If your hubs are the same spline as AW11 rears then the SW20 axles that that gearbox originally had will fit...

If the mounts are similar to AW11 then you should be able to find a combination of factory parts that will work for the gearbox side of the mount. I was going to make new front/rear gearbox mounts and a new cam belt cover engine mount (The one that mounts by the drivers side strut).

As for brakes, I'd look into doing an SW20 or ST185 twinpot upgrade on the front and get a bigger master cylinder.

Good luck man! It would be great to see this happen.

  2. Mount it upwards man... I think the drawbacks outweigh the benefits in this case. Being road legal, the filter will get filthy in the downwards position. It shouldn't make to much difference if your intercooler works well.

Looking good though! It will be cool to see a lick of primer over it.

You put your gen 3 motor back in?

Good work on getting it running again!

Found another beams for reasonable coin, bought it and inserted. It lost power on the dyno from not being as good as "the" beams... So the plan is still to rebuild the dead one (and add a few bits). It's still a lot of fun and does skids.

Also, we've always dyno'd my car in 3rd gear on the rolling road (as opposed to 4th that most tuners use), so all of my readings have been low. I'll get him to do a pull in 4th next time - then the figures will more more comparable with other dynos.

Slammed the front by 30mm yesterday because a few of us were bored. It looks a lot cooler with a little bit of tuck, but I'll have to pull in more caster and cut the flares/bumper to make it work. The rear shock mounts are going to need a bit of massaging to allow the heights to be balanced and the 4-link needs to be played with to get the pinion angle set right... Unsure if I'll bother doing this before the next round of racing, but am quite keen to have it lower.

  4. Thats so lush. However, this topic has come up once or twice on forums before, and people seemed to approve that there would be a lack of torque for use in a car. Will be interesting to see how it does once it's running.

They actually work quite well in a small car. There are 2 - 3 rally cars in NZ that do very well with Hayabusa engines... Anything below 800kg will move OK and 6 gears makes up for the lack of torque.

    That 240 project is sweet!

  5. Do you want wheels for looks or performance? The steels might look cool, but more un-sprung weight is always a bad thing.

There are a few cool wheels to choose from at the moment. DTM Banzai's, AE tek and the Konig's you posted a pic of would all work and look good IMO.

Have you tried sizing up a set of normal ZG flares on the Gem yet?

  6. Sounds essentially like NZGT for the South Island, since iirc it's not held down there?

That's pretty much the case. GTRNZ (GT1/2/3) is run by "the motorsport company" (MSNZ) who run in with the IRC classes during the summer months. It would be possible for the south island to pick up the same rules as the GTRNZ classes are nationally sanctioned - but MSNZ would probably not like that.

There's a lot of politics when it gets to the upper levels of any motorsport. This is a bit on the shit side, but you need to find some GC to influence the world for the better.

    Maybe motorsport needs an Obama?

  7. Blew the engine up in the 86 and bought another beams.

Spent the next 3 weeks jamming it into the slot to make it go by swapmeet weekend. Succeeded but it needs a lot of tidying up... There's still oil in the engine bay and under the car from the old motor. Diff needs to be refreshed with a set of bearings and there are some other small niggles that need to be sorted, but it's going OK.

The AW11 has been sitting on the lawn with a BHG for 3 weeks... Might get onto that soon.

  8. http://www.nzta.govt.nz/resources/factsheets/27/exempt-vehicles-from-registration-and-licensing.html

    Quote:

    When is a vehicle exempt?

The following information explains the different classes of vehicle exemptions.

    Exempt from being registered

The following vehicles are exempt from being registered and licensed for road use:

vehicles used on a road that is closed temporarily by a local authority or other body, for holding special events

powered vehicles that are temporarily being towed without the use of their own power

trailers designed exclusively for agricultural operations and used on the road only to or from a farm, or for inspection, servicing or repair

trailers being towed by exempt Class B vehicles.

Vehicles exempted from licencing under this category are also automatically exempt from WoF.

  9. It's a big grey area.

If you go by the letter of the law it isn't legal, as the car would require wof and reg.

    But....

There's a statement about towing that says something like "powered vehicles under tow do not require registration or a warrant of fitness". The loop hole with whether and A-frame is classed as towing.... I think that A framing a car is safer than towing it on a rope, but you may need to argue the point if you were pulled over while A-framing.

A lot of guys do it, and it's pretty safe... I'm going to build one for my car and just take the risk. It might be a good idea to print the rules from the LTSA site just in case.
