Mop Head

Saw this pop up in a buy/sell/swap group on Faceballs last week for next to nothing. I ignored it for a few days and decided I'd go see it if it was still there on the weekend. Low and behold! It was. So here she is:



She was running on pick up but was last used on a farm so the engine and such was super dirty. 



Slowly took the plastics off. Plan on ditching the rear plastics but I'm gonna try fix up the front legshield, or source another one if possible. Sadly the fs50 legshields seem to be few and far between. Not even reproduced anymore, unlike the fa50 or fz50 ones which can still be sourced pretty easily. 



And that was as far as I got on the day of pick up. Got back to it last night and she's running again. Planning on tidying up a few things like the wheels, exhaust, filter. Get her road legal shortly and ride through the summer before giving her the royal treatment next year. 
 

Pulled the block off, will probably end up diving in deeper as the kick start shaft is a little shredded. Not bad condition for 43 years of effort from the old girl.

About $150 landed I think, haven't actually done the conversion yet. It'll require some 'manipulation' to mount upto the pw80 block/head I'll be using but should do a nice job.

Might sounds crude as hell, but seen a bunch of guys using two thick strips of Velcro to hold their seats on. Seems to work a charm and sits super flush. Not so clean if you wanna keep it beautiful under there, but easy cheap and does the trick. 

Awesome! Cool to see more c50's being built. Leg-shields are pretty easy to get if you need a replacement. I may have about 5 coming here in the new year. 

The dudes in the UK are right into the custom cubs and they have the best place for checking out how to's and locations to buy stuff. Camphill Chop Shop is the group on facebook. 

I'm using an aftermarket swing arm on mine to fit a 4.5" rim in the rear, you can go about 3.0" wide if you keep the standard one. Keeping an eye on the build! Feel free to send me a message if you have any questions about parts etc. 

Waiting on black spokes and polished hubs to arrive. I won't be pursuing the disc brake option with this bike. Due to the leading link suspension, the disc would end up being more of a show piece than anything with my plans, the last thing i"ll need is more weight.

Same to report as the above, went a month back to a VTNZ in AKL North Shore and the young guy said "Hey, don't you need to put mopeds through compliance now?". I replied a super confident "No." He shrugged his shoulders, put it through the computer and gave me the plates, all while being over seen by some old grumpy looking guy. 
 

Gentleman I was with even sorted 2 other v50's that didn't appear anywhere on the system before 2011. He suddenly 'rememebered' what the frame numbers were and sorted them out later that day at the same place with no issues. 

The dude didn't even leave his chair, my bike was in the boot outside, he didn't care. 

Just seen this on the Spacebook. The engine is from a KTM300, dudes from Auckland I think.

The exhausts are available to see online, I went down a deep dark maze of Malaysian and Thai websites but none of them ship internationally. Ended up just sending a pic of what I wanted to a friend who lives in Malaysia. He called his local supplier and picked one up. I can get more sorted if need be. It's about $150 all in with shipping. Typical, shipping is more expensive than the part, but still cheaper than the genuine exhaust. 
 

Man this makes want to actually pull finger and get mine registered haha. This is going to be pretty bloody rad when its complete. 

Think I may have to get myself one of those exhausts too. Are they available only somewhere?

The world needs more v50's, would love to see yours being built mate.

So! Things progressing on this a little. Sorted a head/block/cylinder kit for the bike from a PW80. Will have some fun with that when it arrives, looks like the last person who had it running wasn't too fond of a filter so the carb and such are filthy, hope to rip it all apart this week for a proper look inside.

Got a friend in Malaysia to sort an exhaust for me, didn't cost the end of the earth. A genuine v50 exhaust is $168 with another $122 for shipping. This is about $50-70 excluding shipping, which I don't imagine will break the bank either since it's the actual cost and not inflated via eBay.

The bike is virtually stripped, just waiting for a date with soda blasters.

Haven't had much time for the c50 at the moment, just part hunting and twiddling thumbs waiting for them to arrive.

No example really, I like the colour scheme of the nitro c90 above. But I have an idea in my head I hope to accomplish before I change my mind again.   

Would do black rims, spokes and hubs if I was to go the spokes route.

Yeah I'm thinking the same ones. They are a bit wider too. 1.60 front and 1.85 rear where as the others are 1.40/1.60. The extra width would be nice.

Yeah! Cub toilet seats are all the rage in the UK at the moment. I think I'll stick with the bench seat. Haha.

Trying to decide on new wheels for the v50. Usually I'm a spoke guy through and through, but I've been considering a mag option as I have access to them.

After scoring an epic deal with my bunch of parts, I finally find a spare hour this evening after work to start tearing the mighty v50 back to her shell.

Got a whole bunch of stuff being finalised today with the order for parts. Hopefully will get time this week to tear it down completely.

As you can see, a few Mate parts going into it. Colours will be different for a few things. But now that's out of the way it's time to focus on the actual situation at hand.

Going to finish an order with the Thai Yamaha dude next week so I can get this old girl running like new again. 
I've noticed this is part of the y80/y100 Yamaha mate family. In Thailand they actually produced a Yamaha Mate 111 model for a few years there and they still exist. Had me thinking.....

I collected the v50 today. First 2 stroke project for me and I plan to keep this one a bit more standard than the c50 build (see here: http://bit.ly/1OkbVkS).

After a wet drive home and barely a drop of oil as she lay on the side, it was time to get a couple of pics before the light disappeared.

I've got a new legshield and few repro items coming for it shortly. It's fairly solid so it'll make for an easy tear down.
