Hmmm reading more on this... VDO gauges can over read. Apparently installing a specific diode can correct if it's wobbly or overreading.
Still seems to be screaming it's head off, does have a short exhaust on it though... maybe i'm being soft
-
That's what I reckon.
So therefore the tacho must be reading high- or something is seriously different in the diff
-
Was rebuilt by the gearbox company in Christchurch about a year ago- the guy was keen on Fords apparently- gave me a sheet with the MK1 Cortina GT ratios and said that's what it was...
-
I'm comfortable with it at 6500, it's built to handle that- if not a little more. 6500 is probably a safe place to stop pushing though.
Have been followed by a mate who matched my speed on his speedo- reading pretty much the same (2-3k difference as expected).
-
Clutch clamps up good, no slip.
Does have a shift remote which is a pain to get in and out of the selectors correctly. But I can select 4 discernibly different gears, and obviously reverse- so surely it isn't that?
-
Tacho is set correctly- 4 cylinder.
-
Will check that out in regards to the tacho now. Not running wasted spark.
-
I swear the tacho is right. It's a new VDO and it's all wired in properly.
This makes no sense.
Great fun through the gears until 80 but it shouldn't run out of legs that quickly...
-
It's a 4.125.
Maybe it's correct then. If so... bugger.
-
Yeah 105e is either 4.125 or 4.44...
I'll go and spin the wheels and see what I get
-
Cheers for that info.
It's the diff then I suspect, the speedo is 4k out, and the rev counter seems right for the noises it's making.
-
Right. Got my car going and legal and I'm loving it.
Only issue is the gearing seems very weird.
Engine is a 1600 crossflow, gearbox is from a Mk1 Cortina GT- Ratios as follows:
1st- 3.54
2nd- 2.39
3rd-1.41
4th- 1
Diff is 105E Anglia
Running 185 60/R13's.
In 4th it will do about 80k's but it's sitting at 6500rpm...which is disappointing and rather uncomfortable.
My mate has a modelling program which simulates speed per gear based on ratios... the model says it should do 100k's easily at just over 4grand.
Any ideas?
Cheers

Took me far less time to restore a watch than a bloody lotus that's for sure
-
Funny story with that, I found that watch on a beach about 18 years ago. (HA i'm 23 now). Anyway we handed it in and nobody claimed it so I got to keep it. Only rediscovered it in my drawers a year ago, slapped a new battery in it and off she went. It's an iron man watch so the hole is for a small compass. which was rooted, so there is a big hole in my watch. And that's my story

Cheers, very pleased.
Carb is good now- changed the regulator and a few minor tweaks sorted it. Also relocated and replaced the fuel filter as the pump was struggling a little bit.

So today, 5 years later, this happened

Hi all,
Currently putting my car through a wof, it has 3 point sparco harnesses in it (not inertia reel).
They are E rated for road use- so not FIA compliant.
Wondering if these have an expiry date- or a period of time whereby they are no longer legal on the street.
Any info appreciated.
Cheers,
Harry

So have driven this successfully several times now. Proof that it actually happened
Appropriate chase car also...
There are a few final niggling things that it will need for a WOF- but it's got to the point where a mechanic spending half a day on it is worth the cost, as such it's going in Monday morning for the last few bits- then hopefully he will put a sticker on it and it will be officially road legal.
Also need a grill for it... needs a laser cut 7 in it I feel for authenticity purposes.
I like rego on hold a lot at this point in time.
Off for one more spin shortly to make sure all the things that were working are still working.
Then tomorrow- D Day.

Hi all,
Wondering what fellow 1600 ford crossflow motor owners are seeing temperature wise at operating temp.
Drove mine at the weekend and it was sitting around the 90 degree mark- didn't exceed this. I've heard they tend to run a bit hotter than normal...
Any help appreciated,
Cheers

Spurred on by the medium success of yesterday, I came home after work and did more things.
Needed to get one of these off so the mechanical brake switch can be added in- because my car is too small and I'm an idiot and installed the pedals without adding the switch when the side panel was off. This is also known as laziness.
So decided on the right hand one as it's the easiest to access.
Needed to take the reservoir off because I couldn't get my spanner in to undo the bolts.
Which is when I decided to make a mess
But it was easy to take off then. I then cleaned up my mess because brake fluid is not very nice.
Result. One line ready to get chopped.
You may also notice my socks on the engine.
Not much of a fan of these.
Tried to get some proper weber mesh filters but they won't fit as the tubes are full radius.
Anyone get around this other ways? Or just make my own?
Off to visit Safe R tomorrow for the switch install.
Discuss if desired.

Seeing as the weather is rubbish, and I have the convenience of a dry garage to work in, I did some more on this today...
Due to fitment issues the Pricol Mechanical Gauge I had for the car wasn't going to work- couldn't get a cable in there that would maintain a progressive bend so the cable could spin properly... as such I've got a new VDO Electronic Gauge and Hall Effect Sensor. This needs a rotating surface for the sensor to point at- I've just the bolts on the drive shaft... So hopefully the signal is strong enough.
Made a little bracket like
And then added the sensor...
Bolted my bracket up and aligned the sensor with the bolts... Apologies for shite photo- shiny surfaces and flash don't mix
Wired it all up and cable tied the sensor wire down so it doesn't get munched on
Which then resulted in this happening
Which pleased me. However the next step is to calibrate, which requires driving it 1 measured km, so that'll have to wait for another day when liquids aren't falling from the sky.
Should also say I'm probably going to sell the Pricol gauge- never been used still in the original box. If anyone is keen let me know, will also list on the for sale section.
Should my wiring actually work for the sensor (Sceptical at best) the last thing this needs for WOF is a brake light switch- which needs to be a mechanical pressure style one in the lines- so I will have to pull a hard line out and go visit someone with a flaring tool and buy a switch...
Getting closer...

Evening.
So last weekend I was meant to attend Hanmer. Several reasons prevented me from doing so. Which was not mad.
However... on Sunday I decided to go for a small hoon in this. And I can confirm it is awesome.
Also mounted my extinguisher here because there is minimal space inside. Mostly reserved for human body parts.
The line up
Truck is hiding behind the tree so didn't make the photo. Sorry truck.
Funny for a tiny little car it looks bigger than the MG in this photo.
Also have some gopro footage of the drive. Which I'm not sad to say is too big to put on here- mostly because I was making stupid excitement noises most of the time.
Discussion if desired

Indeed reg on hold so that is the plan- Shouldn't be too many issues...... fingers crossed.
Ford Gearbox+diff issues- expected road speed per gear

Thought the shift remote could be in wrong, but it feels like 4 distinct gears. It won't take off in top gear... and it weighs nothing so if it was selecting second it should pull away easy.
