Dell'orto's nearly-decade-long-project KE70

January 2013

Been super slack on updates with this - Christmas is never a good time to try and get this finished!

Also, I bought myself an early xmas present

Which both took up garage space and motivation

However it's currently off at PPRE so I've got a few weeks to get all the last finicky bits done.

Had no joy at all finding bumper end caps, so got a set from eBay. They're Thai replica crap of course, but needs must...with a bit of tweaking they actually fit alright. So slack I don't even have photos with the bumpers on the car! Also have a set of bumper indicator lenses coming from Japan, as one of them was broken, and had the wrong type of lens put on on it!

Remade the rear section of the exhaust, as I wasn't quite happy with how the muffler sat....now it sits nice and tight, but I can't decide which tip to use...FWP I know:lol:

Either the longer angled one

or

straight.jpg

Thoughts?

Also bled the rear brakes up last night - vacuum bleeder made it so much easier! Still took a bit to get fluid through, but given the system hasn't had fluid in it ever, I wasn't surprised. Quite nice to finally have all 3 pedals functioning as they should!

Scarier still - dyno and cert booked for 20th of Feb 8)

Went with the angle tip in the end, the straight one was just too short, and the other ones were too long and looked stupid :barfy:

So onto the final few jobs!

*Bled up the brakes. Had an issue with the m/c being incorrectly assembled, figured it out and job's a goodun. Filled with Castol Response Super Dot 4, shouldn't boil too easily!

*Filled the cooling system, found my pretty T bolt clamp on the water pump was too thick to fit properly between the alternator bracket and water pump outlet, so spilled a litre or so of coolant on the floor while I ran around looking for a normal clamp :Puzzled: Been 4 days so far with no leaks, so should be ok. Want to pressure test it before we go to Palmy though. It's not actually an antifreeze in there currently, just a non-glycol based inhibitor...was recommended not to use a glycol coolant with a new head gasket.

*Replaced rear swaybar mount bushes..the ones the bar came with didn't actually fit in the mount for some reason? 100 series Corolla ones however fit quite nicely with 2mm trimmed off the flanges. So much grease

Replaced the bumper and side indicator lenses, as the bumper ones were f@%ked, and the side ones were just old and faded.

New vs old

Got those new from Toyota some years back, front ones had to come from the Yahoo auctions - they're mint and cost me $13

Made up some rubber gaskets for the mirror bases today using an old inner tube...once they're mounted, all I need to do is fill it with fuel 8)

February 2013, pt2busy month this one!

Yep...

Filled it up with fuel tonight - 42 litres takes a damn long time to drain from fuel cans!

Bonus, fuel gauge still works, albeit pretty slowly...was a bit concerned it might be dead after all these years of being empty. Light went out straight away though so at least I'll have some warning

I was also impressed how quickly it got fuel to the carbs, given the Holley pumps are a push pump I was sort of expecting it to take a while to prime, but it was pretty near instant.

Once I tightened up all the loose connections  this happened

I'll have to get new washers for the carb fittings though, the ones I have are slightly too big, and they still weep a touch. Easy fix at least!

Gave it its first wash in over a year! Ready to roll onto the trailer tomorrow. Also polished up the wiper arms, stainless steel comes up nicely!

And dammit my exhaust is gonna scrape like a bitch on the road, it scraped coming out of the garage

February 2013fffffffuuuuuuuuuuuu

Well - has been a pretty eventful couple of days!

Car loaded up and ready to roll 8)

takeoff.jpg

Went in and got a wheel alignment - was impressed, with the camber plates as the only form of adjustment it had just shy of 2.5 degrees negative camber! Had it set to 1.5 degrees, and stock castor for the time being.

Made it intact to the workshop :D

And thats where things started to go down hill...

Even though I had booked in for a run up and tune, lots of other cars currently there were causing issues. Also my carbs needed a bit of tweaking (as I'd expected) and the dizzy was a tooth out too.

First fire up went well, once the carbs were balanced - it sounds pretty amazing! Exhaust is quite quiet, but you can't hear it over the induction anyway

Drove it around the block to go to the dyno entrance, and found it was dumping coolant all over the place :abusive: The lower radiator hose was too close to the alternator, and the fan chewed a hole through it. Shot down and grabbed a new hose and some more coolant, and threw it all back together. At this stage it was 5pm, so we ran out of time to do any tuning.

Ran it up a few times on the dyno to give it some load, made a pretty reasonably 57kw at 6000rpm...it starts to go quite lean above 5000rpm so we didn't want to push it too much. It also has a pretty big flat spot around 3000, then comes on in a big way at 3500, about what I expected with this cam. Rodney, the workshop owner said once we get it tuned it should crack 70kw quite comfortably, and if it keeps making power over 7k then it may even touch 80kw, which I'd be pretty stoked with!

From there, I went round to the cert mans workshop...sun was starting to set at this point

cert.jpg

He was pretty happy with the car, said if I want to lower the front more thats no issue 8) Just need a driveshaft hoop, speedo calibration, nyloc nuts/lock washers on the diff flange and tighten the adjustable spring perches.

With that out of the way, I began the mission home!

With the T50, 4.1 diff and the smaller tyres, it sits at 3700 at 100k in 5th, so stays on cam. Between 4000 and the 5000rpm limit, it's actually pretty quick! It turns in quite well too, potentially to do with the diff. The spring rates are pretty well spot on, its firm without being ridiculously stiff, all the shocks are set at max soft, I think a bit of tweaking here will make it better over really ripply road surfaces.

10pm I got to BP in Otaki to top up the fuel - took a photo cause it looks pretty sweet under fluoro lights

broken.jpg

However that's about when it all went bad...went to leave, and no go. On cranking sounded like it had no compression...luckily some GCs went and got some tools and I started to pull it apart. Found that somehow the dowel that locates the camgear on the cam had come out, and had ground away the face of the cam :barfy:

Managed to clean all the metal dust out of it, reinstall the timing gear and put it back together. However I must have cocked the timing marks up, as I couldnt get the dizzy timed up right, would either be too advanced or too retarded. At about 3am I gave up and called a tow truck, and had it taken home.

So yeah - a few things to sort out, and I don't really have the budget or inclination to do anything about it. Pretty gutted to say the least!
