crazytim
I hate set backs.... while underneath car the other day trying to figure out why reverse lights wouldnt turn off (WOF overdue) I discovered I could see daylight thru a large crack intot he cabin... a seam was wide open, so today I am taking off work so me and my employee can strip engine out and weld the old girl up. Hoping to have engine out, welding done and engine back in by tonight... if not will take Chevette for WOF tomorrow so I can get around (may do this either way...) anyway everyone wish a boe some luck that its not any worse than what it appears... won't know till engine/box are out of the picture. Reverse lights jammed on ended up being a faulty reverse lamp switch, lucky I have about 6 spare gboxes to pinch one off! Got the WOF, lovely Korean chap based on Kaimahi St in Glenfield, recomended for people who should borderline fail a WOF. Also found my front right tyre was shredded on the inside wall from scraping the brake line mount. Not happy but glad it didn't fail on me befiore detected. crazytim
Interior gutted out to access seam to weld up... The offending seam from engine bay... Ripped out ugly patch that had been crudely tacked in over the vent hole, few rust spots no surprises there this is a T car after all! Small rust holes on other side, reckon silicone/seam sealer that was there had opened up and rusted and seam has been sucking water down inside and collecting at bottom where theres some new rust in the footwell... so anyway in short went in to do what was supposed to be a quick job and decided feck it will do tghe lot and properly! crazytim
Took car into my mates shop yesterday, he came in today (sunday) and spent 8hrs stitching her back up. Already picked it up again, stoked. Cheers Troy! I gana do the grinding/finishing to save on labour... happy to get onto this rust before it got worse (like I usually do)
crazytim
Progress Cut/Pasted from gm-t... Took passenger side guard off for first time... found more rust right down bottom. Spewing. Will get everything I'm doing done and take it to Troy again for a patch, could be worse I guess. Been hard finding time to work on the Gem but today took work off and got some more done... engine bay degreased, wet n dry papered, scotched and rinsed off ready for top coat (silver again, too cheap to bother getting colour matched) inner guards scrubbed up and have been undersealed (K+H Aerosol stuff) and front panel has been resprayed black too where paint had flaked. Next is seam sealing it all, allow to dry and finally spray bomb engine bay and reassemble!! Then off to Troy to have the rust pictured above dealt to, and spray the floor inside car with bedliner paint. Also wanna do a storm test with the garden hose to check for leaks while dash is out. Thinking of running an early TF grille on the car too, need to find some decent head lights first... reckon it will suit the chrome bumper better than the TG lights... and will run my clear TE park lamps as indicators with orange bulbs... no amber up front... Have some fog lights I might jam on as well to fill the gap under the bumper... will see if they look OK first... cant wait to get this car operational again, the red gem is no good as a business vehicle, waaaay too rough lol chucked one of the widened steels on the back for a lol... realised justy how low brads wagon is... car is blocked up on axle so this is unloaded ride height... does come down slitely when my gears are loaded up tho... Todays Efforts: sealed up seams last night, after chasing down the same colour rattle cans used when I first did engine bay I painted bay today, reacted a little to some of the anti corrosive primer I used on the problem areas but I just don't care, they all out of the way(ish) not right in view so who cares... not like I'll have bonnet up showing off my stock G161z all the time anyways! Where I left it for the day... was pleased with progress. Taking tomorrow off and having my employee Blair help me get it all back together. Want to storm test it too while dash is out and see where the leaks are... feet get wet when it rains... hard to see with dash in the way! crazytim
More pics was too knackered to upload last night... Around midday... As left last nite, needs gear oil, coolant, battery, bonnet, brakes bled and she'll run. No dash in as yet have some stuff I wann do to interior. New face. I like it. Still not sure about fog lites. crazytim
had boot tray made up... GTI Golf Factory mounting, 3 point strange set up... And this is how I have remounted after removing the surplus Golf mountings... Other view... Didn't complete the mounting, was going to have a piece coming from centre of box section bolting to the factory forward mounting point... Dummy fitted into my red wag alongside factory seat for comparison. Visually very similar but Recaro has less give in it making for a higher seated position and less head room... All that and they won't work... too high no give in the foam whereas visually the same as gemini seats the stock seats are sprung and you sink in a couple of inches. Meh! crazytim
Anyone keen on some Recaro's I have a couple of pairs... will be fine in a larger car but the narrow floorpan and small cabin space of a gemini or chevette just won't accomodate them. crazytim
Forgot to mention this... started the wagon in gear the very day I finished the freshen up... handbrake button decided to stick down... right before I parked it prior to this happening. Just glad I was in carport and not shed, could have damaged my project wagon shell... unless it had been aiming out side and not inside in which case it wouldn't have hit a thing... unless it kept going driverless until it did hit something. Point is I fuct up and thank Barry White it isn't too bad... rooted the bumper but went and picked up a replacement from troy... grill is minorly damaged but have already put old grill and lights back on, will fit bumper on the weekend. crazytim
Anyhow I fixed it next day, went back to old grill/lights. The 17s are also back on, getting a pair of new tyres this week. She also got a zorst made up from all the best bits and some new bits last week... $150 they charged, the old one hung down heaps and always rattled against my panhard rod. crazytim
Didn't realise I had been updating on http://www.gm-t.co.nz and not on here... heres a few updates relveant to the car. Aug 12 2011 from GM-T Build thread: crazytim: Finally fixed the power starvation problem, timing chain was set wrong by engine builders... GRRRRRRRRRRRRR but happy its finaly sorted, its like a different car! Sept 4 2011 from GM-T Build Thread: crazytim: this lil car is being a rite slag. Wouldnt start friday lost a day of work, thought it was just plugs finally got round to changing them today, fathers day which caused domestics and still wont start. Towed it to Troys so he could fix it in morn and ripped tow eye out and mangled front valance... almost over it! Spent heaps on that car and is still an unreliable P.O.S November 22 2011 from GM-T Build Thread: crazytim: been difficult to start lately, starter motor was fecked... had to push start it 5 times yesterday so ripped it out today and also redid my zorst flange gasket and found I had a fuel leak... anyway starts off key and sounds/goes better with zorst leak fixed, woopwoop hopefully uses less gas with leak fixed too! January 13 2012 from GM-T Build Thread: crazytim: In my travels... yes I'm a freak. July 30 2012 from GM-T Build Thread: crazytim: Was parked in Mission bay today and opened the door into a Series 2 Commie wagon. Park brake was off and I rolled a full parking spot, thank Barry White no Mrs Funt'maRunt was in front of me! July 31 2012 from GM-T Build Thread: crazytim: nuts Barry White Mrs Funt'maRunt! Got him a mean price for repairs, he wants to go the insurance route.... those Mrs Funt'maRunts had best not write off my ride! Also sweet price is from a non insurance company garage and the parts may not be available forever on that orange wag in Napier... PLUS my car is now unwofable, door doesn't nearly seal (bit windy on motorway) and only latches on the first 'click' and I am broke as hell @ the mo! : ( August 3 2012 from GM-T Build Thread: crazytim: well this grabbed my door and pushed the car as handbrake was off so just a mildly crushed door shell and panel had de-skinned itself a bit each end of door. Will be turning that into a trophy/work of art. Got off paying insurance for his repairs. Have to fix own car myself now but decided to have some fun with the rattiness of it first for a short time. Making a deal for aninja's (GM-T member) wide steels which will ultimately end up on red gem wag but will be more in keeping with green wag for time being. May even fit my bare steel bonnet of rustiness for a bit and maybe even racks : ) Damage done... door crushed, rest of car pretty sweet. Temporary door... will need to save up some pennies to get whole side resprayed... then get whole other side, then bonnet/roof/boot : ) Yesterday aquisition from Mr Andrew Shadgett aka aninja... one set of wide steels to complete rat look... will likely end up powder coated or painted and put on my red wagon I think but will look swt on this for now. These were formerly owned by Jase aka slidenyo aka mcqunt or whatever the fuck it is he goes by on OS these days... Pretty happy, would be happier if the car hadn't been hit but I can deal with the rat look for a while... red gem wag really needs paint ASAP so this will have to wait, at least it is intentionally ratty! Whereas the red gem is just old and haggard.
crazytim
Those with good eyes may notice that I'm in the back of the car... with my cleaning equipment sitting in back the rear comes down somewhat, so I am there merely for ballast for a sweet pic : )
