Holy shit this is giving me 2006 flashbacks, pissing about with a dash engine is truly punishing (I somehow avoided hydrolocking my engine, though the whole thing was full of water at one point when the MPI unit leaked coolant into the inlet manifold courtesy of my cleaning old gasket from the manifold with a paint stripping disk...so remember there are bigger morons than yourself out there).
One suggestion, if you're still running the mental DASH injection setup - get the injectors tested. A couple of mine were misting but were comparatively shit. Rooting for ya to get this on the road.-

Back when I had my Mk6 Golf Gti (270hp at that stage), I got smoked at the lights by a leaf. Past about 30kmh I deleted it, but jeez they go alright off the line.

Yeah ok, no recore then. That's insane, I think I paid $150 for a new core on my old Celeste, circa 2004. I'll drop by Silverdale Radiators this week and see if they have any suggestions.

Got stuck into this this over the weekend. My brother is back in NZ over summer, and I'm lending him my "new" Pajero so this thing needs to be functioning by then for maximum boating times.
Stripped front end off and began removing the caked on wax courtesy of the previous owner. Plan is to prep all the surface rust, prime and then a satin black topcoat
Worst of the lower half rust
These spots are the other areas of concern - will get these dealt with professionally
Front bumper assembly and undertrays. The trays are insanely heavy duty compared to what is on my newer Pajero. Some rust throughout all of these so it'll all get stripped, treated and the satin black treatment.
Staying organised
My partner got stuck into cleaning the interior. Headliner was transformed. Decided to just live with it as is (aside from more cleaning). It's all functional, just a bit ratty in places.
Radiator looks sad... adding it to the list. Assume getting a new core in them is still a thing?

Very nice, love the mid century stuff.
We have grandma's coffee table, a similar style, needs to be refinished. What did you use to strip it back? Just sand paper?
It was painted inside with some unknown type of paint, so I used a waterbased paint stripper on that and for the varnish on the outside. Then just got the orbital to work, started with 80 (careful if it's a veneer), then up to 400 through a couple grades. Danish oil and 000 steel wool to finish.

Picked up this sideboard in 2021 - dates from approx early 60s. My place is a little older, but all vaguely true mid-century. It was rough as guts and therefore cheap. I enjoyed the sculptural handles and legs, and needed a project for my new shed.
Stripped it down completely (not needed and caused issues but I learned a lot)
Reassembled slowly - the top slabs needed to be run through a local joiner's sander as it was warped.
Danish oil or nothing
Complete - this took many months realistically.
Whites Aviation ftw - my house appears in that ancient aerial photo of Whangaparaoa
Humble abode - Don sofa and armchairs (resto inbound on these). Girl skate decks "Chair" series, with Eames chairs featured (also have the rare Chocolate "Modern Homes " series. TVs not welcome here.

Hi all - have uncovered some rust in the passenger side A pillar. Was considering investing in a welder to give it a crack but seems a bit OTT. Anyone got a good contact based in north Auckland/North Shore? Or want to do a cashie?
Cheers! Will have an update after the weekend on the old gal -

Welcome to Browntown, population shitty old Mitsubishis
Interior stripped as far as I'm prepared to for now. Deep clean of all this brown and tan goodness - what does everyone use for cleaning interiors?
Bonus Marcel Breur racing chair
Washed it - looks deceivingly good, and how good is the purple lockwood next door?
built this and went for a fish instead of Pajero work
Stay tuned for more cleaning and avoiding rust. Missus is keen to do some fresh door cards - thinking a horrific brown houndstooth could be cool.-

Hey team, wondering where everyone sources interior upholstery fabric from? My partner is keen to get involved and help with tidying the inside up. She has tracked down an outfit, but it looks $$$ for what we are thinking (vaguely 70s/80s houndstooth or similar).
Washed the thing over the weekend and uncovered more crustiness - a welder will be a purchase in my near future so any recommendations for a beginner appreciated. -

Yea now its kindof... elegant?
Clean and tidy. God knows cars of this age are busy enough - anything that is reductive from a styling perspective is a plus I reckon. Though appreciate some prefer the 80s-ness

Made a start on stripping interior tonight after a bit of a fuck up of a day at work
Carpet out - maybe 3 or so suspect looking rust spots but nothing terrible. Almost 40 years of grime and filth and the car was bad too
Reckon the carpet is a write off - what's the go-to thesedays for replacement? Knox still the go?
Old boy gave me a few parts. Shit they love old crap and just sticking extraneous shit on cars. My boat was the same, just barely functioning crap everywhere. Plan is to minimise all this stuff.
Speaking of boats - went for a fish before work out by Tiri and nabbed a few nice snapps
Next move is a deep scrub of the inside, find a matching driver's seat in the delicious 80s brown/tan, clean up the surface rust and then start on the door cards/roofliner etc. Alongside this, remove both bumpers and see what is hiding beneath.
Interested to hear what others think about body lift vs suspension lift too. What's the go team?-

Still punishing yourself with the 80's mitsis eh, love to see it!
Those Paj's ghfwii
Yip, a bit niche/moronic.
I reckon they have a neat shape - clearly pretty rudimentary but kinda charming. Not ugly, not beautiful, just workhorses and look as such, -

Yeah what a frother eh. Rolled a MK6 Golf GTi for a minute, otherwise it's mitsys all the way down for me. Partner thinks I'm mental but as long as I promise to fix the house for her she seems alright with it. Probably a familiar story in these hallowed pages.

Fair bit of water under the bridge since I was last here with a project - I think 2008 with my ill-fated Sapporo. No need for too many details, but after a decade of studying and then building a career, I finally am in a position to have a project again.
Picked this old gal up today - a touch of rust about but nothing terminal. A mild resto-mod is on the cards, replace all the flogged stuff, give it a slight lift, some mildy chunky tyres, keep it simple and pootle about the place towing my similarly aged boat. Retro feel, none of this punishing business you see on the mall crawlers everywhere these days. Inspired by what the Land Rover guys get up to - something that will age well and suit my advanced years.
Has the 2.6 Astron with a 32/36, 5 speed and goes pretty well - torquey and stinky. No plan to do anything to the engine aside from tidy it up, perhaps a non-rusty exhaust and service it well. I drive a Gen 4 Paj (silver one in the pic below) as my daily so I am a real tragic... I also own a 1940s ex-bach that needs even more love than this piece, so progress will be glacial I imagine.
Pretty much forgotten everything about old cars so no doubt this will be next seen aflame floating off the Hibiscus Coast (where I now call home). If someone wants to make a discussion thread, feel free but I won't be offended if not.Parked up in its new home - the place where projects come to stall

Probably my ultimate daily driver, nice work man. Crazy that you're mid-field with this, still feels like EVO IX were the fastest thing out there... must be getting old!

Ha. You called?
I know what you mean though.
Different groups seem to have different problems. I find the ones who never let me change lanes or pull out of an intersection are 50+ y/o women who always look like they had lemons for lunch and grip the steering wheel like their life depends on it. Her Husband probably doesn't go near her dried up old ham wallet any more or ran off with the secretary so she's permanently angry at dudes and keeping them out of "her" lane is most important

Very few car forum posts would include motel/hotel hardware and connectivity photos. I suspect weirdo french car forums would.
Love it!-

Bumping this back up,
For those of us who don't have access to, or a desire to spray massively hazardous shit in their garage, but would also like to deal with treating rust and bare metal, what are the best products and processes others have used?
It's interesting to read about it all, but also easy to get confused/lost, so a little clarity in an NZ OS context would be cool.
