  1. If there's no history of the car in NZ, or there are any importation issues, like no paperwork, or oversize (3.5 ton has to be RHD)

It cannot be registered here EVER!, so it pays to check.

Some people have found ways around this, but I'd want a letter from VTNZ stating it can be registered before I bought it.

I owned a couple of cars including a nice 69 Mustang fastback that VTNZ told me could never be registered, because of its lack of paperwork.

Be very careful buying cars without any rego history.

  2. A word of warning here

Be very careful buying a car to reregister with no plates or history, your car had a Cert plate Matt, so they usually have the reg number stamped in the plate, and even if it doesn't the number on the plate will tie into a registration number.

There are plenty of unregisterable cars out there, I get a few come to me now and again, the lucky ones have checked out the status BEFORE restoring them and have found the car they were working on cannot be re registered, the unlucky ones find out after. Occasionally I get a mint restored car that just cant be registered and into the yard it goes.

Best practice is to get a letter from VTNZ saying that there will be no problems with the registration after passing the compliance check, before you start work on it.

Scooters (mopeds) are a lot easier, no check needed providing they have come into the country before 01/07/2011 they just need to be sighted to ensure they are a 50 cc moped made before, and entered into the country before 01/07/2011, lots of confusion about this at a local level, if you start getting any static from them, get them to call the head office. Worked for me :)

  4. Most car towing companies hate picking cars and spares up due to the grief and man power required, most towies wont spend an hour loading up stuff. So you have two options.

1 Transport the car up separate with someone like Bryan Roberts, think $300ish if it runs, and then hire a van blat down and do an overnight in a rental.

    2. blat down in a rental truck towing a trailer and do the lot at once yourself saving $300.

I've tried quite a few ways of doing this, and the driving down yourself is probably the best option, but check out how much the rental firm charges for Kms as it can get quite expensive!!!!

  6. Jesus! RD400 Coffin Tank.

I had a miss spent couple of months with one of these in my youth, freeking awesome bike, but truly death on a stick. handling and braking I seem to remember were optional, but performance was exceptional. mine used to foul the plugs in town and you'd have to rev them clean, resulting in funny looks followed by monster wheelies :)
