The 4M is the standard engine boss, they also came in Cressidas of similar age yes

You can see some of that corrosion I was talking about

    picture140t.jpg

Found that when the bearing fried itself it also buggered the fingers on the clutch diaphragm. Looking at AP’s website they don’t sell these replacements but offer to rebuild for you(for a fee of course) if you send the whole clutch back to them. Considering that these clutches are in excess of NZ$25K I would imagine their rebuild fee would be fairly scary also. So in good ol Kiwi fashion Adam made his own. Old one’s on left – new on right

    picture150t.jpg

    Few pics of the clutch

    picture149af.jpg

    picture148n.jpg

    picture151qt.jpg

    picture152jy.jpg

    And the flywheel

    picture154na.jpg

    picture155e.jpg

Also decided to pull the sump off and check out the condition of the internals etc while the motor was out. Everything looked and measured like new in there which was a pleasant surprise. So put back together. Few head photos for you

    picture141xi.jpg

    picture146z.jpg

And installed a new water-pump (actually a ford item) as the old one was leaking.

    picture147u.jpg

Also while it was out and no pressing racing deadlines to meet we thought we’d give the front struts a birthday and learn a bit about them in the process. Looking at these pics it’s pretty clear to see where the money went in these cars – pretty serious bit of kit

    picture117.jpg

    picture118qu.jpg

    picture132ot.jpg

    picture134jc.jpg

    And the rear

    picture188u.jpg

    picture191d.jpg

Put it back together and went for a test run at Hampton Downs. Were going good then it started smokey badly out the exhaust. As we had just finished checking all the internals we were quite baffled as to why tho. So back home again and pulled the head off, couldn’t see anything wrong so motor out………again.

Still couldn’t see anything wrong so had another look at the head. Upon close inspection we found a small hole in the wall of one of the inlet ports where they had broken through when flowing the head. This had been glued up but must have fallen out with age and/or vibration and so oil was flowing through this hole and straight out the exhaust causing the smoking. Relieving on one hand but frustrating as on the other

Small hole in the right side of the port

    picture195f.jpg

So we re-filled the hole and thought while it was out we would give the engine a bit of a birthday. New bearings, rings, re-seat the valves, new valve guides, gaskets and a bit of plating and anodising etc.

Hi' date=' I’ve been planning to start a thread on this car for a while now and am finally getting my a into g. I purchased the car from Rick Micheals in Invercargill back in January 2010 who bought it into the country with a collection of other serious Euro race cars. Since then my brother Adam and I have been trying our best to iron out the issues and get it performing at it’s peak. We run the car in the SS2000 series and also NZ Historic Touring Car meets at NZFMR to date.

RouseSport 1998 Toyota Corolla AE111 BTCC Super Tourer

    300HP 2L 3SGE with reverse head technology

    Slide Throttle Injection

    Dry Sump Lubrication

6 Speed Sequential DBR box with electronic flat shift

    Carbon/carbon clutch

    Penske Dampers

    In-car adjustable anti-roll bars

375mm vented front rotors with Brembo 8 pot callipers

    Custom Kevlar bladder fuel cell

    Mill-spec wiring looms

    Loads of carbon fibre

Basically the car has got all the fruit you could ever dream of and has been built to the top spec but as the car was sitting around for a long time and salt air from shipping to NZ corrosion had set in on pretty much every bolt and bearing and we have spent the last few years trying to iron out all the teething issues.

Before going further I would like to really thank Adam for all your extensive knowledge and help in sorting everything. Wouldn’t be possible and/or doing it without you!!

Also thanks to Andy Rouse for your help, for sharing your knowledge and steering us in the right direction when asked, much appreciated.

So when we first bought her home:

So put some avgas in it would run but the Pectel ECU was locked and un-tunable, made sure most of the important bits were ok and gave it a base dyno run

    picture015as.jpg

As things were so competitive in the Super Tourer age the data was top secret and unless we could get hold of the original tuners dongle and passwords we couldn’t access anything. Even shipped it back to Pectel (now Cosworth) UK to whipe with Rouse’s endorsement but still no joy. Long story short we spent the next year (part-time only as we all work full-time and have families) trying to sort the Pectel with no joy so we ripped it out and installed a second-hand Motec M8. Also during this time we played around with front guards

    picture037ak.jpg

    picture031wi.jpg

    picture047zb.jpg

    And started to make moulds

    picture080tt.jpg

But then decided they looked to home-boy and quit them. Bolted the original modified guards on and decided they didn’t look too bad.

    picture074oc.jpg

Also Adam made a dry break adaptor so we could actually put gas in

    picture092xg.jpg

    picture093p.jpg

Bit of a reako on the throttle bodies

    picture019c.jpg

    picture022t.jpg

    picture021ccl.jpg

    picture027jc.jpg

    picture028be.jpg

Reco’d a set of wheels and sourced some tyres

    picture039rp.jpg

    picture043qh.jpg

    picture124b.jpg

Also thought while we’re installing a new computer we might as well change to individual coils also, so bead blasted the works magnesium valve cover

    dsc00942vj.jpg

Adam NC machined a new centre coil plate

    dsc00941c.jpg

And made a new loom to suit – to same mill-spec standard of course

    dsc00918cz.jpg

Put it back together, got it running and tuned on it’s new E85 juice, got it MANZ homologated, stripped the decals, gave it a polish, set all the dampers at 50% and went to Puke for a test run

    dsc01145v.jpg

    dsc01158k.jpg

    dsc01157rz.jpg

Went great all day. We didn’t have the flat shift working for this day so was clutching for gear changes but nonetheless we were finally driving it and after getting a feel for it lapping in low 1.04’s straight of the bat. With this result we decided to have a run in the following weekend’s NZFMR at Hampton Downs. Unfortuatley the clutch centre release bearing decided to let go during practice on Sunday so didn’t even get to race anything. Back onto the trailer and back to the workshop for more repairs.

To get at the clutch in this thing the whole engine/box package and basically the whole front end needs to come off which is a bit of a major
