New clutch is in and is now much better to drive. Also bought a new clutch cable because the old one wasn't the best and had stripped the adjustable circlip part of it.
Installed some new carpet from autodec, could do with some more work to get it fitting nicer.
Made up an adapter plate and modded the intake manifold to suit the weber carby. Had an attempt to make the inside all smooth which worked well, just need to get further in.

Not very much has happened since the last update.
The rear springs got a bit of a "trim" so it sits a bit nicer now. Still want it lower so I'll try sort some shorter shocks at some point.
The clutch has decided to give out all of a sudden, so I went and bought a new one (thanks Mark!). Will try and get it in this weekend.
The 4K that is at the engine builders is now getting bored out as big as it can go, since he found new pistons for very cheap.
Hopefully they start on it soon!
I have made a start on making my own extractors, I drew up a flange and got it laser cut at work. Now to figure out how to do the rest of them.

The chassis is now fully welded. It is so much stronger now, hardly twists at all. This is the design I've come up with so far. I was thinking of using 1.25 inch round tubing and getting it all cut out on the tube laser we have at work.
It will be double layer like the last image, so there's room for the exhaust etc to go through. In-between will be hoops for the drive shaft as well.
Does it sound like a good idea?

Got most of the top welded up and a little bit of the bottom done. It didn't really take as long as I thought it would. Can probably flip it over now to weld the rest of it.
Need to also start designing the crossmembers sometime soon.

Saw so many old cars in Palmy today. Didn't manage to get photos of a blue KE35 SR coupe, X70 Cressida driven by an elderly couple and some Fairlanes.

Cut up some plates to fit up to the front crossmember, drilled some holes for the bolts that the front end mounts with.Close-tacked all along the top and down the joins, just need to tack along the bottom. Then I can start the long process of tig welding it all together.

Not very much has happened recently, but now hopefully back into it.Most of that time was spent trying to figure out how to clamp the chassis down so it is all straight before welding on the boxing plates.
Decided to make some trestle like things that are bolted to the floor, then put some spacers in between them and the chassis to get it all level. Chassis is then welded to the trestles to hold it in place.
Managed to get most of it within 0.1 of a degree. So I'm hoping it comes out quite good. (Probably better than it was from factory anyway)
Will bring the boxing right up to the front crossmember, just need to do some cutting to get the plates fitting.
Thinking we might need to close-tack it all together, then fully weld the top and at least tack the new crossmembers in, so it can then be flipped to weld underneath of the boxing. That should then hold it all together without twisting too much, I hope.

Painted the wheels this weekend. Used paint stripper to remove the original paint, didn't work for the clearcoat on the lips though.
The rear lips came up pretty good with a sand and polish. Would come up better if I could remove the bolts but they're stuck.
Bought a Weber 28/36 too.

Did some photoshopping of the wheel colours, drip rails and window frames to see which ones I liked the best.
Still no idea which I prefer. Open to suggestions.
Also how would I go about lowering it another 30-40mm? It already has cobra springs which I think are just lows.
Cut or compress them a bit with shorter shocks? Or get some superlows? Adjustable coilovers are out of my budget atm.

Woo! Wheels finally arrived from Japan. They turned out to be 13x6.5 instead of 13x6 which is good.
Gave them a bit of a polish and some new nuts and bolts. They didn't polish up as good as the other pair because they have a clearcoat on them. Will have another go removing it at some point.
Was going to paint them all gold, but I think I like the red a bit more, because it's darker and has more contrast with the polished bits.
Just need to lower it a bit now.

Great looking Starlet, good to see you can still get TGP water pumps, approx how much $ was the pump? BTW I put a 28/36 weber on my mildly worked 5k and there was a significant improvement over the stock carb.
Cheers, the water pump was a little under $100.
Such a sharp looking car, could I suggest painting the trim on the drip rails black?
Was thinking about doing that, since the plastic coating has faded and is cracking off at the end.
How did you do yours? Just peel off the plastic and then paint it?

Parts arrived from Toyota awhile ago. Engine is at Hartley's getting some work done to it.
Second pair of starsharks hasn't arrived yet, hopefully this coming week.
Gave it a polish today, came out pretty good.
Also repainted the bumper end caps and fender mirrors satin black since they look average in gloss.
Doing that I discovered one of the front end caps is actually a rear one, so is slightly different.
So if anyone has a good r/h front bumper end cap they don't want, i'll take it.

Pulled off all the extra mounts and brackets that I no longer needed and welded up the bottom of the c-notch.Took it to A1 sandblasting who sandblasted and primered it. Looks so much better!
I think the next step is to box it, make some new crossmembers and sort out the rear arms.- 22

What pads did you get with them? I found the polymatrix B compound the best. The street compound is rubbish even for driving on the street funnily enough.
Should go much better now!
I only got the street pads. Didn't have enough money for the polymatrix ones haha. Will get some soon though!

Whats on the 26th? Road and Track is on the 20th then Trackday Xperience on the 27th iirc
It is the Constructors/MG car club trackday. A few co-workers are going, that's why I wanted to go, but found out more about it today. It sounds like there isn't going to be much track time so might give it a pass since I need to save some money as well.
Any chance you could give me the p/n of those calipers looking at 4 pot options on my ae 92 and am curious of the size of the 4pots hes using
I'm pretty sure these are the ones:

Didn't trust the standard brakes anymore so,bought the 4 pot Wilwood brake kit with 280mm Brembo discs from MRP.Installed them this afternoon, just need to sort out the braided lines and they are done.Wheel alignment next, then it can go back on the track on the 26th if funds allow.

Pulled the cab off the chassis today. Flipped the chassis upside down so I can finish welding the c-notch.Once that's done it can probably go to get sandblasted.

Installed some adjustable arms in the rear and camber plates in the front.Had to make some custom top plates for the front, since the stud spacing wasn't correct. Which was weird since they were meant to fit AE101's.The stance is much better now, looks awesome from behind.Spent the most in one go on this car a few days ago. Hopefully the stuff arrives next week.

Not much of an update, but gave these a bead blast and they came up pretty good.
Will just leave them with this finish, as I really can't be bothered trying to polish them. Will be too hard to get an even polish all over.

Started to pull apart the 4K the past week. Looks to be in pretty good condition.Ordered some parts and a gasket set from Mark at Toyota, should be here soon from Japan. Need to get some bearings and piston rings at some point too.
Gave the block and pulleys a coat of black engine enamel to tidy them up a bit.
Started to polish the cylinder head cover and timing chain cover. They look a bit nicer, but will give them a bead blast at work and then another polish to get them looking better.
Might take the head and camshaft to an engine builder this week and see if they can do some porting and give the cam a grind.

Would a 30/32 DMTE Weber downdraft carburettor suit a mildly worked 4K? Couldn't seem to find much on google about them

I think the cause of my one falling out was the pads being quite worn which I didn't realise. Rotor thickness seems fine. Would have changed them before going up to Taupo. The other side had about 2mm left in it.

Cool ride mate. Who's doing the cert, Marty, Danny or someone else?

It's only been 3 months of no progress, whoops. Oh well, back into it now.
Decided against trying to make it out of round tubing so just used some 30x30x2mm RHS as it's much easier.
More updates over the next couple of days hopefully.
