  1. I started with a beige car as well.... well not so much a car, but a MIGHTY Datsun 720 flatdeck!!! Great fun for learning oversteer in with 60psi shoved in the rear tyres.... also aught me the fine art of burnouts with a home made line lock.... (ie. crimped brake lines)

  2. Same as jerm, as thats what my haynes manual says to run.

Ahhhh the old Haynes manual. I use mine as a guide.... you simply NEVER need Alfa Romeo special tool number 20987.56234567XC.... and there's always an easier way to do things (ie. leaving the engine in place to do the heads... Haynes says it cant be done!).

  3. After fucking my turbo by using running in oil (SAE 30) in my rebuilt engine I wondered what sort of oil everyone uses in their rides?

Because my car is an old engine but with a turbo it makes choice difficult. Currently I use Pennzoil 20w 50 multigrade which is their replacement for their "performance" brand they used to have.

    Whats everyone else using?

is that what they call "MultiVis" or something? I used to use that in my old 1500 and it seemed brilliant! Ran great pressure, and didnt seem to fluctuate a great deal which I imagine indicates good consistent oil flow.

Now with the 1700 I'm using Pennzoil Semi-Synthetic (cant remember the grade) and it seems to work just as well....

  4. i dont see why people under-estimate the power of the 'K' series engines, if i had a digi camera, i would take a picture of my rear guard, just to show you what rubber is left, iv taken most of it off now.

Pffffrt if I reversed my old 2K Starlet fast enough and was brutal enough to shove it into 1st it'd happily spin the treads if you got enough revs up...

  5. with my 1600 i was surprised how easy it went in aye , aside from the cam being 180 degrees out  , it was sweet , engine was really tight when we first started it up but after about 3 days it started wearing in , goes mint now aside form the occasional miss at start up and the constant backfiring in the exhuast (even does it at idle!!!!!) , its running reconditioned 28/36 webers and even though theres a flat spot on the first throat its gotten up to 160kmh wit the second throat about 1/4 open so im happy , makes drifting a shitload easy and thoughs damn maoris in there stupid 1987 civics and integras can suck me now mwhahahahahahaha, next up after new shocks (they might aswell be just springs there) a paint and panel and .....2litre mwahahaha

things i did to the 1600

    new bearings

    new fuel pump

fully reconditioned head been crack tested

all clean in a kero bath (wow the oil pump was aluminium colour i thought it was black lmao

    nicely honed

cleaned all the carbon deposits off the bloack top etc , opened up all the coolant passages blocked by rust flakes

Sounds exactly like what I did when the 1.7 went in to my car.... except one of the cams was 180 degrees out, and the other was bang on! All the marks lined up and everything, we were stumped for a while on that one!

  6. Loven the group B rally cars

Audi quattro, Ford RS200, Lancia Delta S4, Lancia Stratos(So its not group B but still cool), Nissan 240RS, 3 different spec Peugeot 205t16's, 2 different spec renault r5's, all thats missing are the Toyota Celica GT-T, MG Metro 6R4, Lancia 037, and the Porsche 959. Not to bad.

Yeah the 037 would have been sweet. My fav Group B car of all time.... fav rally car ever actually. Stratos is kind of a precursor Group B car when you think about it.... it was the very first car built specifically with rallying in mind, built strictly to the Group 4 rules I think it was....

The Volvo 240GLT made my flatmate go into fits of happiness... he has this unhealthy obsession with Volvos.

I like the idea of decking out the Mirage Supershist (see it.... in white with the JDM mirrors???) wirth TE37s and fanging round Tsukuba......

  7. You'll probably find Polk audio is far more well known as a brand associated with studio monitor or home audio speakers! They make some good quality stuff... also teamed up with MOMO to make the MOMO range of speakers as well.

  8. A lot like the NSU RO80's.

Loved worldwide for the futuristic styling and revolutionary engine, but ultimately doomed because of the lack of R&D done on the rotary engine.

Took the recovering japanese economy to do it right

That and the oil crisis of the 70s...... lack of fossil fuels and rotary engines don't seem to go hand in hand.

The Ro80 was by all accounts a brilliant car when it went.... the chassis etc. was well up to the engine!

  9. Well if anyone gives a rats arse, I'm very shortly going to be embarking on a decent audio install this time in the Sud.

The new CD player is in (Sony CDX-F7700) so I now have 3 sets of 4.5V RCA preouts to play with, and the brand spankers Alpine Type R 6.5" component speakers turned up courtesy of the good folks at Paul Money, on Thursday!!!

All I'm waiting on now is the 2 Rockford P110S4 10" subs, a Rockford P2002 50wrmsx2 amp for the front speakers, and a Rockford P3001 300wrms mono amp for the subs..... not long to go now though!

It's all going to be connected up with $260 worth of good low resistance/inductance OFC cabling, and it's gonna sit in a carpeted, boxed boot like you used to see in modded cars until fibreglass and vinyl took over....

Stay tuned for pics once I get the gear and get started!

  10. Very nice mate, looks and sounds like a top job!

You're in Christchurch right? Are we likely to see this beats out a Ruapuna munching on some turbo Japanese tail???

I'd love to have a look sometime dude, if you're keen on showing people!

yeah it will be going to Ruapuna at some stage when I've got everything ironed out and run it. Yeah you're likely to see it on the streets now and if you see me parked up just rock over. I don't invite people around to my house until I've met them aye...no offense I'm sure.

No no entirely understandable... I don't even let people near my garage if I'm selling a car, I just meet em out on the street.....

  12. Ideally in a RWD you want the rear set up a tad softer than the front, to combat oversteer.

However other factors like front wheel camber and castor can influence handling in a big way, so maybe adjustable camber/castor kits could be an option? I'm sure there's a range available for Escorts from the likes of K-Mac or Whiteline (Aussie brands)

I have adjustable shocks all round, the rear end is stiff as buggery (FWD) and the front a little softer to stop crashing over bumps. Also have adjustable bottom arms for camber etc so with a bit of fine tuning by someone who knows whats up, it's reasonable inexpensive to set up suspension.
