  1. nice build. I'm building a 1500 at the minute for my mk2. do you know the valve sizes? are they stock or bigger?  i'm not sure what to go with for mine i cant find standard ones anyway and have been looking at throbnozzle stuff online, and 105 speed but cant find much info on the uprated sizes. The machine shop said they can make them up easy enough but i cant find much info on them so i dont know what to ask for.  all the tuning discussions and "guides" online are for the 1600 x flow. seems these aren't really messed with anymore.

  2. Still Smoking about in the old triumph. well the missus is. I've just placed a very large order with burton power. The Cortina should be seeing a tickled 1500 pre crossflow in a  month or three. long way from home yet but rough spec is going to be 0.60 thou over pistons 10.5-1 comp, A2 cosworth cam, twin 40 dcoes 4-1 mainfold and everything that moves renewed. only thing i'm not too sure of yet is the final spec of the head. As you can't get the valves anymore the machiners reckons he can make some easy enough just let him know sizes, so i'll work out what i want and that'll be the last bit. gonna have unleaded valve seats fitted though.

the list!  and thats not everything! :(  fuuuuck. ahaa. classic cars.

  3. cool i think that'll be the go for the start anyway, its a weekend toy i just want to err on the side of caution. cos i'm skint lol.  and yeah 3 times output is an estimate as the engines still in bits, but the stock motor only put out 50hp and i'm hoping for about 120-130. it was also the increased torque and revs i was worried about.

i'll get it stripped down and put up some pics anyway, should be next week sometime. cheers for the input.

  4. I'm not so sure that bearings would be what causes a failure due to tq. ( Please correct me if I'm wrong)

More likely in my opinion that you'd be breaking everything else.

i messed around with cvh turbos for years in the uk and went through about 9 or 10 BC boxes in that time, they'd shit themselves in 2nd and 3rd usually when thhey came on boost. first gear only got mullered if you were doing too many burnouts on the limiter. They'd start making a hell of a grumble first though, and it was always the layshaft bearings that took the hit first.  i switched to an IB5 box then which i fitted my lsd into and ran that one for 4 years no problems. its a common mod now for them, they're a 25 year younger design inside the same housing, with the main differnce being the bearings ( and different gear ratios but... i digress) so i thought that was a good place to start.   i'm a real novice with gearboxes though hence this post, i'd sooner wave a magic wand at one than crack it open tbh.

  5. I was actually thinking of having to machinne the box to fit bigger stuff. you reckon a like for like size will be a good enough upgrade?  i know gearbox upgrades usually mean a second mortgage too so yeah i was kinda hoping to avoid that area as much as possible ha.

The toyota hiace thing was something i was looking at too tbh, and some 80's navaras were column change too. this is probably my best option if i grenade the ford  one but in my mind its alot more fucking around with linkage, bellhousing and driveshaft etc.

  6. I am currently building a 1500 pre crossflow for my cortina and i'm looking at options for the gearbox. Its a 4 speed column change manual ( so quite rare and hard to replace i'd imagine) and the engine is going to be putting out about 3 times the original power, i dont want to be sweeping parts up off the road after the first donut.

i know i could rip it out and fit a T5 floor change but i assure you thats not going to happen!

i was wondering if anyone has any experience with fitting bigger / stronger bearings, to handle more torque and rpm.

    Am i mad?

  7. i was going to suggest torn diaphram in the fuel pump. the level shoudn't fluctuate. it should be 95% full all the time. since you've had it apart you should check all bolts for tightness too. it could be sucking air. although thats usually a constant issue, not intermittent. have you got oil in the carbs too?

lovely car by the way. i love mine. really, really love it. they're so underrated and have so many features for a classic. i've never seen one that colour look as it should. the CHCH ones that colour are faded to fuck and resemble bile green. i get shit for painting mine blue and orange but i have no regrets. yours has history to your family thats cool, mine was a 1500buck fixer upper!

  8. Chur for replies! Sorry about my tardy replies. went away over xmas and straight back into work blah blahhh.

I've looked at the cosworth cams and seems the A2 will probably suit what i need, A3 is probably gonna be too agressive for what i want. Sound advice from all cheers. rev limit will be around 6500 from what i've read with a balanced crank to flywheel with standard rods this is what seems about safe. forged rods will see 7 - 7500 easy though but i dont need those kind of revs on the road. not specced a head yet, got an engine guy recommended to me but he was closed until yesterday so i'm gonna get to him this week.

i've looked at burton and you can get vernier pulleys for crossflows! who knew? ive had them before but not on a crossflow. its gonna be a fuck to get to behind the timing case though lol. but yup cheers i'll get one of those on the lilst too. worth their weight in gold. gonna get it running myself but a rolling road tune is on the cards. spoke to harman brothers in chch and one of their blokes is keen to get to work on carbs setting them up correctly etc. i've learnt a lot about side draughts but fine tuning eludes me tbh and that flat spot always pisses me off, so yeah hopefully someone with a bit of proper knowledge can tune that out a bit.  na had a big cam in my escort and it was shit to drive. i dont want that as i said its never gonna see a racetrack. not sure on the diff, not had it out yet, presume its a 3.7?  cant find anything conclusive in the manual but i think the lotus' has 3.5 it will be soming out at a later date though to fit a slipper so i'll assess that and change it if needby then. exhaust is a 4-1 extractor, 2" bore straight through to a single silencer on the rear but im going to replace this as its too quiet. need a nice bark!  spark is gonna be all taken care of too, electronic ign going in.  its a mk2 cortina but an early one with the mk1 running gear. shit brakes, shit engine shit diff lol.  steel flywheel i reckon is the way to go i just need to sell a kidney to afford the freight lol.  not too worried about actual power but its got to be torquey and sound like a banshee

  9. again the age old question, sorry for boring you all but i have no clue which cam to go for.

im building up a 1500 kent (pre crossflow) for my cortina and screaming acceleration is what i want. not fussed about top speed i can go fast in other stuff. i just need that quick barp barp of the 40's and not too much lag from the cam.  i had a big cam in my escort, i dunno what it was but it was useless below 3000rpm and then it literally went like fuck to the redline. that was useless for town driving but the idle sounded cool. i have been looking at the burton stuff, and they have a high torque and mild road.

anyways i've been reading and reading about degrees, lift and duration and i understand it in theory, but i have no real world experience to back it up with, anyone care to shed some light after you stop having a laugh at me

not 100% on the engines final spec yet but its probably going to be.

    bore to 1550cc

    10:5:1 comperssion

    twin 40 dcoe carbs

    4-1 extractors

ported and polished head - not sure on valves yet to go oversize or not.

    std crank and rods,

possibly steel flywheel depending on funds left after machine work.

any help and advice massively appreciated.

  10. She's been wof'd for about a month now, sorry about the lack of updates but i'm crap with that, the missus takes all the pictures anyway.  finished it the wed night, wof thurs, straight through, up to kaikoura for the hop on friday. close! since then i've serviced it thoroughly and have been fitting finishing touches took it to marlbrough last weekend for labour weekend and she flew. 100k all the way, only minor issue was she split a rad hose and was weeping coolant because i disturbed it to flush the rad i reckon.but it was close to the end and i just cut it and reattached to get me home with a slight kink. happy days. . Its still not done but its close. can't get the chrome trim on the new windscreen seal so i think i'll have to glue it on. the painter has gone radio silent on the visor and i got a heart stopping quote for some new minilite wheels, so i'm gonna look elsewhere for now.  few pics. feedback appreciated on the finish, colour scheme etc, good or bad. its been dividing opinions for 3 weeks now. love it or hate it lol.
