Mk1Mad
So. I get this text from a mate who's brother has this Mk1 Escort. Its been sitting on their driveway for a few years after her brother went overseas and never came back. I've always said, if he ever wants to sell it let me know. Long story short, after an early morning this morning I now own this: These are the specs: 1600Gt Engine (Fully rebuilt and only having run 20km since rebuild) GT Close Ratio Gearbox (Fully rebuilt at same time as engine) 6 Dail Dash Period Bucket Seats Fully Paneled a few years back so minimal rust (Seams true so far...) Personalised Plates (On Hold) Also included: 1 x 45 Sidedraft Weber 1 x 40 Sidedraft Weber 1 x 45 Sidedraft Weber Manifold 1 x Rear Antiroll BAR A Pile of Very Handy Manuals/Books Plans are in order of importance. Get a WOF.... From there on we will see. Lower it, Underseal it, Paint it, Zetec it.... We can all dream. Cheers to the boys for all the help. From left to right, Chris (Low'N'Slow), Gaz and Duncan Mean
Mk1Mad
Ok. Update time. Been slack with this one. Escort has been for a WOF and failed on 3 bits of rust, seats need cert, balance rear brakes and switch rear tyres side for side. So, sorted 2 bits of rust (drivers floor, rear pillar) - Just got front wing/a pillar to sort. Low'n'slow balanced my brakes up good as and switched tyres. Seats, pretty much cant use them without a cert so have bought two originals. I will probably keep the bucket seats and try and get them to work more like the originals. So its getting close but stupid WOF man wanted a panel beater to fix the small bit of rust... so probably going to fix it myself and take it for a new WOF somewhere else once this one goes past its 28 days. Anyway, only got pics of seats with me but will update soon enough. Also tuned it up with new plugs so its running well and chose paint colour. Mk1Mad
Anyway. Painting. Need to find cheap windscreen seals that actually fit. Rare spares and Basis are like $200 each... Got three weeks to finish. Sanding tomorrow night, may take some days off work to sand if I can.
Mk1Mad
Oh. And sold my webers and seats to make some money for paint. I try not to spend my regular salary on my cars... Sold the seats as will need cert to fit them and not planning on getting a cert. So paint costs will probably be near $1000 for all materials just incase people are interested. Mk1Mad
Wont post many words as I know how everyone loves pictures... Roof is ready for prime, also cleaned out, rustkilled and primed the drip rails. Heater bubble is back on, going to have to shoot in some cavity wax to try and seal up the bottom of it. Put on my new shocks, Comparision photo: Found that the top mounts are now solid (turned up nylon replacement bushes (previous owner was a hvac engineer) Welded up trim holes, etch primed, skim of filler and high build primer: Before: After: Started on interior, headlining out (didnt realise they were so easy to remove) Started sorting a pattern to make a rear parcel shelf Cleaned up the boot, just need to get the vac out there to clean it up. Also going to remount the battery as it was mounted in the spare wheel well. I want to keep a spare, just need to find a holddown strap. Anyway, big weekend. Hopefully not too busy at work so I can get home to work on it after... Also having problems removing the other door... A hacksaw blade and lots of time will have it in the end. Mk1Mad
Not too much progress on her of late as Ive been silly busy at work... Anyway, bought some genuine 13 x 5.5J Lotus Twin Cam wheels. Will hopefully get them blasted and painted this week then sort some tyres. Anyway, I was cleaning them up am found some writing on them. This said F Pointon, Twin Cam Escort, Masterton. I have now emailed said Francis Pointon who is still in Masterton for any further info on the wheels (http://www.pointoncollection.co.nz/). They also look to have been raced at some point as they are marked for postion on the car. Pic: Current State. Got New Windscreen and Windscreen Rubbers. Took out Engine and Box to do the bay. Wheels Anyway, time to sell the hotwires and get some tyres for the lotus wheels. Also fingers crossed I have a contact for some chrome quarter bumpers. Mk1Mad
Just had confirmation from Francis Pointon, wheels are off his old Mk1 Twin Cam which he raced in various hillclimbs and circuit races around the lower North Island. Car is now owned by Bill Williams in Auckland, plate No. DT8038. Bill also owns and races a Lotus Cortina.

Mk1Mad
OK, update time. I've been pretty slack over the last 6 months. Trying to get some time back into it in between skiing and work... I have also moved house and unfortunately now have a smaller garage. Bit of a squish now but we make do with what we have. Bought tyres today. 175/50r13 Yokohamas for $610 fitted. Cheap as chips. Removed, degreased, and painted axle including rebuilding brakes. Underseal is all flakey and is burnt off where I have welded the floor. Redoing it. Nolathane rear bush sleeves were rusted to spring shackles. Had to cut off. Need new sleeves now. Gotta clean up and paint these bits. More stuff on the list but need to put some decent time into it now to get stuff done before christmas. Need to make lowering blocks (will have leaves reset after first WOF), apply underseal so on and so forth..
