Any exterior shots of the car? Sounds like a gem

I don't have full shots of the car, only areas I wanted specific details.

Still has hardboard tank protector, also JDM cars had a tank vent recirulation system, with vapour line running back to factory carb.  Mine has this but is redundant with IDA fitted.

There are some pics of the car on Ausrotary, but close to 10 years ago.  Can't find them now.

    Yooooo hoooo, @S124AB trainspotter here

Either your mate has a 10a twin diz or 12a single diz, no rx3s had 12a TD.

If 73 it prob has what we call 10a cone, but factory 12a

The JDM cars had quite different spec to exported units.

This car is definitely a 12A TD and model code is S124A.  A 10A would start S102A

Car is stock original, but had colour change from D6 - Concorde Silver to AM-Phoenix Blue (I think)

I visited him a couple of years ago to get loads of pics of the car as a reference in restoring mine, but it was stored in an underground car park, with poor lighting, so pics weren't brilliant as hoped.

Also, doesn’t look like the factory seat covers? Don’t GT’s normally have the lacing on the seats (or B&D interior as we used to call it).

GT's had a couple of interior variants. Not sure how long this style was in place, but here's a pic, and I have a rear seat with this pattern in my collection.

Last series of RX-3 had the velour and vinyl.

A mate in Melbourne has a 73 or 74 twin dizzy 12A GT he imported from Japan with the white stripe.

That one on trade me looks like it's had a big resto, loads of bits missing or incorrect.

ill admit to asking a dumb question here. but if anyone has some recent experience that would be good

how much would I be looking at spending to get this thing painted? not after show car spec, just tidy it up in the same white (enamel?) and sort out some surface rust on the roof before it goes bad. usual stone chips and stuff

id paint it myself if it was a matt colour, which I might do yet, ive had a couple of ideas

    $3-$5 k

    In 2K white.

Any reasonable painter will want to prime the car, plus sort out the chips, rusting etc.

Therefore two full sandings and blocking, masking x 2 plus ? time to sort minor issues.

I've been fixing quite a few hail damaged Aus cars, and it's around $3500 for roof repair, Cant rails, bonnet (usually replace).

Do any of you piners have an rx7 S1 ,3 or 4 core copper and brass radiator?

    Manual trans type

I think they are similar to rx3 etc. Core size is about 29cm X 52cm

I don't really trust the alloy ones for a road car

I've got a radiator or two in a pile of shit in my lock up.

Not sure if RX7 or RX2.

Frame is a bit rusty (ex Japan) or sure if core needs replacing.

Will dig it out in a day or two when I get a chance.

Check out those new Mercedes utes they have some pretty sweet lease and finance options on the commercial vehicles.

As you probably know, they are just a rebadged D23 Navara with a huge mark up on the price for the three pointed badge.

That cat is now out of the bag which is why they are offering big discounts, they can't sell them.

  7. The car may never have been on the road in Japan, always a dedicated race car.

I  may be able to track down production dates, as I know I can go back as far as 1976, not sure if earlier exist.

If the car wasn't eligible for an Export Certificate from Japan, it would have been documented as parts for shipping, as they won't ship whole bodies without that.

Well that's what the rules are, unless it was shipped in a container.

  8. As with any car valuation, find out what a similar tidy one, all reg'd and legal, running, nothing to spend would be worth, then work backwards.

It's probably not reg on hold, so presume it's got to be re-complied.

Sitting for that long unused, there will be lots of things to fix, rubber shit, hoses, tyres, bushes, would be just the start.

Non runner is probably carby overhaul, but engines that haven't run for a long time, can build upon a fine layer of rust in the bores, which then leads to accelerated oil/comp ring wear, pitting etc

Checking cars in Aus, there is a similar car, running, owner asking $3k, other VW's of a similar vintage are $5-$6k, although a couple are asking $15k for old beetles.

There is a VW foamers club, so probably someone there will have an idea of others around, and value.

Concours is on at Ellerslie on 10th Feb.

Ideal show to visit to see all the Marque fanatics come out in their finery.

Normally a large VW contingent, so worth a visit if you're up this way, that's where you find all the gems of information, and leads for buys and sells ....

And use 13b plates? Because the water seal grooves are in the housings on 12a ay.. or do you somehow put grooves in the cut down 13b housings?

My engine builder told me about machining down 13B to 12A, as the only difference is width.

Must CNC new grooves in as well, somehow all set up on the computer to machine them in.

Not sure if he has the gear, or gives them to a precision engineer with the milling equipment.

One down side to 12a’s is the total lack of replacement housings. So when they go pop it’s a lot more work to replace them/get them rebuilt/have to upgrade to 13b?

Just machine 13B housings down to 12A width, problem solved.

Leave the 13B stamp on the housing, make the young whackers foam over them.....

  11. Actually early ones were using a Peugeot/Citreon engine that may have been made in Brazil by Tritec.

Personally I wouldn't touch them with a barge pole, but I say that about most Euro's.

Seen some horror Mini trade in's with thousands to spend just to get drivable and WOFable, so off to the scrappie they go....

  12. I thought it was your lucky day, but the charts don't go as far as Y & Z

    From wankopedia...

Prior to 1964, tires were all made to a 90% aspect ratio. Tire size was specified as the tire width in inches and the diameter in inches - for example 6.50-15.

From 1965 to the early 70's, tires were made to an 80% aspect ratio. Tire size was again specified by width in inches and diameter in inches. To differentiate from the earlier 90-ratio tires, the decimal point is usually omitted from the width - for example 685-15 for a tire 6.85 inches wide.

Starting in 1972 tires were specified by load rating, using a letter code. In practice a higher load rating tire was also a wider tire. In this system a tire had a letter, optionally followed by "R" for radial tires, followed by the aspect ratio, a dash and the diameter - C78-15 or CR78-15 for bias and radial respectively. Each diameter of wheel had a separate sequence of load ratings, thus a C78-14 and a C78-15 are not the same width. 78% aspect ratio was typical for letter sized tires, although 70% was also common and lower profiles down to 50% were occasionally seen.

    Third column under Alpha Numeric.

How do you know that the speedo's have been swapped?

On the topic, is it possible to check milage for an import that has been in the coutry for a while - that was not AA checked at the time??

The Japanese export certificate should have the last recorded milage on it, usually change of owner into export agents name.

Has the car been complied yet?

How long ago did it come here?

There should be an entry at time of border check in Japan of mileage that will be in NZTA system.

    Many thanks guys.

so the 1zz is.more better than the 1az?

I had thought the bigger engine option would be us.  Feilders are pretty small inside. I sort of saw the Caldina as the next size up.*

*without  really looking at anything in person yet.

@- i5oogt -s middy had a 2zz Feilder. But she reckoned it was too small inside.

I import all these shitters from japan.

Problem with the 2.0 1AZ engine from Toyota and the similar 2.4 version found in some Avensis is they are the Toyota version of the Mitsi GDi.

Direct injection petrol with very high compression.

Issues are they need to run high octane, but most users stick in 91.

They are designed to run ultra lean at low medium rpm, so you get a lot of carbon build up, oil blackens quickly, leading to gunked up lifters that clack away.

To fix this is all new lifters at  XXX $.

The same 2.0 engine was also used in the RAV4 model through to about 06.

Also found in Noah, Nadia, Gaia models and some others.

Best option for a cheap Toyota wagon with plenty of room and reliable, is the 2004 - 2008 model 1.8 Wish, ZNE10 model with 1ZZ engine.

You can get the XS version which has body kit and alloys.

There is a 2.0 Wish but that has the problem engine....

7 seats, but third row fold into the floor, so you just use it as a 5 seat most of the time.

Autoblast are really good to deal with. you're only 50% of the way there with your price estimate though.

I think the price depends on what car you have.  Turn up with an old Porsche, the $$ will be flashing in his eyes, compared to turning up with an old Mini.

  16. + 1

    Also:

Automotive Blasting, 12A Subway Rd, Pukekohe did my car some years back.

There is Autoblast in Glenfield as well.

Most important thing is large panel areas get sanded back, not blasted, unless using soda or other 'soft' media.

Garnet and similar aggregates can stretch panels, door skins, roofs, bonnets etc.

This warps the steel, makes it pop, or panels go wavy as the tension is removed.

Then need an expert who can heat shrink back into shape.

Garnet is fine except in the areas mentioned.

Pataua South. Guy I was visiting has pestered him to sell it to him. One of those gonna do it up one day deals. There's also a pickup a couple of years newer next to it under a cover. Fricking sad cos there's not gonna be much left of them soon

What you say to guys like this is:

"Well, I'll give you a month to make a start on doing it up'.  If you haven't made a start in a month, I'll be back with a trailer to pick it up.

I'm going to restore it up back to original,  I'm ready to get it underway now, and when it's finished, you can come and have a drive in it whenever you want."

Tell him it could cost $50 - $60 k to have it properly restored, and is that the sort of money he's willing to spend on it, cause if he does a rough job, NZTA won't allow it back on the road as he's not an approved repairer, the rules have changed now.....

(This will hopefully focus his mind that it may just be going to a good home.)

Just chip away, and do follow up with him, and turn up with a trailer.......

    /side sharn.

Was chatting to a dude recently who was talking about Ryan’s red 808 sedan. He told me it was the only remaining stock standard 808 in the country. I pointed out that there are probably several stock standard 808’s sedans kicking around and that I knew of at least 2 others.

He called bullshit and said “Everyone always claims there are others but where are they”

I then told him that there is at least 1 stock standard 808 coupe in the country too.

He called bullshit on that too and said they were all chopped up years ago. “No way there’s any coupes left. Not a snowballs chance in hell”

Okay mate. Have a swell day.

Did he have a cap on backwards and pants half way down his arse?
