  1. If you can wait a couple of months you might be able to try Simon's ZG flares... We're making a trip to Auckland when the 1UZ and flares arrive at the ports - may work?

Also, that Dolomite was at the last round of the Manfeild Winter Series - I'll go find them at the next round (July 4th) and see if they have a mould or if they know where to get them.

  2. Nah not the AW with the cage, I bought my old Green/Gold one back as a daily.

The throttles thing will be worth a look if I can find an altezza intake manifold to test the theory with, but it still might not fit. The runners are 45mm ID and the flange is matched to the throttles, I think it's pretty good and can't see it being any more restrictive than a factory manifold.

  3. Yeah man it was a huge effort to get it running in time! Wouldn't have been possible without the help of Jase (eke), John (CXG) and a tuner that works too hard (Saturday night tuning ftw).

They're silvertop throttles - 43mm ID at the flange face and mine have been machined out at the top to take a ~50mm ram tube. Brendan Duncker was using the same throttles on his Beams with large cams, headwork etc so they should flow enough for me. I'm going to either get a set of very short (25mm long) tubes made up or cut a set of Weber ones we have to get more clearance above the bellmouth and build a divider tray/airbox for a better air supply. Pretty stoked that my AW11 had a TRD panel filter in it when I bought it back, so that's going in there to protect the redtop.

    ... Got yours sorted yet? :P .

  4. Was it TRD springs or something?

Yeah TRD springs and KYB shocks... It still feels very lively in the front end, so I'd say it's going to be mint on the twisties.

Ed - CXGPWR has all the S/C stuff now and may be attempting to twin charge something....

  5. I think staying NA will be the best bet... A long time ago the plan was to have this as a quick club car/daily driver and it might be a good idea to re-instate that plan.

So it might end up with mild cams, LSD (looks like that's found now), Good road tyres, 15x8's and a tidier body.

  6. It's all good. My car is just getting shabbier and shabbier which is really getting to me.

I can't justify the expense to make it tidy. Should follow suit and install stocko-ish motor and sell.

    7agte a something else.

Nah hang on to it... You'll struggle to make your money back and there aren't many AW's of that spec and respectability in NZ. Or take the red one back to super stock spec and 7AGTE a rancid one that you can thrash and not worry about :P .

Shiat. Good to see you got it sorted so quick! Nice effort.

That's all thanks to CXGPWR for being the man and Napier-Ben for being a wiring machine.

  7. aww11.co.nz

Things are everywhere. Keen to go for a burn in one and kill myself into a badly placed pole

    :D Please do.

Yeah Ben that drink bottle is choice! I was also happy with the complete roll of insulation tape and the bundle of black zip ties... Oh and the brand new fuel filter!

  8. It's all good mang :D ... Caused a lot of confusion at certain times but we made it in the end. I forgot how well this thing handles! It makes you want to drive it ALL the time.

At the end of the day those wheels and tyres are still worth something, so I'm not worried.

**EDIT** The list that you wrote for the truck driver was hilarious!

  9. Ok, so this car was my original play around car from Highschool... I owned it from 6th form until I was 19 and learned the ways of the race track behind the wheel of it.

    100_8658.jpg

Eventually it was off the road and was destined to be a race car, but the AE86 coming up for sale changed that. I sold this to Mike-e and got rid of all the parts that were going to go in it (Beams etc).

I haven't had a good road car since.

So a little while ago, E sent me a message to say that it was going up for sale and that I had first option... So, of course, I said yes.

Between the time that I sold it and now, E had fitted a supercharged engine from an AE92 GTZ... But had rushed it and it was in need of wiring and a piping tidy up.

It arrived in Palmerston North on Friday in a sorry state of repair... The wiring was a mess and the engine smoked like a train... It was blown-turbo spec amounts of blue from the exhaust - I don't think the valve stem seals existed. It didn't feel like it went very well at all and the front lip fell off on my way home.

Things didn't feel good, so I parked it on the lawn and left it alone while we worked on the race car.

After the race meeting on Sunday we took the AW to Johns and started to look at the wiring... I wasn't keen on rebuilding the SC engine and John had a Smallport 4AG, ECU and loom sitting there and he offered to swap. I accepted that and we got to work.

We worked away until Tuesday afternoon and had the car running, lights working, gauges going (apart from the tacho) and it was up to WOF standard. Shit it was hard work. A friend of mine ended up scratch building a whole loom and replacing the interior loom because nothing that was on it was worth keeping... The fuse box was burnt out and the loom had a short through numerous wires. There was a Crocodile clip jammed into a female spade terminal and a lot of other issues... All sorted now.

Another issue we found was that the tyres were too tall on the front (205/50/16) and the inside edge of the RF tyre was through to the belts. This is quite annoying an a real shame because the front tyres are Toyo T1R's... What a waste! The LF is still usable because there was less camber dialed into that side but the RF would have popped if driven another few metres. HOW DO YOU NOT NOTICE DOING THIS MIKE? The RF tyre was jammed HARD against the spring seat of the RF strut... I drove on it with no idea that it was rubbing and now it's fucked. Good one...

All in all I'm not surprised about the state of the car and mostly can't believe how little thought has gone into everything that is on it. It's ok though, we've got it back to original, NA Smallport working order.

It now has WOF and Reg and needs a wash and a general tidy up... Pretty good going for a couple of days work though.

The smallport is a bit rattly, so I'm getting a set of big ends and mains chucked at it on Friday.

    Doorts on.

  10. It's really hard to say what the gains have been from the modifications because I've never seen another redtop beams run in RWD form on the same dyno as my car... When Roman ran this engine in his MR2 it had 127KW in FWD form using the factory ECU and a Toms exhaust manifold IIRC, but the dyno would definitely give a different reading to the rolling road and had less drivetrain loss.

The adjustable cam gear on the intake is custom made by Jase (eke_zetec_rwd) and I haven't set it up yet... We just guessed that full advance would be ok :P . The exhaust gear is off the old motor, as are the dizzy, throttles and all electronics.

For this season it will get more tuning to try and find more power but apart from that I just want to drive it and get used to the new power delivery... and hopefully chop a couple of seconds out of my P.B lap time.

  11. The car went really well! Apart from one thing... The battery was dead flat so we had to jump start it before each race and I had to make it didn't stall on the line (which made me pretty nervous). I stalled in the dummy grid during qualifying and ended up sitting that session out.

Race 1 was damp, but not raining. I was starting last on the grid due to not competing in qualifying. Next to me was a red Evo2 and in front of me was a Star car and another BEAMS powered AE86. Awesome. We started off and I had HEAPS of wheel spin off the line and dropped back a bit, but stuck my foot in it and made a couple of spots into the first corner.

I got behind the other AE86 and we left the Evo2 behind. The silver AE86 supposed to be 200HP ATW and it is an Altezza Beams with TRD inlet manifold and a similar exhaust to mine. My car had a lot more than his in the corners, but he had the straight line advantage. This meant I had to be on the chase for the whole race and was able to experiment with a few different angles. During the 6 laps I attempted to pass on each corner at least once and was still behind him during the last lap... As we headed in to Dunlop - the fast (and last) corner at Manfeild - I hoped he would brake early, and knew I should go deep. He stuck to the inside to defend the line and braked, I waited, braked late and carried more speed through the top of the corner. We were side by side by the time we got to the middle of Dunlop with a papers width between us. I got the jump and had a faster corner exit speed, leaving him to try and catch up on the way to the finish line.

Race 2 was wet and fairly uneventful, but still really fun. Having four or five 500HP cars come past at once, mid-corner and in the rain was an experience though!

Race 3 was VERY wet. My screen fogged up and the blower did barely anything (damn Nick stealing my Pert 2in1 "defog"). Once again, I was having a good battle with the silver AE86 until lap 3 when my screen was about 80% covered in fog. The only combat for this was to crouch down and look through the mail slot of a gap I had and follow the other 86 around the track :? . I couldn't see the edge of the track (let alone the end of my bonnet) to try and make a pass... We circulated slowly, but with full concentration and finished in the same order we started.

  12. Wow, what a weekend!

Last week it was all coming together slowly but assignments meant that getting it done in time for the race meeting was looking unlikely... We managed to get everything in order and had it up to the stage where all that was needed was to build the exhaust system and bleed the cooling system on Thursday - Easy right?

The exhaust was coming together mint, but I needed to get it built by around 3pm to make sure there was time to get it on the Dyno. Got to the last bend and had it tacked up sweet... Then when I pulled the system out to weld it the tacs snapped but I thought I could make it work. Ended up not making it work and the mig gas ran out shortly after that. FAIL. Cut and bent the system to make it fit as a temporary measure and tried to bleed the cooling.

I had an assignment due the next day and needed to finish it. Then John (CXGPWR) showed up for a chat we had a look at bleeding it. Shortly after that we noticed that the TAPTAPTAP the engine was making was not a header leak... It was a head noise. I gave up. John said "GO DO YOUR ASSIGNMENT, I'll fix this". So I did and he spent all night removing my cams and figuring out what the issue was. It ended up being an easy fix. THANKS JOHN :D .

Spent Friday doing non-stop uni work and had decided that we weren't going to make it to Manfeild in the weekend. Had a laxy day and went to bed early, then slept in until 1. Lovely.

Saturday afternoon John arrived at my place again to tell us how his Corolla went at the Test day... I had just repaired my exhaust and painted it and all that was left was to bleed the cooling and Dyno tune it.

Got it bled after some feckling around and we went to see Rodney (my dyno guy) at his house. We mentioned that my beast was ready to run and he said "I'm heading back to work in 1/2 and hour to bleed the brakes on a race car, come along if you want to quickly tune yours".

So off we went at 8:30pm, unloaded the car and slammed it on the rolling road. We dyno tuned until 11PM!

The result of our quick tune was 115KW ATW. This doesn't sound like much but all we did was a safety check to make sure the engine wasn't going to explode. Within the 115kw, however, was a 20KW gain at 5000rpm and a 20kw gain at 6500rpm woth 80NM more torque, so you can see the potential of the new setup.

Graph - Blue = Old red = New.

    So we went racing.
