Mattt
Discuss: //oldschool.co.nz/index.php?/topic/35008-mattts-73-ms65-crown/ Hey So i decided i should probably finally put up a project thread on this beauty. So basically when i was younger i bought a HZ Ute. I took it down for a re-vin and the guys just laughed and said how much money you got? Basically under the paint it was just a rust pile. So i was always worried about buying another old school car. I wanted a crown for 6 years and recently finished studying to become an engineer. Thinking i can fix rust now and having some money laying around i decided screw it i'm going to get one. Criteria: Red Vinyl Interior in reasonable condition White Wof Good runner Facelift Automatic So I posted up a Wanted to buy ad on here and 2 hours later was on the phone to a guy who had an Old man special. He lives in Auckland and i live in wellington. A few phone calls and a couple of emails with some rubbish phone photos and one proffesional photo later we came to an arrangement to meet in taupo What i got: Red Vinyl Interior in reasonable-Good condition White Wof check sheet (Inner steering ball joint) Good Runner Manual Pre Facelift The Coolest Sun Visor 186 Holden Power We had an amazing trip back from Taupo in it, despite the lovely cop who gave me a ticket for no wof/rego despite the worlds best (and true) reason. Anyway I sorted the wof within a week and did a little bit of tidying then it was off to our first Oldschool club meet! It stayed that way for about a month. Then i couldn't take it anymore!! IT HAD TO GO LOW!!! A few hours later, a cutting disk and a new set of rear shocks.: Which caused this: The exhaust now hung about 40mm off the ground So i spent the next weekend with a welder, a turbo flow muffler and some 2.5" tube and bodged the hell out of it for a trip to auckland Then i slowly mucked around with a few little things and drove it daily for about 3 months. One day i was up at pick a part with a mate and i saw some mags, they were hideous but i knew they would suit the crown, having limited funds I ignored it and then 2 days later decided i had to see if they would fit....... 10 Points to the person who can guess what they originally came off.... Being a hardcore bass head from as long ago as i can remember i started to fit out the stereo unit ALOT of weekends later and i have a mostly completed stereo. It started out with a pair of rockford subs. I hit 140dB with those then they hit the max they could do so i bought some Digital Designs 512d4 subs. And about all i can add now is some sweet sweet crown porn and a stereo video for any of you fellow bass nutters... Cheers, enjoy and i will try to remember to update this as often as i can so i don't forget the shit ton of stuff i've done to it. Guest Mattt
Right so a bit of an update. This hasn't has a wof for a couple of months now. Mainly for the fact it's too low and the tyres were fucked. It's now got a full new set of LING LONG 225/45/17s on her and a wheel alignment which has meant she drives FAR better now. The alignment was that fucked that i chewed out a set of tires in about 1500kms. The most important part however is the new and improved gearbox cross member. This car was fitted with a w55 at some stage and they put some scrap steel as a gearbox cross member. It was the lowest point of the car and sat at about 50-55mm off the ground. That made my mrs nervous and the cops seemed to love it..... anyway, pictures: Old Old vs New New Fitted Thats all for now. Going to fix the exhaust leaks and paint the springs red so they look like cobras and try get a wof for her! also hoping the mrs is going to do some pinstriping. Guest Mattt
Ok a few developments. First of all it's wof time so I decided to turn my springs into "custom made cobra springs" so i sand blasted them and painted them red. When it went for the wof at VTNZ they didn't even look twice at it. The wof sheet came back with a few things, none of which surprised me and none of which will really hurt the bank. Front wheel rubbing when turning (inner guard bolt) swapped out for a countersunk screw. Right hand high beam doesn't work. (wiring fault) Exhaust leaks in 3 places and hits on diff, gearbox cross member and underside of car. Steering idler arm needs new bush and pitman arm has play in ball joint. Sticker on rear window needs to come off. All in all i wasn't walking away broke back mountain style so i was pretty happy. So tomorrow i'm going to get the idler arm and pitman arm off and try to rectify the issue with the headlight wiring. Also i need to get a new brake light switch because i know it works intermittently. Unrelated to the wof, when i bought the car it had an original HQ 202 radiator fitted which is well past it's used by date. I managed to bronze weld the inlet on before my trip to auckland about 12 months ago as it was starting to pull away but it's always leaked slightly from where the core meets the tank and it's blocked to fuck so I set out at pick a part with some measurements and found a donor radiator from a VCV20 toyota camry i think. It was in good nick and the car it came from showed no signs of overheating issues so i paid my cash and got a nice tidy overflow bottle from a AE101? corolla. (I like using toyota parts if possible) I pissed around with cleaning the well rusty radiator support and pinted it with some rust kill. Then fitted some self adhesive cork to the existing bottom mounts to prevent them rubbing through the bottom tank. Marked the holes for the top mounts and fitted 8mm rivnuts in place. A bit of mucking around later and got this result. I'm really fucking happy with it. I still need to replace the top hose as it has a couple of nicks in it but even with the holes it's running cooler than before. I still need to hook up the thermo fan switch as the fan is hard wired but hey its a vast improvement over what it was and now i'm more confident towing with the car aswell. A few pics: It used to sit just above the line when idling with the fan on. Now it's sitting like that with 2 holes in the top hose and idling for about 5 minutes. Mattt
Yes, so i bought this. It's going to be getting a supercharger bolted to it aswell. 2jzge+z But not untill it's in and running aye ash It also came with these and i removed this which left me with this Thankfully, that is not actually me. then i did this i know, should have done that first right? never the less today i spent some time with my favourite tool... The angle grinder Removed the holden engine mounts - Happiest day of my life. Shit, sorry, i'm tearing up a little..... Then assessed why the front left corner of the car has always sat a little off position Left Right See the difference? If not lets have a different look Left Right Anyway nothing my faithfull deadblow hammer couldn't solve. then i assessed the factory chassis engine mounts. Ofcourse. Some fucking prick put a holden motor in it which has the exhaust on the wrong side and in the wrong place. How did they fix that? Gas axe through the factory engine mounts........... Was never going to be much help in that state windows 7 screenshot thats better now i can actually utilise them when i start to fit the engine. Oh yeah i uncovered this too. Looks like i was just in time. image hosting 10mb limit windows print screen And thankfully there's so far very little of that. So i will grab a bit of panel steel from work and repair it next weekend as i was just making matters worse my trying to fill it with the welder. And this is also the start of what is going to be a full respray, chssis, body, everything and the replacement of all the suspension bushes. Also i'm going to get some proper lowering springs custom made. The cutties are just too unsafe. And an lsd diff. plus a few other little goodies. Check back next week for more updates
Mattt
So after Jappawagon told me that i was going to need a mid sump set up and spencer saying nah, just notch a rear sump. I decided to look into it myself. So at lunchtime today i shot up to a custom car workshop that alot of you will know to see a certain black 2jzgte powered ms65 sedan. I found a mid sump engine that had the back of the sump notched out. Shit. if a mid sump needs notching doesn't hold out much hope for me. I was talking shit... to myself.... yeah anyway when i got home and looked at mine i realised he was running a REAR sump. It just looked like it was kinda central. Anyway that gave me more confidence. Although i fully trust spencers input it's always nice to see it for yourself in person. so that said when i got home i played around with the engine. I think this will do just fine with a bit of a cut and tuck. I do however need a w57 or w58 gearbox. What i thought was a w55 is a w50 and of course will not fit. Shitsticles. Mattt
Purchased a gearbox today. Either a w55 or w57. Will have it here for next weekend. Then will have a much better idea of exactly where everything's going to sit. Still wondering about whether I should get a new driveshaft made up or if the one I have Will do the job. Depending where the gearbox sits I may have to modify it anyway and if that's the case I'll just get a new one made up.
Mattt
This morning i went down to the garage. There was glass and a broken steering lock where my flatmates ute used to be. Theiving fucken bastards. Any how a couple of hours later i actually got into the garage I grabbed some 4" exhaust tubing from work. Then cut a hole in my sump cut some of the exhaust tubing up shaped it a little and then tacked it into place then shaped all the pieces properly and got it read for welding then welded it. Those of you with a keen eye will notice the poor quality tig welding. Please excuse it, i was using argo shield as a gas and it creates a very irratic arc. Not short of penetration though. And once it's cooled down a little i will test it for leaks and clean it up a little. Then it can go for acid dipping and powder coating on monday. Mattt
ok so it's been a long ass time since i updated this and things have been happening although i noticed a few of the pics that matter haven't been taken so i'll post up what ive got. Basic photo bomb i guess: First time cutting rust out and making a new panel so i was pretty happy with the result. The plasma cutter makes life a shit load easier. I'm still finishing off the sump at the moment as i had to modify it a little more to accomodate the ball joint nuts on the steering arms but thats all sorted. The engine mounts were cleaned up so they're smooth and i'm now saving up to get a power steering box. once that's fitted i'll chuck the engine in and make up the exhaust manifold, get the drive shaft lengthened and start on the fuel system and wiring. I've decided on a colour and wheels. I'm going to paint the car mazda 6 pearl white and run 15x7 and 15x10 prostars like sheepers has however i will be painting the centers on them candy red. Fun times ahead. I'll try keep this updated but i'm better at doing work than i am updating the thread.
Mattt
So the oil pan of unbelievable time consumption is finally finished. And holy shit i actually think it came out really well. and then on wednesday i spent some time doing a few things and then BAM - all the hard work has proved to have a point. which is epic. The engine mounts on the engine side were ony supposed to be mock ups. i'm undecided yet on whether to just strip the paint of and tidy up the welds a little. Will probably get new ones lasered up nicely at work and tig them up properly i think. but for now the engine fits perfectly. A shame i dont have a flywheel or clutch at the moment but the time will come. Plenty to do in the mean time for preperation. Happy as hell with where the wiring goes through the firewall. Looks really legit i think. The correct oil filter had about 10mm clearance to the engine mount which wasnt enough to make me comfortable. This photo doesn't show it well but thanks to the legend that is joel at repco lower hutt we matched up a filter that is identical except a bit bigger in diameter and a bit shorter. So now i have about 15-20mm clearance which should be plenty. Chucked the exhaust manifolds on and ground down the flange a bit on the rear collector point as it was a bit close to the steering box. bit better now. And today i visited pick a part and got a fuel pump and sender unit from a toyota curren. Took it home and started to make it fit. Not a huge job but a bit time consuming. I got pulled off it when a mate turned up with a stuffed cv joint and then after sorting that i opened a fresh bottle of canadian club and called it a day. the random bits of crap sitting on the top of the tane were floating around in it. I'm still abit confused about what they are or why they're in my tank....... Will carry on tomorrow and if i can be bothered will post up the finished result providing i have enough shielding gas left. Damn it i forgot im almost out.
Popular Post Mattt
Well long time no see guys. After taking a couple of years to learn the guitar properly ive decided i can get back into the crown project. But i had changed my mind a bit in the meantime. I purchased and Altezza comlete rear subframe to convert the car to IRS and things have spiraled majorly out of control now. (as they always do) I went to the wrekcers to have a chat about getting a beams 3sge and 6 speed instead. I thought the weight being less and further back would help the handling. While i was there the topic came up that he had wrecked a 4wd altezza. thought nothing of it, went home to t think about the 3sge. I had previously made plans that i was also going to fit the fron subrframe and suspension from an altezza, that way i could have a real power steering rack and decent suspension. good handling etc. then i started thinking about the 4wd he wrecked and did some research. well now i have a COMLETE 4wd 2JZGE package waiting for collection. That means the front subframe, engine, trans, driveshafts, ecu, loom, suspension etc etc. The plan is: Modify chassis heavily to accept front and rear subframes and suspension from altezza Bolt parts up Replace the auto box with an R150f long shaft manual gearbox 1jz flywheel and clutch setup altezza transfer case lengthen driveshaft (suspect 20mm as thats the wheel base difference) Use Link ECU Standalone Big single turbo, modify fuel system with return line new fuel tank etc Replace factory dash with custom made unit utilising factory altezza instrument cluster aim for around 450hp replace front seats with something that hugs! Cert Drive that bitch Now i know in theory thats all fairly straight foward but i am also well aware of the impending issues (mostly with wiring tbh) At the end of this i should have the only MS65 4WD 450hp crown in the world Why 4wd you may say, well 1: because i can, 2: Because it's different, 3: I love corners. some photos of what im keeping of the chassis
