  1. The AU is a great car mechanicaly. But they do seem to rust badly underneath. No idea why.

Personally i would want the Cortina, but in saying that ive never had one and thats probably why.

The falcon is good value, but they are always pretty cheap for what they are. Only thing good about that falcon is being an XR6.

Poverty spec AUs will often sell for around 2-3k, perhaps not as good condition as that one appears though.

If i was going to get a newer falcon i would want a manuel EF XR6

  2. ATF is fine to use as a Hydraulic. In fact its better. Its  what we use for high heat and loaded hydraulic systems.

Can you use the power steering pump im not sure, but tipping a flat deck with wood on it wouldn't be to hard for a hydro system surely?

  3. You will find most GL5 mineral oils have alot of ep additive in them to get them up to the GL5 spec. semi and full synthetic GL5s will have far less EP additives to bring them up to spec, with the better technology inherently more resistant  to high loads. Less EP additive = Less aggressive on your brass/bronze etc.

  4. Yeah thats right. ATF has dye in it as it would normally be clear. Im guessing its so if it leaks on the road or somthing. i think its more of a pseudo law that in reality means nothing.

Another thing that you can try is a bike engine oil as it had a wet clutch additive to prevent 'slipping".

Half the issues with older goxes now days is the oils are getting to good and too slippery. Best place to start is with an oil thats at the spec that the box is made for.

    I dont mean a "75w90 or 80w90, i mean the spec. GL4, GL5 etc. It makes a massive difference.

is the same deal with engines but thats a whole other can of worms.

  5. You want a multi purpose tractor hydraulic/trans oil.

Has wet brake additives that will get our syncros gripping like a school boy. Dont tell them its for your car gearbox as its illegal as its clear.

Other option is some atf or if you want a "gear oil" get a GL4 75w85.

How much is that redline stuff? Everyone goes on about how great it is and spec wise i cant understand why. I want to try it though.
