  1. I have a Samurai, use it in 4wd club, and daily it to work

Yes they are great offroad, but they have no interior space

    low power

I do wheel bearings every 6 months

back brake shoes every 6 months

    leaf springs every 2ish years

takes a few mods to fit 30" or bigger

from experience I would recommend a Pajero, Especially a softtop as they are already geared for big tyres, front cvs are virtually unbreakable, possible factory rear locker and pto winch (there is a model (2.8 diesel hardtop I think) that has weak rear axle housing)

Terranos are good, especially for starting out, FAAAAR better than a poxy surf

70 series are good, possible factory lockers and pto winch, but prone to rust

MU's have very short front axles and hopeless front travel, leaf sprung rear

Cherokee is monocoque so no body lift, hard to fit recovery hooks because of no chassis, and heavy on petrol

Surfs are like skylines, every A holes got one, so far too expensive for what it is, prone to rust, very low centre crossmember that hangs up on everything, weak front diff

Bighorns are ok, but wide and heavy

    my 286 cents....

  2. You're both bang on.

There's a bi metal that opens a valve when hot and lets the viscous fluid thru and almost locks it up yada yada

There's a guy in chch that reconditions them. He's very good

I'm sure there's others around the country

Or backyard repair. Open it up put in a piece of rag in and reassemble.

I did this once on the side of the road

  3. Na its been made to look like a RS2000, the 3 centre gauges have been retro fitted by cutting holes in the face. The Tacho gauge style doesn't match the speedo, you can see the centre needles are red not orange, and the centre gauge is vacuum (rs2000 is oil pressure)someones done a very tidy job though don't get me wrong

Oh and the carb is all cleaned, and reassembled. got the bimetal working perfect on the choke butterflies, tested it with a heat gun. and I picked up a new diaphragm off trademe.

Still not sure about the return fuel line though, I think im going to continue to run without.

And plans are to soda blast the carb and manifold before refitting

  4. 4mm centre

    3mm sides

Over-eager pull on front hook bent the steel, so that's the main reason for the top bars (9mm exterior gusset)

Took measurements around winch (top photo) then drew up plans, the tricky part was drawing the side parts unfolded.

Got steel sheet from mate at Autobend, then got another mate at Hamilton jet to cut and bend, then I did the jigging and welding

it was in random fab thread I think

Edit: the gussets only go about 60mm up the risers, the rest is 3mm

    Edit edit:bar weighs 35kg, winch 31kg.

mounted bottom to chassis rails, top mounted with 10mmx40mm bar to brackets sticking above rails half way up engine bay
