So after saying to my matesi didnt want to mod this car it was too perfect and awesome first on my mod list was a custom 2 inch exhaust system about 5 days after ownership, from there it went downhill haha then it was time for the doooooor of twin sidedraughts i had heard it and needed it myself so on they went and the real sss was born.

The first carbs put on were dhla 48 mm way too big for my lil 1600 which made it near impossible to drive there was no inbetween it was idle or 4000 rpm clutch dump takeoffs it was hard work and took its toll quickly on the engine bore washing it, after sourcing them i made the switch to 40mm dhlas but the damage was done and the smoking was getting bad but for a while i just drove it and enjoyed it till i wanted to start the rebuild.

So next up was the strip down of the engine, me and my dad did this and we went about so that if it went well the crank didnt have to come out, we were successful in this and got away with a home and new rings and big end bearings but that wasnt all that was going to be done now i had commited to modifying ;)

So with these datsun engines the power is truly all in the head, what i wanted was a fast street car that sounded aggressive but wasnt super hard to drive round town at low speeds, what i ended up with was this, a peanut head as we call them skimmed 40 thou, 2 mm oversized valves from a 2 litre engine, a stage 3 cam grind from franklin cams and double valve springs to suit, i didnt want to go into porting at this stage as i wanted room to grow later on.

Next big change was for the 2013 datsun car club nationals in christchurch, panel and paint was the name of the game, 3 months out the car was checked over and booked in, 2 months out the car was in for wrk and after 8 of the worst weeks ever without my car she was done paneled then painted in fords chilli orange, the bumpers were to be chromed but sum pissing around happened and everythng that was chrome was painted in the silver from the door handles of mitsubishi outlanders (good place to get a colour eh?) it cost me a mint but it was worth every penny.

Ok so with car painted and side trims and badges all removed i needed something to fill the void coz so many people dont know what it is so i opted to get custom stickers first obviously is the datsun logo to match my tattoo, then a one of a kind custom, i got the rs1800 escort side decal made into 160j sss i love it to bits!

So next was a few things i needed to do, the cut front spring made for some shitty handling sometimes so had to remedy that with custom made springs and shortened shocks, also jut coz the idea of points bugged me and the electronic ignition module i bought wudnt seem to work no matter what we did i opted for an msd cdi unit which is really cool and gives me a setable rev limiter which i like, then like a year laer i got the adapter to make my tacho go as i had been without one for so long.

Ok so the whole time i have had thenbuilt engine in i have been tuning using a innovate lm2 wideband o2 sensor and a book called how to build and power tune weber and dellorto carbs, i have a pretty good knowledge of what to do now and have rebuilt carbs and have about 3 spare sets laying around, i have tuned it as best as i can get with the tools and jets and venturis i have available to me, it runs very well and i am very pleased with how it runs, the power on cam is amazing and the torque is great for a little ennigne like this, anyone wana take a gues at dyno power? Kw? Hp? At wheels or engine just curious as to what people think and ill reveal in the next few days.

Ok so one guess was done haha but never the less it was 140 hp, altho im sad to say it wasnt that much it made a very reasonable 87 hp at the wheels not bad i dare say, id estimate that to be around 125 hp at the engine which is not bad for an 8v sohc non crossflow motor, what you guys think? Please let me know also in passing if anyone knows or has any ideas on what my wierd dyno graphs cud b caused by please let me know also, left hand sheet is good run right two are fucked up and unsure why, good fuel pressure, flow, spark everything cheers.

Discuss! Please!//oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/47808-monsta01s-1979-datsun-160j-sss-discussion/

Update! Went to a track day a few months back and absolutely hated driving this thing around because of the seats, i desperately needed some new ones, i did a little research on what would fit pretty easily without mods that would need certing, found measurements etc decided on fishnet recaros from an isuzu bighorn, picked them up from the wreckers for 250, pretty dirty but in pretty good condition really, cleaned them up at work with shampoo and a wet vac and with very minor ahd mainly unseeable mods they are in and soo comfy.

  • 1 year later...

No updates for a while here just been trying to get out and drive and enjoy the car, a few weeks ago me and my brother and father all went for a drive in our own cars, we were on back country roads and speeding along, about 120 kms and my carlet out the biggest backfire ever, then nothing no power just nothing, luckily my dad hadsome small and i mean tiny wires in his car that we mwnaged to get me home, my 300 odd dollar msd had shit its pants and i had no spark. As you can imagine i was pretty pissed off about the msd so i looked into buying another but couldnt justify costs, so i went looking for alternative options, i found at jaycar an electronic ignition module, essentially doing the same as the msd but minus the capacitors, it was in kit form but was only 67 dollars so i decided to jump at it and have a go to build it myself.

It took me a few hours and a few coffees to keep me interested but it was done, i installedit the next weekend and the car started and ran awesome, once played with all the settings on it and adjusting the dwell and my timing the car was running better than it ever did on the msdso heres a fewpics.

Because the msd had a built in adjustable rev limiter i decided it would be fun to try and make my own since the msd was gone now, i got a frequency relay module from jaycar yet again and it has the ability to shift a relay when its either going up to or coming down from a certain point which you can adjust using any sort of input ie a wheel speed sensor to have a speed related something happen or to trigger a shift light etc so i decided to use it and wire it so that when it got to the rev limit point i wanted it switched the relay and essentially earthed the wire from the points meaning the coil doesnt fire until the revs drop back down thus making a rev limiter,if anybody wants to know how i can help in my discussion thread
