  1. I have compared it with current figures (about $10 cheaper) I'm not moaning about rego prices. I'll still pay whatever to be able to drive my car. I'm aware it's one of those things and I choose to own old cars and modify my vechiles and am prepared and aware of all cost relating to my choices.

My statement was mainly stating that while vintage cars aren't affected, the proposed changes mean our old cars will cost more to register for the lesser mileage a majority of them travel compared to late model dailys.

I'm also aware that because of my choice of vechile if I crash I'm gonna come out pretty badly (video of vh commodore head onto brick wall makes from of car end up in passenger compartment)

What I mean is your grandmother, wife, girlfriend, daughter or sister if they had the funds could go and purchase a 430kw hsv off the showroom flow that is deemed 'safe' but it would probably be too much car for them(it might not be also)(I'd love one that being said) and even though they have better suspension, brakes and everything compared with what a less than 200kw Top of the line VK when they were new all this means is that fuck ups happen at a lot faster speeds. Or speeds are reached faster.

I've been in cars with customers that have bought their husbands hsv in for a service and in process of accompanying them in their vechile to drop them home have scared me with their driving.

In summary driving aids are nothing for driver inexperience

    (I'm a 20year old male so what do I know right?) :)

I'm not having a moan about the acc levies or anything and I've probably gone way off topic.

The email that I posted was forwarded to me by the secretary of my hotrod club, who received the email from Alistar. Alistar as the editor of nz petrolhead (and a member of my hotrod club) was informed of this by a president of another club.

So it seems like there's a lot of people misinterpreting that proposal. And isn't it better to be safe than sorry and stand up even if your wrong than stay quiet and be walked over?

Unless you start an uproar I suppose.

  2. But what it does appear to mean is that for vechiles that are older (like my 1984 vk commodore) but not under vintage rego we will be paying pretty much twice the amount of ACC levies when compared to a brand new commodore. Even though mine mightn't be classified as 'safe' compared to a brand new car, for the amount of time my car spends in the garage Im gonna end up paying more for this.

I work on late model vechiles for a living and can say that these cars are a lot more powerful and stable at speed than my heap (can be doing well over speed limit and not even realise as they drive so well) where as in an older vechile your more aware of your speed. Plus mistakes are usually a lot more forgiving in older cars with out driver aids As usually your more aware of when it's gonna step out or whatever.

So let's say I'm crusing along at 80 in my old car which I've decided to take for a cruise on a Sunday and someone in a late model 5 star ancaap rated daily driver car whose doing 120 in a 100km zone crosses the centerline and hits me head on who's gonna be worse off? Not the guy in the new car who caused the accident.

Plus it entertains me up how a HZ is band 1 but a hq is 40 years old and cheap rego when there both as almost the same and are as safe as each other.

So maybe there is valid reasons for their concern for enthusiasts like us who drive old cars that will have to pay the larger amount of acc levies because our cars are deemed 'unsafe' but not quite old enough for cheap rego.

Were still fighting a losing battle against the man but yeah.

I've got cars in both camps (66oldsmobile that's cheap rego and my VK)

No doubt most of you would have a late model daily also so this proposal may benefit you

I may be wrong but that's my opinion.

  3. Hello, I hope it's okay to post this here mods.

I've just received an email from the secretary of Manukau Rod and Custom that she's forwarded from the editor of NZ Petrolhead magazine and thought this may be of interest to people on here.

As almost all of you are involved in hot rodding and classic cars, I’m hoping you can help get this message out amongst fellow petrol heads.

I was only made aware of this a short time ago, I’ve mentioned in it June’s issue but that only leaves two days for submissions.

Email it to your mates, club members, stick it on facebook, and please make a submission. Here’s what I’ve stuck on Facebook and have sent out to email contacts:

ACC levies on old cars – act now!

Owners of vehicles more than 40 years old are about to be hit with an increased cost of around 70% in the ACC component of their vehicle registration, while most other vehicles will benefit from a 40% reduction. I think this is vastly unfair. Submissions are open until June 17, so if you don’t want to be hit in the pocket I urge you to act now before it’s too late.

No doubt you will have seen the news items about how the ACC component in vehicle registration will reduced for 2015/16. The ACC is proposing that levies be determined by how safe a vehicle is. This is good news for owners of modern vehicles, but for hot rod and classic car enthusiasts it works the other way. This is because there is no crash/safety data available for older cars, which puts them in ‘Class 3’

In ACC’s document titled ‘Light Passenger Vehicles’ a small but significant sentence states ‘If the vehicle you are querying is 40 or more years old then it is classed as a vintage or veteran vehicle is placed into Class 3 vehicles.’ Looking at the proposed levy for class 3 vehicles this amount is going to be $118.83 plus gst.

Currently the ACC proportion of an annual vehicle license over 40 years is $69.53 plus gst. That is going to be a huge 71% increase in ACC levies for these vehicles, plus gst.

The government is taking submissions on its proposed new levies until June 17.

http://www.acc.co.nz/PRD_EXT_CSMP/groups/external_levies/documents/papers_plans/wpc134042.pdf Motor vehicle account is on page 92

In June’s NZ Petrolhead (out Monday June 15) I have urged readers to make a submission, and I encourage you to do the same. You can email:

    levyconsultation@acc.co.nz

    or on the web www.acc.co.nz/levyconsultation

In your submission, the key points would be:

Most of these vehicles are driven only occasionally and not as an everyday vehicle

    · Many have limited mileage insurance.

    · If you own several classic cars you obviously can’t drive them all at once.

    · The are far less classic and collectable cars over 40 years old on the road, so the likelihood of these being involved in an injury accident is significantly less than a sales rep’s daily driven Toyota

    · As these are rare and valuable cars they are driven with care.

It is grossly unfair that owners of classic and collectable cars should be paying such a huge proportion of their registration fee towards the ACC Levy. Ask ACC to reconsider the amount of ACC levy to be applied to vehicles over 40 years old.

Please take a couple of minutes to make a submission. And please share this amongst your Facebook friends, and your real friends by email.

    Thanks

    Regards

    Alistair Davidson

  4. Did my first track day a couple of weekends back, it was a great day out. Car behaved perfectly but I did manage to cook the brakes on my last outing and pedal went to floor when parking up after the last session. Little bit scary thinking about it afterwards. Would not have like to have run out of brakes on the track.
I had some good battles with my mate in his MX-5

Track day did point out a few things though, Factory seats have next to no lateral support, my suspension sucks and I need a rear sway bar. (Four cylinder commodore bodys dont have rear sway bar mounts)

  5. Hello.

I haven't been up to much lately on this thing. just enjoying driving it really. but in other news I got rid of my two leftover parts cars.
As you know I had a VL wagon. I also purchased a bare VK sedan shell off tardme which i was going to use to replace some rusty parts in my VK. mainly passengers floor-pan and Left rear wheelarch.

Pretty much once i had the motor/box/front suspension out of the wagon and it being immobile in the back yard, (along with the VK shell) my mother put up with it for a few months but then wanted her lawn back. SoI ended up stripping the wagon shell and cutting the nose off it aswell as using the floor and both quarters for repairs on my car.

That shell ended up being taken to the scrapyard  :(

They pretty much grabbed it by the roof with there big claw crane and tossed it at the pile from a distance. It then proceeded to roll down to the bottom and land where it was in that photo.

That pretty much has made me anti scrapping cars  :(  scrap yards have no respect for them in there final journeys.

With that I decided to try and on sell the VK sedan shell that mother wanted gone as it was in to gooder nick to be cut up so I thought id try give it one more chance.

Just as well I did, Sold it to a guy whose going to supposedly use it to reshell his VK race car that was involved in a big accident.

  6. ^If it wasn't for the hot rodders we'd probably be like aussie with next to no scope for legal modifications.

Plus have to be a member of a NZHRA hot rod club for two years before even being eligible for application of fenderless exemptions. And then once you've got it you have to attend certain number of sanctioned events and get logbooks filled out to keep it.

Plus most rods are usually scratch built so there's little bit more in getting them legal than you bolting your 'precision japanese adjustable suspension' one evening

  7. I use my dad safari, TD42 and auto. Is super stable when loaded up but probably should legally have an HT licence when towing home trailer +heavy car because probably near or over legal limit for towing weight on car licence.

But bring NA and auto is slow up hills when loaded, but chugs along sweet/ not a race car

  8. Had an interesting evening tonight. Got paid so took Commodore to the gas station. On the way home, happened to go over a pedestrian crossing speed bump at the exact same time a police car coming to opposite way did, exhaust must've decided to rattle itself loose again and went SCRAAAAPPPEE resulting in police car doing a U-turn and pulling me over 200m from home. after the police officer had a nosy under my car and decided that my car wasnt even low, and it was just the droopy exhaust. I was told to get that fixed. He also mention that my tyres looked a little stretched but left it at that. He bid me a good evening and sent me on my way.

On point.... decided that 15x10s were too impractical so I sent two wheels the the steel surgeon and got them widened to a more sensible size.

and gave them a quick rattlecan (extremely averagely must i say) and threw some old tyres off parts car onto them.

    13733019835_13753ab8b6_z.jpg

    much more practical

    See Im not even low.
