  1. With the other guys on ignition issues. Check ignition fuse too. I'd be following the ignition diagnosis though, as suggested look at some cheap as replacements, points, condenser etc, maybe check for any hairline fractures in the dizzy cap in case of moisture. Carbys have to be pretty fkn dirty for it to be a problem there..

Yea. Basically how it went is we went in to investigate the misfire and it was electrical. It was the dizzy. But while there, tested the compression and it was so low so went further. Just turned into engine rebuild. Now the dizzy wasn't replaced but fixed. The main stem had a bit of play and it shouldn't move at all. We welded it closed and drilled it back through as an experimental effort. Worked for 3 days before coming somewhat loose again, and all this mucking around has burnt out my new points. ... Way to fix it? Buy a new electric dizzy and coil to match. Going in tomorrow. Fingers fkn crossed.

Solved! Along with an engine rebuild (at my request) we established the INITIAL reason for misfire. The shaft assembly inside the distributor was loose, you could literally rattle it by hand. Welded it up, drilled it through and got a tight fit again. Also found a piece of plastic inside by the advance plates which could have been stopping them from opening. A good tune up and she runs bloody SWEET! Engine has been rebored, piston rings fit, shaved head, ported head and rebuild with new gasket, valves, bearings etc. Also fit a new clutch as the dude before me put it in backwards lol? It had worn down so much the rings were literally about to break off.

I've gone and bought a second hand starter from an old escort and I am really hoping it's going to work. It's being fitted today. If it doesn't, I'm gonna fork out for a high torque. Really hoping it does though.
  5. Oh man! Can you hit me up via PM next time there is one? I'd be keen to attend.

Yea it turns over by hand and also yea, tried a bigger battery as well. Hahaha. But we are making progress which I'm stoked with.

3 shattered piston rings. All the wrong size too. Someone did the dodgey before I got the car it seems. All is well, had some machined and fit. Also had a complete rebuild, bearings and shaved head and all. However! Yes, however! The car won't turn over. Hahaha. The starter is too weak the roll the engine over. It was sweet with the compression about 50% but now it's right up there it's acting weak. Tried new brushes and bearing, still nothing. Best I go for another one, yea? I've purchased a second hand one for $70. Really hoping it works and is strong enough. If not, I guess it's new for another $220ish. Ugh!

Got some feedback from my dad's mechanic. Broken piston rings. Had absolutely no idea. Car has been running fine for ages! Oh well. Getting fixed, back on the road tomorrow. Crikey!

Just got a compression test done, running about 50%. Not good at all. Bloody hell! The daily has turned into a big old paperweight!

Thanks. I'll get those replaced tonight if I can. What's involved with a vaccum leak, I've never worked on anything like that before. A bit of a novice but I'm learning.

    Escort Misfiring

Hey guys, Escort started misfiring and pulling the other night but stopped for a few days until yesterday when in first gear she's just spitting and sputtering and misfiring and has become a bit old heavy paperweight in my driveway. Checked carby, looks clean and seems to be jetting fine. Checked fuel-filter, clean as. Looked over dizzy leads, look fine on ends but need to actually test them. Plugs are brand new. Opened up dizzy and noticed the breaker points seem to be a bit worn out, actually quite worn out so I'll pop those in tonight fingers crossed. Has anyone had a similar issue where their engine was almost like it wasn't firing on 1 cylinder? Such a rough idle, sometimes won't even stay on and spitting and sputtering and won't rev at all without hiccuping and dying? Just a quick heads up, thanks guys!
