Sooooo.....

Im new to this kinda thing, and have never done anything like this on a forum and ill must likely muck it all up... But here goes.

Ive owned this car for a while now... Coming up four years. And up until February of this year it was my Daily driver. 4k with obligatory ram flow for maximum sucking of hot air... And 5 speed for gentile cruising at 98 kmph.. or 75kmph when fully loaded on way to Dorkland when I moved there Last year for a brief (9month) working holiday... Now when I say this car was my daily I mean I took it everywhere including on a solo tiki tour of the upper north island over labour weekend last year.. Yes yes I took her to cape Reinga ... Ahhh the memories.... Btw the Mangamuka Gorge Such a sweet road in the starlet!!!!!! Here are a couple of photos from that trip to the cape...

But anyway enough of that crap I decided at the beginning of the year that she was coming off the road.. The supercharger whine coming from the gearbox was getting a touch on the annoying side.... And certain rust issues that I had been "fixing" Needed to be attended to Properly... So i purchased a new car (ae95 Wagon of Jap spec coolness) And the poor KP has sat on my parents drive waiting patiently for me to secure working space for her......... And that time has come... In the form of me buying my first house... (great time to start a project when I'm gonna be student type broke but hey can't afford to drink. So may as well spend my time with a flappy disk and a grinder!)

Plans for the KP

1st things 1st RUST... She sure has her fair share of it!

  • Some in the firewall/ strut tower area passenger side. I had cut this out but it seems to be back.. #isuck
  • Small amount of superficial stuff in the bottom of the B pillar drivers side which when I attack will no doubt became a massive Hole....
  • And then there is the C pillars/ bottom of boot area/ seam behind rear bumper... Ive done all kinds of great patches over the years for wofs... but this area needs some MAJOR work..... Dreading it  :doubt:

Apart from that she's Great body wise.....

Secondly Will be the running gear...

Ive hummed and hummed over this for the last year or so... shall I keep it K series worked 4k 7kturbo bla de bla.. Or shall I go 12a BP Matty b and 18inch vaults.........

But I've firmly decided I will be going down the the route of the 4agte... Ive recently Bought Seedys turbo gear.... so no backing out now!!

Still I'm in of need everything. Motor, Gbox, Diff, ECU etc etc etc etc etc. So I'm now starting the process of piecing together everything I need..

Ive found a 7 rib block, gze pistons, some form of crank and a big port head for a good price but I'm open to all offers at the moment... Soo if you fine lads know of any parts that would help me in the process that would be Greatly appreciated!!!

So yeah thats the start of whats going to be a Long process one imagines!!!!

Cheers,

Crang

Soooooooooo.......... long time no updates  :|. As i bought a house in december of last year that was in desperate need of exterior cladding work, I've pretty much spent all my spare time and money working on the house... which has been quite the major task. Ie house was clad in asbestos so once removed had to sort window sills, facings, in/ex corners bla bla etc etc. Quite the task, but the house is now at a point where I'm happy to face a winter without worrying about leaks etc.. and all future work can wait for the sun to start shining again and light after work.....

So now winter has arrived I thought no better time to start spending long cold nights in the garage working on the kp....

So like I said in my earlier post rust is my 1st port in this storm so I've decided to attack it in stages and start with the worst area which is by far the c pillars/boot area..

I started attacking everything with a nice flappy disc to expose all obviously affected areas which of course grew in size as i attacked them..... sigh....

Also as I was stripping I found some wonderful dents that had been completely filled with bog.. so I've pushed them out and ill fix them properly as i move forward.

As for rust its pretty bad but nowhere near as bad as i was expecting. Worst area by far is the seam behind the bumper but its only 1/3 of the seam its self but its in all 3 layers of steel so even though I've started chopping this area its definitely going to grow in size... Just so i can get to the surrounding steel to treat it but also to cut out most of whats cancerous !!eeeeek!!

On the subject of treating the not so badly affected areas what do you dudes suggest????... Obviously people talk of fisholine (probably spelt wrong) I'm sure the cat will appreciate me using that, but I've used another product a couple years ago the name has dissapered from memory but it turned bluey purple then black when on the affected areas.

The second area that is not ideal is the top of the gutter of the boot into the roof itself its seems that most of this area will need removing but its also in the second layer of steel pretty bad in one area then it seems to return to fairly clean steel so I'm pretty happy that I'm not going to be hacking this apart to much i was expecting the whole second layer to be completely gone so thats a bonus i suppose!!??!!

The third area is where the roof gutter seams back into the body itself and it continues around to the c pillar its a decent chunk that needs removing here but once again I was expecting the second layer to be gone the whole way along the roof gutter but it seems to be contained to one smallish area then returns to clean steel so once again bonus!!

There are small areas all around the c pillar that hopefully can just be ground back and treated but they may grind back to nothing and need cutting out so well see how that turns out... All in all I'm reasonably happy with what I've found as Id convinced myself that i was gonna be cutting out most of the boot area out to save her as the rest girl is basically rust free....

Sorry about the massive pics i don't know how to make them smaller anymore its all changed on me.......

Now on to the stuff thats far more motivating than rust!!! I've basically pieced together the driveline for her minus a couple of key pieces Ie diff, link etc but all in due course.

I bought a 4agze 7rib block off trade me and luckily enough for me the person I bought it off was Miles Udy!! So not only did i get to swoon over his 86 race car but i got myself into a wealth of RWD 4age parts at "Extremely!!!!!!" fair prices. I went to buy a block and left with boxes.. He's such a GC told him my plans and he said well wait just a minute I've probably got a lot off the stuff you need laying around in boxes. My boxes of goodies included RWD alt bracket RWD water stuff RWD intake manifold with all sensors wiring attached big port head and a whole bunch of misc stuff.....

obligatory pic of coolness

While I was there we started talking diffs and gear boxes. He offered me an 86 rear end minus axels etc but i turned him down as my plan is to run an F series out of an estima etc with an altezza lsd just for ease and price of replacement axels etc etc.

But the conversation of a gearbox was one i was more than interested in. We talked about the w55 in his race car and he started saying how he had a whole heap of boxes in bits laying about his workshop and if i was interested he'd build me one. With his own A to w bell housings that comes undrilled so i can use any slave etc. I also asked if he had any central shifters about as I'm fairly sure that is what i need for the kp. He said bound to in a box somewhere :-) .

So last week i got a message to say he'd built my box for me and all up its cost me 1150 for a w55 rebuilt what needed replacing bell housing central shifter and complete front yoke for the driveshaft... Im absolutely wrapped with this as the bell housings are nearly that much on the TARD...

The plan for the motor build is to retain the factory bottom end that Toyota in their brilliance forged in the factory and acquire some nice ACL bearings.. top end will be 16 valve big port with some Kelford cams for a bit of extra bump. I bought seedys turbo gear that he had in his 1200 a while back. I basically bought it for the sump, turbo mani and intercooler as the turbo that currently attached is a bit small for what I'm aiming for. I plan to run a t28 of some description preferably 2860r but ill get to that bridge when it needs crossing. Im also open to suggestions on turbo options.......

But as the motor is the final part of this story its all way off in the picture... before then i need to

1, Sort rust

2, Suspension/ breaks this is going to be fun as i want to keep running 13s but ill sort it

3, get rear end sorted

4, mount motor gearbox driveshaft etc...

Its going to be a busy busy winter!!!!!

Anyways thanks for reading and input is always appreciated!!!

Crangie out!!!!
