andyball1
Hey guys newish to the forum so thought it'd be about time I sort out a build thread for my new pride and joy! Disscussion thread- //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35479-andys-1974-escort-gt-discussion-thread/ Last year my best mate bought this onyx green mk1 GT in the idea to restore her and give it to his mrs for a present. The plan was panel, paint, wheels and a 1600 motor. Sadly after afew weeks he hated the car because he should of bought a 2 door and lost interest.... so i bought it happy as a pig in shit!!! so we proceeded with the plans of the rebuild. as the car still had the original paint is was pretty clear where the problems were, but unlike other mk1's this thing was near rust free except the small squares in the rear wheel archs!! once the rust and panel beating was taken care of we went through and started the painting. the colour is a hard one to photograph as it seems to come up white on a camera but it is actually a very light blue. andyball1
update time worked on the car this weekend and got the engine bay all wired up no worries, BUT as always was just testing that the starter motor is wired up right the motor turned over once and then seized tight! FFS!!! So we ripped out the motor that was supposed to be a mint runner, then as i removed the gearbox i find a pink rag wrapped around the whole shaft, clutch and flywheel jamming it solid. FFS!!!! See the rag in pink above well motors fine so put it back in and wired it all up and tested it and it now turns over loverly now all i have to do is finish the custom throttle linkage, fill it with oil and water and hook the clutch up and thats the engine bay done! BUT ive got one small problem. i cannot find the wires for the windscreen washers in the engine bay? anyone know where i will find them?? could this be the wires for the switch inside?? any advice would be great!! andyball1
BUT................ day of cannonball run and the car was stickered up ready to go we heading up to aucks at 6am and noticed the car was really low on power for a 1600 which we thought was a tad odd but we carried on and made it to the start line. after 3 odd hours of driving and we had just started hitting the first hill of the coromandel and poof! running on 2 cylinders banging and popping away pull over to find oil everywhere! we clean up the engine bay and find the crankcase is preasuring up and blowing the oil out the filler neck and dipstick hole! but only when the motors under heavy load?? so we turn round, roll down the hill and make the slow crawl home so sadly its either rebuild or shop for a new motor by the looks. from what i can guess my rings are rooted as the filler neck is chuffing BIG time oh well she looked good i reckon!
