  1. IMO stay away from anything below 160A.... They get less and less useful below this.

The welder in the first post is a generic chinese unit that have come into NZ under several different names. I used to sell the same ones ones under a different label and TBH it's best to stay away from them. It was a common occurrence for circuit boards to die and they're not easy to get replacement parts for.

As for liners - that one won't be easy to do as you need to de-wire both ends of the torch assy before pulling the core out... And there might be more damage by the look of the cable near the hand piece.

I'm a fan of this one - it's a Mig/Arc IGBT inverter and has a lot of adjustability. They're small bit pack a punch.

And these ones are a decent budget welder + parts and accessories are readily available. They're about $600 new from memory.

  2. Hey guys,

The Daybreaker Rally is making it's comeback on Saturday October 30th 2010

We need more block marshals, so if you're keen to help please Email Jeff Braid (Chief Marshal) on braidz@xtra.co.nz OR send me a PM.

The job is very easy and gives you a good chance to get close to the action. Our marshals have always enjoyed being a part of the rally and it remains one of the hottest topic amongst club members. I understand this is reasonably short notice, but if you can share 2 hours out of your Saturday we would love to hear from you.

Our website is down at the moment, so for more information head to the Motorsport Manawatu Facebook Page. The website will be back up and running soon! ( http://www.motorsportmanawatu.org.nz )

With your help we can make sure the rally returns with impact - locking in it's future.

The Automotive Direct Rally Manawatu is Returning!

Run by the Manawatu Car Club over the years this iconic and gruelling event still holds a special place in the Club and with competitors from all over the country.

The 2010 Automotive Direct Daybreaker Rally Manawatu is the final round of the Geartech Central Region Rally Series. Its format and route slightly are changed from the previous four Daybreaker’s events with the rally n...ow starting in Feilding. The competitors will contest seven gravel special stages over 142km’s before finishing back in Palmerston North. The service park (based in Apiti) will see the cars making three trips to the small Manawatu village.

As always we will give the competitors a variety of stage lengths, with the shortest stage being the 7.75km McBeth Rd, the longest Pakihikura at 42km and the exciting and challenging final stage being Ridge Rd at 34km. This is the last gravel rally for the year so we are expecting a big turnout.

Documentation and auditing will be carried out on the Friday night or first thing on Saturday morning, with a possibility of out of town auditing for some competitors. There will be no ceremonial start this year. The cars will report to the rally start at Automotive Direct in their seeded start order.

As always we are greatly appreciative of the support of the residents on the roads we use, and the Daybreaker's sponsors who give generously to assist the event to run.

  3. So it starts from completely cold and goes to completely hot at the same rate as your revs over 3000rpm? Or it goes up to halfway and no further?

Check the connection with the temp sender. Pull the sender out and clean it up, make sure it has a good connection with the head (that's how it's earthed). If that doesn't work, steal the sender from a corolla that you spot up the road and try it.

  4. On toyotas the issues is normally a bad connection on the temp sender, which makes the gauge wiggle and turn off all the time.

This sounds like you have a clogged radiator or an airlock in the system that is making it heat up under load. The waterpump could be on the way out too.

  5. Soviet tank motor in the rear, gokart storage up front?

    Cool wagon bro.

I've got a fiat twin cam engine sitting here.... Has large cams and some other nic-nacs.

I have a mate making a mid engined 2 door fiat 128 - he needs a new engine... is it for sale?

Yep, it was built by Gary Haar quite a while ago and I'm going to ring him to find out the fine details. Never been run. PM me.

  6. Cool car man! That engine/chassis combo will be a lot of fun when it's done.

Just a word of warning - those Jamex seats aren't too great and flex a lot when you're sitting in them. You'll be more comfortable and more confident in something solid like a Racetech.

  7. Its so hard to know where to stop.

Tell me about it! But if you don't take a few compromises you will never have it finished.

Here's the manifold we made for my leaned over application:

As you can see it uses the factory adapter with no intermediate plate - doing this makes the process a lot quicker and easier. I don't see why you wouldn't use it when making a new manifold.

It has the same taper as the port and is perfectly round at the exit which means you don't have to change the shape of your tube before the flange. If you want to go bigger than the standard runner dia it will be easier to machine this out than it will be to make a runner that changes shape - you can use 4 pieces of straight alloy tube and weld it to each flange. This makes it really easy to get the ports matched too as you can bolt the mani to the plate and die-grind until it matches.

We made the throttle flange on a normal mill with digital readout - you set up the measurements for one throttle first, then make holes, then find your centre mark and move along to the next one. It took ages to set up but Jase (eke_zetec_rwd) made it look easy. If you're using blacktop throttles you'll need to mill a little extra at the bottom to get the "kidney" shape and can port match both flanges after that.

I'm standing my motor up soon and the plan is to do the same thing again with straight runners.
