ie anything other than extractors on a non-turbo rotary?

Engine modifications referred to as Stage I-IV have been around forever, it is not unique or specific to Mazda Rotary. Most cam shops still refer to their cam grinds as stages...

I was lucky enough to hear Bill give a presentation on his experiences and knowledge during a tour for that book post release.  The man was a legend and a great new Zealander with real kiwi ingenuity.
