    Cleetus is amazing!!!

Rob's half assery is the reason why I keep watching - like watching a train wreck: You know it's going to end badly, but you can't not look!

Yup cleetus is certainly great entertainment. The attitude to basically everything is different in Florida for sure.

Watching rob build that car and then go on to race ken block in it on basically it’s first real outing had me on the edge of my seat. Surprised there is not a lot of love here for him it’s an amazing machine just listing it’s features is bananas.

Edit: just listen to the fuckin thing

  2. G'day,

In the workshop we'd always be pretty pessimistic with a problem like this sorry. If not blown head gasket, then cracked block or cracked/warped heads. Can you check for combustion gases in the coolant? You'll need to remove the old coolant and refill to ensure an accurate test (Teekay test) Does it overpressurize quickly before warming up from a cold start? Do you see bubbles in the radiator when running up from a cold start? You can temporarily extend the filler cap neck with a funnel etc to check for bubbles when running up.

You can pressurise the cooling system 13psi and leave overnight and see if it hydraulics/coolant in the combustion chamber. Disable the fuel pump/crimp the line, spin it over after leaving pressurised overnight with the plugs out and check for coolant mist shooting out the plug holes. Coolant in the oil? Compression test? Often after you do a hot shutdown, you might hear/feel gurgling in the top radiator hose which is not a great sign.

edit added stuff/disclaimer: take this with a grain of salt, it is impossible to diagnose a cracked block over the internet.

Apologies/delete if this has been covered already.

  3. Fun story about 2nd gen minis. The turbo models have a Peugeot engine that suffers stretched timing chains.

In nz only we have a recall to replace these in all Peugeots. (kiwis get far longer out of cars than europeans)

BMW, who own the mini brand, did not want the huge cost of replacing all these chains so just did a software reflash to widen the cam sensor parameters. Fuckheads.

I've replaced maybe 20 of these chains for Peugeot and BMW and can knock it out in 5 hours on a good day.

Turbo 2nd gen new minis drive really well though...

I've got a W8 Passat on my watchlist any reason a well maintained one would be a shit idea? Having power withdrawals and miss my heated leather seats for winter.

Not quite got s4 money yet.

i always thought the W8 passat would be a great sleeper. The W8 is a unique engine, sounds like a V8, 270ish hp, 4WD. I still wouldnt mind owning one but not too sure if i could live with being a modern VW/Audi wanker, and constantly needing to justify how cool my passat was.

I have worked on a few W8 passats and can inform you that VW has run out of shortblocks for these, if that gives you an indication of reliability.

  5. Probably just me being too cautious. I never liked the idea of sitting in front of a 25 year old explosive/gas generator. Takes some fun outta working on your old school car too, makes removing steering wheels annoying, and if you have an electronic system all your sensors and ecu and clock spring must work and cost money to replace.

When they go off, it's a big bang and you kinda don't want your head anywhere near it.

  6. You can reseal the sump with the motor still in the car. You'll need a hoist though, can drop the subframe to do it. Lots of people leave out the gasket and just use rtv. Were there heaps of cracks in the exhaust housings?

  7. Ok thanks for the feedback,

I have got the idea about the Air Matic shocks, I'm also having difficulty finding extended warranties to cover them,,

Will investigate further. About the land cruiser - unfortunately too tall for my apartments undercover parking, and are pretty cumbersome around the CBD of Sydney, which is really all the car will be driving around.

A new one is 268k, with several mortgages not that interested in coughing up that dough,

Woah, we have a new one here at work in Nelson for $160,000, your Aussie price seems a bit high. I work for Mercedes and have driven the old 6.3 litre big block and the new twin turbo 4.0. The 4 litre is more fun, and stupid fast. The interior is awful chintzy though, like a disco ball in there. If I had the opportunity to own one I would hop on it so fucking fast. They are mental cars.

We often do brakes etc on them with little change from 2 grand. But who cares it's worth it.

They are far more wild than the m3 and m5, and given the choice I would have the merc over the bmw.

We haven't had any serious reliability issues with them, but most repairs are extremely expensive.

I have worked a bit on the new c63 if you have any specific questions I might be able to help, it's a lucky position you are in by the way.

  8. Awesome looking vehicle. The chassis rail connectors, why the need? Are you significantly increasing the engine output? Is it required for cert/race legalities etc? Are you worried the chassis will twist, how is established that it is still safe in a crash? The job you have done looks very tidy by the way.

  9. woah woah, a half bridge works well with the standard 4 barrel nikki carb.

The outer plates are bridge ported, so you you can putt around on the the primary stock ports through town and such, and then open the secondaries which lead to larger bridgey ports. Makes a nice driveable engine, and you don't need to buy webbers. Often folks gut the base under the carb so the the ports have a common section so has a lumpy idle.
