  1. Gary you are right it will look better size wise with 27s but god they are horrible haha.

Those cheng shin tyres are poos they lasted one ride for me. Skidded right through to the canvas after ripping a sweet skid that wasn't even that long! They do smoke up pretty mean though. Then I tacoed my 27" araya rear because HUGE QUADZ. In hindsight It was probably a lost cause trying to rebuild with them because they were already a bit wonky. Get it true and the spoke tension varies heaps. Scratched head and hope for the best haha

  2. Building a wheelset using steel 27" rims is the worst idea ever, I'm sorry. They will be heavy as fuck, you can't get any good tyres for them anymore, rim brakes on steel sucks, even more so in the wet. Even a cheap 700c fixed ali wheelset will be miles better. You should be able to get a built 700c fixed/free hub rear wheel for $100 and a reasonable front from some upgrade happy roadie for like $50. Way cheaper & easier than trying to build a set. Leave that till you have some baller deep track shit to build up (Campag Atlanta '96's on Sheriff Stars (dreaming haha)).

Also, fuck single speed! Man up and ride fixed ya big blouse. 48:17 is magic ratio, even for wellington. I used to ride that ratio on my commuter all over AKL, no problems anywhere. Plus it looks cooler having a big chainring on the front. Or use the big ring off some road cranks and roll 52:19, also legit. Its all about maximising skid patches with fixed ratios. If that feels too big then go 42:17 but realise that your gear ratio directly relates to penis size. Old road cranks are sweet cos they are usually 52/42 which is way better than the 52/39 on most modern road cranks. Actual track cranks are 144bcd but this means that the smallest ring you can run is like a 45T.

Leave a front brake on it until you learn to skid properly (which will only take a few months tops) if you ride semi regularly. The you can throw that shit in the bin. Get some good pedals with cages too. MTB plastic double cages & fabric straps probably work the best but aren't as legit as old steel track/road cages and leather straps.

Then on the way home about an hour from Taupo one of the exhaust headers decided that it didn't really like being attached anymore. The locknut clamping the header on decided to make a break for the tarseal, cue millions of decibels, farm animals running away and even worse fuel economy.

A full new set of decals has also just turned up so I'm going to whip of the fuel tank, oil tank and side cover and get them tidied up and repainted before throwing them on. Exciting stuff.
