Any clues on how to shiny up an aluminium cherry pitter / garlic press that I accidently on purpose put through the dishwasher?

Acid / nickel salts bath / DC?

Many hours with wet/dry and a buffer

  2. For not touching the metal surface I've had good results with paint stripper. You want to hang the frame up and shower it in really nasty, and I mean knock out an elephant with a wiff nasty, paint stripper. Coopers works well. Then water blast off after leaving it to sit for a bit. Scotch bright can be used to polish up the metal surface a bit

  3. It doesn't surprise me your fan is on a manual switch as the thermo switches on those pack up quite often. Both mine and my brothers ones are on manual dash switch. the water pumps on the 058 block are also known to die and produce crap water flow. chances are you're radiator is half blocked also. My crown wagon randomly tried Chernobyling itself on one day, took the radiator to get flushed and they said it was very blocked and they were surprised it was cooling up until then. I can do the same trick I did to my brothers one and rewire it to run a stand alone circuit with a 2 stage switch on the dash if you want. You'll have hi and lo speed but you'll have to remember to keep an eye on the temp gauge and turn it off when you shut the car off.

As far your oil burning goes put a liter of Morey's heavy duty oil stabilizer in it with the next oil change. I used this in a 40% mix for a Camry which burnt enough oil to be considered 2 stroke. bit of Morey's reduced the consumption by 2/3.

Are you trying to start it without the ignition barrel/switch and the instrument cluster?

If so, that won't work as the immobiliser is part of that and will stop it firing/running.

ah, i thought seeing as it had an aftermarket one in it that wouldn't be a problem. i'm not using the guage cluster/ key just putting power directly to the respective circuits.

  5. Help! I need somebody,
    Help! Not just anybody,
Help! You know I need someone, help.

I'm banging my head against a wall at the moment. I'm trying to get my 1.8t engine started out of the car for testing and the bastard wont start. No spark, No fuel out the injectors, Nothing.

    This is my wiring diagram

    http://vwts.ru/electro/wd_p_98.pdf

the engine stuff is page 18 and 19.  I've powered up all the wires shown to come from the relay panel and am kicking the starter over by putting 12v on the solenoid. I have power at the coils and injectors and I've tested the injectors for operation.

the engine is an 1.8 Turbo AEB out of a Passat. Any help is appreciated and if someone could come round and point out the mistake I have made that would be awesome.

  6. Alright then. Sit down, buckle up, and put a cork in it 'cause this is gonna be one hell of a ride to a clean car.

    Intro:
This was born of laziness and needing to wash the car in  a short space of time. Because of the nature of the chemicals being poured on the car I wouldn't advise doing this to a car with good paint. If your car is 5 toned like mine or you really couldn't give two shits about your paint then proceed at your own leisure. Due to my lack of taking photos some (Most) of the pic are random ones from google.

Step 1: Your going need a dirty car.

9/10 times its going to be yours but you might be feeling generous or evil (take your pick) use your mates car for this exercise.  I'm driving my mk2 golf to 4z tomorrow so it's the lab rat. Its best to do this in the shade but I did it in the sun because that's where the tap and power point was

    Step 2: Assemble some items.

You'll need to find a water blaster with a detergent pickup, heavy duty industrial citrus cleaner, wash n wax, and a bucket/ large jug. optional items include a sponge, chamois cloth, and tire shine.

NB. Photo not of actual items.

Step 3: Hook up the water blaster and start blasting!

Blast all the dirt and road nastyness off. Now is also a good time to blow all the moss growing on the rubbers away with high pressure water (yes I had to do that). Don't forget the wheel wells. If you're game you can include the engine bay in this too.

Step 4: Shower the car in citrus cleaner

Use the detergent pickup on the water blaster, crank the ratio up to full (In my case it was 5%) and spry the entire car several times and leave to soak for a couple minutes. We use this stuff at about 10% to clean the workshop floor and if you're not careful it can take paint off so don't leave it on too long. The cirrus should remove any tar, bugs, brake dust, stubborn dirt, grease, oxidized paint and loose clear coat. At this stage you can wipe the car with a sponge to really get a good clean but that takes time and removes the touch free element. I'd probably keep this away from your alternator or any electrics if your car is EFI.

    Yay one of my car.

    Step 5?: Rinse the car.
Flick the water blaster back to high pressure and have at it. Those with common sense will focus on the dirty bits like bugs on the front and dirt on the sides. Those without common sense do whatever and let me know how you get on.

Step 6: Wash n wax time
Mix up a solution of wash n wax. I put a glug in a large jug and added a liter and a bit of water. Then repeat step 4 but switch out the citrus of wash n wax solution and keep going until the container runs dry. This mainly gets rid of any citrus residue and adds a bit of shine. Nothing like a bit of shine on your engine. Once again you can wipe the car bla bla bla.

No its not the same photo

    This Better?

Step I cant be bothered scrolling up to find out: Rinse the car again
Flick the water blaster back to high pressure and have at it. Those with common sense will focus on the dirty bits like bugs on the front and dirt on the sides. Those without common sense do whatever and let me know how you get on.

    Step Last one: Drying
There is two ways of doing this either spend ages with a chamois or blow dry. For chamois consult someone else. For blow dry go for a drive. 100ks is best but 50 will do. Usually when the bonnet is dry so is the rest of the car. Stick to roads that are pretty clean because otherwise you're being counterproductive to the cleanliness of your car. Once dry you can add some tire shine to the tires and bumpers to add another level of .... something.

    6.jpg

Bonus step: Bailing out the floor.
If your car leaks as much as mine then now is a good time to sponge out all the water that collected in the foot wells. If you're smart like me then you'll have removed the carpet to make the job easier and you can label the job as cleaning the floor.

So there you have it. one nice clean car. Done right this will take about 25-35 min from setup to pack up, much faster than a standard wash and cheaper than a gas station car wash. If you do follow this guide post your results and if you see me or the car at Levels tomorrow then come and say hi ( To me, the car wont say much).
