Bantam
Not much to report. Have stripped the crazy cracked bonnet and painted it black. Its quite good, I can see why rally/race cars do it, as it stops reflection on sunny days. Paint has settled down, not so stripey now After last Wednesday's night garage session with the boys, I needed to fit a choke to the weber. It runs great, but you need to be in the car pressing the throttle to keep it going until warm when it would idle fine. I took it off as it was hard to push the choke off when warm. The panelbeater had pulled the choke cable when it wasn't connected and it had come right thru. Thought it was the metal arm connected to the butterflys that was sticky. After an enjoyable hour of garage time, I shortend the cable which got rid of a frayed piece of wire. Problem solved. Just need fine weather now
Bantam
Scored some Weber DCOE 40's. Had them serviced and set up before fitting them. Even though the Escort doesn't have a brake booster, they still rested on top of the brake reseviour lid. I had slotted the cross member when fitting the engine so tilted the motor over. Still not enough, so had to take the mounts out again and fit some washers to get the motor higher. Got there in the end, Was trying to get it all ready for the OS drags. Ran firdt start, but idled high, and adjustment to the idle didn't help. Got the friendly mechanic who serviced them to sort. % minutes kater that was sorted. Will go back after xmas to fine tune. At the drags I fouled a plug, idling to long. Quick clean and managed a 17.92 second @ 121 kmph. Fouled the plugs again at the monthly meet, so brought some hotter plugs. Seems to have worked.
Bantam
Got sick of the oil leaking from the gearbox. Had to inject oil every month into it. Jacked the bugger up and set to work. Bloody sidedrafts make the job hard trying to reach the bolts. Got there in the end. Couldn't get the box off the shalf, top was hitting the tunnel. Bloody sidedrafts again, I had raised the motor to clear the brake fluid bottle. Off with the engine mount, still no good. Finally jacked the front up even higher and bingo. Might need to clean the car and driveway of oil stains. Hanger bearing well worn, will do the UJ's as well. Plus gearbox gaskets.
Bantam
Brought a single piece drive shaft to replace this one. Pickup tomorrow. Got the Haines manual out. Not my smartest move... Followed the instructions, pretty easy. To get the extension off, you have to take out the Layshaft. No worries. Ahhhhh bloody little roller bearing every where. About this time I was thinking raid one of the boys spare gearboxes. Gave it a clean and read on. Pack the bearings in grease said the manual. Made sense so carried on. Got it back in position, fitted the input shaft. Need to get some gasket paper tomorrow to cure the oil leak between the extention and gearbox. If I get this all back together and working beers all round.
Bantam
Parts from Burton Power turned up 6 days after ordering. Was only after gearbox gaskets but the the freight was heaps so had to order pretty bits I didn't really need to make it worth while. I got bearings from Bearing Wholesale in St Johns. Brought a one piece propshaft for TM. Its at Driveshafts in Penrose getting the right end fitted. Job for the week.
Bantam
Well a month later and it's going again. Got the drive shaft back yesterday from ADL, $370 for new diff yoke, two UJ's and balance. Fitted this morning, pumped some crude oil in the box, picked up boot lid I had painted and fitted it. All good. No leaks so far. Blasted up and down the motorway. Its good to have it running again. Still have to fit the pretty bits.
Bantam
Alas the gearbox did not last. Think my reassembly was a but out. Just made it home from whangamata and 3rd gear was screaming. Power was out in East Auckland so had a free afternoon. Ripped it out and fitted a new one. Much better. But after doing the Gumboot rally this weekend, I need a sierra 5 speed. Too hard on the old girl, 100km at 4100rpm. Means tunnel needs work... more $$$$
Bantam
Changed the diff to a 4:1 on Thursday night. Scored it for $100 from wrecker. Worked a treat at the drags, knocking nearly a second off my time from last year. Maybe a new set of tyres for next drag meet.
