It's not all lost, iirc all live plates were computerized in 1996 (or thereabouts). I have the full listing of many thousands of plates from (iirc) FL to GH on a USB stick.

    Bugger I wanted to know about FK4949 & GR7007

  2. Busy over the next day or so getting all the bits together to drop out to Greg for the trial fit up. Lights, Grille, Bonnet and hardware, Door hardware and NOS door skins, windscreen panel grill, front cross member. Bit the bullet and bought a new 3.77 CWP from Burton’s as well. I bought an alloy diff head hosing ages ago and a rebuild kit with all the bearings seals and collapsible spacer so will have a crack at setting it up myself. I mean what can go wrong haha

^ Good move, 15" is like a donk wheel for a Triumph.

They won't be worth huge bucks owing to their narrow width, and 4-stud. Tridie fans are generally of the 5-stud larger car variety so the 7's and 8's and wider fetch decent cashmoney.

Very true I have 14x8,s on my Statesman as I wanted  to keep it period correct 70,s in the wheel department. Nice original 14x8,s go for 1K al, day long. Most people with 13 4 stud tend to go minilights.

Seen at Maidens & Foster Auctions in Napier. It's being sold on Wednesday. Really nice solid example but was parked up in 2003/04 and the rego is dead. Looks like it was stored inside. Hopefully somebody saves it. It's a NZ new 280E with 297k and has service books etc. Apparently was driven to the auction and ran well. I asked what they were expecting and was told 600-1000 but no reserve

    Farout.

Back in '91 i sanded back my 1600 sport and took it to the painters. They painted it in 2 pack acran (whatever that is) and charged me $800.

I had a Mk 3 Zodiac repainted in the early 80's for 200. It was enamel I think and I supplied the paint, sanded it and masked it all up. I remember masking it up and leaving it for about a month and what a total mare removing the masking type. It had all gone hard and stuck like superglue.

Its probably like any other profession that seems expensive from a outsiders view, there will be more costs involved than people think to do a good job... rent, (especially in auckland) power, workshop costs, staff, materials, a good booth, fixing mistakes, bla bla bla

How many wealthy car painters are there? Ive never met one I can remember,  apart maybe from guys who own big panel shops

ROI on all the plant, H&S compliance costs the list goes on...plus car painting is labour based and you are paying for their experiance and the use of technology. Quality doesn't come cheap esp in a labour intensive business and if you have a very good reputation there's always  a dollar factor to pay. I don't know any wealthy car painters either come to think of it.

I'm in no way doubting you or the quality of your painter but to be honest I always struggle to see why it costs so much. Yes, you pay for quality, but 20k when the hard work has been done?

If you knew how a paint shop really worked you'd question it too.

Totally agree when the materials are probably around 5K max which leaves 15K for labour at 100 bucks per hour is 150 hours for 1 man which kinda passes the sniff test
