Oh man, to think I threw some of that gear out just a couple of years ago in a moment of insanity while moving house

You can also buy relays with self timers, ie: turn the key and it heats the glow plugs for x seconds and turns off.

If you felt like getting a little more complicated you can also run the glow plug indicator lamp off the back of the relay so you know when they've finished heating.
