Since Im just smashing photos up, they are not in any order. Apart from 'why the fark did he put red carpet in'....

You may think you are seeing pictures twice, but no. Thats engine no.2 with little end rod failure in cyl.1, first engine was cyl.3 little end.

This occured from chasing a cbr1000rr from Kopu to Hot water beach turn off on a 30deg day, no engine mercy type dash high boost on wrecker engine.

Second occured while stepping off clutch at high rpm at 100km/hr to light wheels on m'way. Another no engine mercy effort. Boom. Fire no2!

Pity I didnt refill the extinguisher the first time! A good waste of beer trying to put it out. Didnt work as it was oil on ex wrap that caused it.

A whipping of an oily rag sure did tho.

Back to the garage for a built forged jobby then. Getting bored of pulling engines, I just want to drive it now...

Spot the odd one out, build link now listed in signature.

  • 1 month later...

Phew, its been a busy period with work work and with evenings pushing myself to get the TA22 to the next stage of its life.

What! You mean legal, it drives beautifully and looks perfect?

Sounds impossible, but getting there.

After repairing the ex. manifold that was cracked around the T3 flange and collector, the flange then warped, so after it was faced, the wastegate then didnt line up to the 3" SS downpipe. I cut the wastegate flange on the ex manifold off, lowered it a whole 4mm, then Tig'd it up again. Fits like a glove. But what a mission to resolve all that. Touch one thing, then the wash of other issues come flying in. Good time to helicoil the head for the ex studs. I think I did three of them. The ally turns to mush after a while, over torquing the manifold bolts and the heat are culprits.

LSD oil changed, looks like it really needed it, the sump magnet having a decent metal afro the size of David Tuas in his prime attached to it.

might flush it again later. Access is a bitch, so I made up a long length of hose to a funnel, topping it up for around 30 mins had it done.

Seems to run a little quieter now.

I gave the front brakes a really good scrub, since the oil line that seperated last time made a hur of a mess, rotors full of lube dont make for friction!

The brakes finally are really good, ability to modulate to almost lock on the motorway, tires chirping is too easy now.

The interior was in bits for ages so its almost all back in and the carpet install completed.

Spent time getting the gear shifter to mount properly, bought some cusco knob from toyota North Shore - good range of TRD/Cusco etc bits in there.

I wrote a few reviews of some blah cars for them recently, prius V, Lexus GS etc.

They mentioned they were to have an 'informal' launch of the new '86. I Had to get invited!

Bummer Toyota NZ management had a fight about its pre-release so it didnt turn up in the end, so neither did I.

ID1000cc injectors installed at ST Hitech and dyno'd for the re-freshened lower engine I secretly did sfa kms on prior to full boost runs. Typical me...

Not much to report apart from a fair bit quicker onto boost, better cold starting (phew), lovely smooth light throttle transition.

Thats a good thing for sure, Soichi and Rueben have done a great job with the car, which took 1.5 days of tuning to get nice.

They updated the software in the Link G4 while they were there, and adjusted the temp. factor to actually suit the thermistor/water temp sender, so it reads/calcs correctly.

For some reason it was reading 90+C when in fact we heat gun the engine coolant output at 60C.

- Minor issues raised,

- Boost fluctuation, = replace boost controller with a decent one. Mine is Hpi currently. Go for HKS EVC or sim.

- Tuning for 24lb didnt see much more power increase over the 21lb, noting the head flow as the restriction = install step 2 cams 264 intake/272 ex suggested with springs/retainers.

- full boost at 4700rpm or so is late for a 2.0 4cyl. Suggest go down in A/R ratio of the 3082r, should see full boost by 3800rpm or so. Plenty more go time to come then!

Wof has lapsed, so better get that sorted as the next job.

Next garage mission is pulling out the dash and doing some re-wiring. There are a few +ve cables that need beefing up, loose connection etc.

While Im there, Ive tested out some decent quality black leather on the glove box, as in recovering. Feels pretty maserati to me!

Ill continue with the dash next. The leather is much thinner that normal couch stuff, like 0.8mm, so it good going around corners/gauges etc. I just use bog for the big gapping holes and cracks in the old dash, then ados for the glue. Pretty grunty stuff, on the nose too sheesh.

After a test drive with Rueben, he estimates for a skyline R32/33/34 to keep up with this 'ol 1 ton clunker, it'd need 450+ rwkw's.

Thats a whole heap of hp/coin!

Dyno vid

While the TA was out, I spent the time working on the zed installing NOS bits Ive been sniffing around for and stockpiling. Damn its nice to fit new bits on the old dunga.

With the TA getting closer to its final form, the zed looks likely to be the majority of the attention.

There is a fair bit of re-fabrication work still required, but that depends on the block I use, Rb25,26,27,28,30,31, the wastegate etc. I have a few spares, but they are old and bulky.

  • 1 year later...

After getting bored with building on the house here, attention finally turned back to the TA22.

Its been 3-4 months of sorting stuff out, buying, usual things.

It has a built R154 now installed, running a w series bellhousing with an adapter plate made by some guy in the Tron, further swiss cheesed by Sheepers to actually fit.

Clutch re-built, oil soaked and cracked plates didn't help driveability...Over stroking it the cause. Oil from leaks kind of everywhere.

New Tial 44mm gate and HKS EVC 5 boost controller. Boost stability not so good before. The old M&H gate was not leaking, but only a matter of time.
Installed a water/meth injection system in the boot alongside remounting battery lower down.

Rear LSD given a freshen up, new FD3s discs and callipers installed from the crap Ford Falcon ones before.

Chucked some urethane engine mounts, found to be the cause of the intake manifold cracking, too much drivetrain movement...so, welded up the manifold for the 5th time...

Have a 5sfe at home now, so will plan the stroker build once the car is warranted again and into some minor car shows and some glorious power skids....

Big thanks to Sheepers for the help with the yucky gbox mission from the custard w55 to the tractor R154.

25kg goes to 54kg. Doof !

Stuck on some GT rear side vents /grilles, the old ones were yellowed from chroming process.

Changed the ratio of the clutch and brake so there is less movement and less pressure required.

Clutch is perfect 4.5mm stroke now. No doubt a total pig to use as per usual.
