Look for a peugeot 405 turbo deez, cheap as to run and comfortable to drive and not a little noisy puddle jumper

When I bought my 110 it had an isuzu c230 engine fitted, cleared everything, could be an option if you are wanting another diesel. Also have seen 200tdi engines fitted, they pretty much bolt up, people run them without the turbo as well

2.0 16vs go pretty hard in a mk1. I had one in a mk1 that I had about 8 years ago

If you are talking direct bolt in with factory mounts you are limited to the 8v and 16v. You can bolt in a 1.8t from a early a4 or passat.
The later 1.8t from the mk4 ect will require custom mounts. These can be bought online.
Also the gearbox used in the mk1 is an 020. It has a cable clutch and rod shifter. They are fine for 8v and 16v. With a 1.8t you will want the 02a or 02j from the mk4. These have a hydraulic clutch and cable shifter so need to take that into consideration.
If I was doing it again id be using a 1.8t and box from a mk4. The front of a mk1 cant handle the weight of the vr6 imo

Ive never understood the point of fitting a switch when its less work just to replace the thermo switch.
I all ways carried a piece of wire with a male spade terminal crimped on each end. It could be used for the fuel pump relay or thermo switch

There is no meat in the hub to redrill them to 4x100. Easiest way is the swap the rear rotors and use g60 corrado spec up front. Cant remember exactly what parts you need for the corrado

You can run the 280mm Corrado rotor if you want to go back to 4x100

From my experience with marine and stationary versions of engines they have heavier rods, pistons, crank, and are tuned to run efficiently in quite a small rpm window
