  1. Finally found my old pics of rust work i did on the rear corners maybe a year ago now... better late than never i guess.

Goal is to one day do rust cuts from another car so for the mean time just ground out all the rust, primed and bogged the holes :doubt:

It's okay for the time being and a year down the track still looks mint. Paint was a mish to sort, no one makes the 'persian sands' ducolour the car was painted in so just had to get an eye match made. It turned out quite well considering.

  2. So not a particularly happy update here but one none the less.

Heading down the road the other day it seems one of engine mounts came fully loose. The rubber mounts on this thing arent symetrical so this caused the other side to rotate and whole engine slid forward a few inches. Not quite sure how as i thought gbox mount would've held it back? I havent had the car off the ground to look yet so i guess that'll probably explain what happened there. Anyway the short/shit of it all is that my fan took a decent bite out of my rad and then smashed into pieces around my engine bay. Hopefully gonna pull engine and all that out of the car this weekend and start the clean up.

Also started dealing to some rust. there was a bit of surface rust on the roofline which was getting on my nerves, and holes on the rear corner, and bottom of front pillars. Started sanding them back to see what i'm dealing with so i can get someone to plate the holes. they're not nearly as bad as I was expecting but I'm a bit nervous to start sanding any of the bottom sills as i know there's not much metal left there.. It'll have to be done though.

  3. Haha yeah, well thanks everyone for the insight, I'm broke and will be out the country for the best part of this month so won't be able to do much yet, will probably try work out what inserts they are when I get a chance.

Other things is i have some front lowering springs, but they diameter for the top spring perch is too big for my struts, so I assume they're for another year KE70 or something. Can't change the top spring perch bits on their own can I? As if I can get the lowering springs to fit I'll probably just stick with that for the meanwhile, and get some 2" blocks for the back

  4. Thanks for all the help, my issue now really is all my options are relatively expensive when you're a broke student. Wonder what the cheapest option for wheels/tyres which would fit under the guards would be? I'm fine with shitty second hand steelies etc, would probably just gloss black them and slam it, but from the looks of it 13 steelies with stock balloon tyres would be pretty big anyway?

Might have to hang on to them until I've got money to get it properly slammed, or maybe pass them on. If you're interested Stan drop me a message, might sell them. Combo deal scoot and coilovers? haha

  5. Yeah you're probably right they've just been setup for smaller wheels, first pic shows the wheel propped up as high as it would go, but still couldn't quite bolt it on as it hit the guards. Would sit even lower with load, just seems odd that they are so short, especially at their max height. Couldn't really put longer springs in as the shocks are already at full extension in the photos. Bottom bolts up fine

  6. Bought some coilovers/struts off trademe aages ago from a guy who said "removed from a ke70 i'm wrecking". They've sat for a while and I finally went to put them in today, and they're ridiculously short? Like wound fully up I can't even bolt my 15" wheels on as they hit the guards. Not even just the external guards but the actual wheel tub, so so amount of guard rolling/cutting will help. Would maybe work with 13s but I'm just not sure what I'm missing. The tophats also did not line up the bolts so had to swap the tophats from my stock suspension

    vcdug0lc.2jo.jpg
    csolnbs3.uh1.jpg

They measure about 43/44cm from the tophat to the centre of the hub, and they have the same brakes/hubs etc as stock KE70 stuff?

Designed for super slammed 12" stretchies etc? Different Variation of KE70 front setup?

  7. Have had these guys come and gave me like $30 for a suzuki super carry van shell haha, completely empty, non rolling, no struts, no wheels, no running gear. It had 2 doors left on it and the boot and thats about it. Weighed nothing being a super carry shell so i was pretty stoked with that, just wanted them to take it away wasn't worried about money. It also worked quite nicely as i literally just dropped the engine and crossmember etc out the bottom of the van by undoing the crossmember and letting it drop onto the floor on my driveway then got them to crane the shell off the top, that was I didn't need any hoist or anything to take the engine out.

    Worth a try?

  8. I've had coldturkey's estate for a while now, and had no issues with the torana front set up and bmw's in the back. Only recently put the 1800 in for the 1256 and it's noticably heavier but still sweet, guess we will see with time how it settles though. Currently sits around the <90mm mark up front and the rear a bit higher. Quite a bit of front camber at that height if you go that route!

  9. 1800 in and running, got her out on the streets again and stickered up with a new wof! Got a shock when I took her off stands and the front cross member was not even 75mm off the ground ... turns out tyres were a bit soft so she's back around the 90mm mark now. Way nicer to drive, the extra torque certainly doesn't go un-noticed. Will miss the wee 1256 hammering away though ha

Couple little niggles to sort yet, one of the frost plugs on the bottom side is leaking coolant so will have to whip those out at some point. Also she runs a bit warm if you have to stop for any length of time. I've got a pair of mint electric fans I'll put in, but might have to play around and find a shorter rad if that doesn't do the trick. Still need to tidy up the secondary wiring and get my head around how I’ll make the slant look a little prettier, gearbox came without any form of sandwich plate so will need to sort that soon too, but those will all have to wait a week or two till after exams.

Yeah the side pipe thing really is just a product of not having any cash to get it done properly, having to swap sides of exhaust with fuel lines and kinda needing a car back on the road/out of the folk’s garage.. So as soon as I get a little coin I'll get a proper exhaust done. Also, out of interest Lawrence did you know the cat that was in it is hollowed out? hahah

I'll get some better pics of the engine and update the rust work I did on the guards yonks ago when I next get round to my folks as my camera's there.

  10. Right, progress: 1800 in, have had a few hiccups and bits and pieces as with anything, but pretty much sorted now. Swap is pretty straight forward its just the little niggly bits more than anything else, that takes time. Anyway, all in and mounted, cables, wiring, gearbox mounts, all that stuff sorted. Got a radiator out of a bluebird of some description at pick a part, chopped and changed and lost the cat on the exhaust, now is single resonator/muffler to a little tip out the passanger side infront of the rear wheel. Seems to sound alright, not sure yet as haven't taken it for a drive yet, only got timing, alternator and a few things sorted tonight, once the exhaust is secured to the underbody properly it'll be ready to take for a burn on the streets, hopefully tomorrow.

The front seems to sit a bit lower with the heavier engine which is a bonus too

  11. Ah shit thought I'd replied to this but somehow got lost in the process

Yeah pretty stoked with how its coming along, still love the lines on it and those massive rear side windows. I had bought a spare 1256 off Tony Lynch which I had plans to recondition as funds allowed and get the engine bay looking slick and original, however I have a mate who is putting a 4AGE in his viva so passed on the 1800 and box for cheap so figured it would be the better option to chuck that in. Box is a 4 speed manual as well. Of course being an old Vauxhall engine the only thing the old owner warned us about was it leaks oil like a sieve from a few of the top end gaskets, so we've chucked new gaskets in the top end so that should make it marginally better

Hahaha many umms and arrs were had over the whole tollroad thing, whenever we tried to pay it would tell us its already paid, so would generally pay anyway which added trips to it or something, give me your mums number bank account number and i'll chuck $13.20 through.

So yeah now have a spare 1256 straight out of the viva, and another from Lynch which is complete minus waterpump, he reckoned it was a real good runner just been sitting a while, was just gonna chuck them up on trademe and see what I can get for them, feel free to make an offer if you like

Also the new lump of metal in the engine bay means the front of the viva now seems to sit even lower, not quite catseye smashing spec but it's getting closer. Will chuck up a few pics in the project thread now. Also single pee shooter sidepipe is in, might look at turning it into shotguns like so

Nah don't get excited just an 1800 boat anchor/slant going in. Viva's been daily driven and alive since getting it off Lawrence/Coldturkey, progress been a bit slow due to student budget etc, but has had a bit of rust work and tidying up over the last year or so. Busy swapping the 1800 in now so will update soon.

  13. Can't help with transport myself, but if noone can help you and it comes to needing a company I used Advanced Automotive Towing who did cash way cheaper than any other company had quoted and the guy was real easy to deal with. Might be worth giving them a call to see if you get stuck. He ended up getting stuck in traffic cos of a crash on the motorway and taking over 2 hours to get from Penrose to the shore but still stuck to his quote and was a GC about it.

  14. Just been on the phone to state yet again. Miserable minimum wage bitch on the other end of the phone is insistent there is no way that we can change the value short of getting another evaluator, and that we can not claim the rego ourselves. Told her if we can't agree on a value then I want the vehicle returned until we do so and she pretty much just said they can't do that. Told her I will be contacting the ombudsman and likely pursuing the driver herself, and in all honesty the lady from state sounded like she couldn't give a fuck what I do.

Did then phone the ombudsman who said unfortunately they can't help, as I am a third party to State, not States client, said I could try the citizens advice bureau and possibly disputes tribunal.

    Possible thinking right now:

-Citizens advice bureau, see what they have to say

-Deregister the vehicle myself as suggested above, then tell state I will take their 2k and not mention that I have deregistered it. If they realize and ask about it argue that its an unsafe damaged vehicle not fit for sale so they should have no interest in it being registered anyway.

-Take $2000 minus $1000 buyback, dereg it, claim back $500 rego, sell in parts for hopefully close to a grand.

Right now I would be fine with the 2 grand + rego, so about $2500 all up, which is what I'm pushing for. It will still leave me a decent chunk out of pocket, but you can't win them all, bulk of money was in maintenance etc so I can't do anything about it. The last option of taking the $1000 and the ute, claiming back my $500 then wrecking it on trademe would likely fetch me the $2500 in total, but its a bit of a bastard.

  15. Sounds like a plan with the ombudsman etc, I have a daily in the meanwhile. Time is money for them too so if i keep kicking up a fuss and seeing them about it I can't imagine they will be too happy about it so would hopefully give in and negotiate to get rid of me. Its a bit of a bastard to organize actually sorting anything out myself though aswell, Dad legally owns/insures it, but I'm the primary driver. But it does mean he has to do most the negotiation. Will ideally push for a bigger payout with the same buyback of a grand(-rego ill be able to claim back, so $500 for it dereg pretty much) As I will be able to get more than $500 for it in parts, the engine will fetch a bit, wheels a little bit, also has the sweet old style wellside which I could buy another old hilux and put it on

  16. Not fuckin impressed. Talked to insurance, their evaluator says 2k, they take the ute and deregister it themselves. Or buy it back for 1k and we deregister it, but they will follow it up to make sure we do so(I would get back ~$500 odd rego though, so essentially $500 buy back)

    Options:

Pay to get my own evaluator to have a look at it, who I can only assume will be as much of an asshole as the last one, as it did have a fair few little rust patches etc.

Take $1000 + ute + $500 rego when I dereg it, end up with ~$1500 and a crashed deregistered ute. Then strip ute for parts and hopefully fetch a bit of cash there. They want me to sort my own transport for it back to mine(its in albany at the moment) so that would also be a cost, however I reckon I could probably argue that they fucking took it away so they can put it back where they got it from.

??? Disputes tribunal or something, try push special interest vehicle + my old agreed value of $2800 with AA?

So far all the options I can see involve me getting screwed by it, ending up at least a grand out of pocket, and looking for another Hilux. Gutted. Would like to tell them to stick it at this stage with their offer, just trying to see what the next step will be. Could probably get back close to a grand from stripping the hilux, but still that's not ideal. Especially considering as you guys have pointed out, its their problem that they are trying to fix for the other drivers fault

  17. Will keep that all in mind. Have spoken to my insurance at the time of the crash but they said there isn't a lot they can do as I only have 3rd party and its her fault. Chassis straight, firewall not damaged, I have a spare screen. Parts for these aren't too bad to find. Basically it would still be pretty repairable with a cut and welded front end onto it, or a cab swap.

Ideal outcome for me at the moment would be a reasonable payout, with the opportunity to buy it back still registered. I know they wouldn't want to do this, however as there is $600 rego on it, I will say I will buy it back and deregister it myself to claim back my years rego on it. If they go with this that would be awesome, otherwise I will say I'm not happy with the value unless they add $600 for the rego. If i get it back still registered the damage is definitely repairable so would likely leave it and see what I can sort to repair it. Worst case they either dereg it, or follow me up and make sure i deregister it. Even then its probably worth more than what I would buy it back for, and I could claim back my rego.

Somewhat related: Anyone know how universal the front end would be? Like if I was to get someone to cut and weld the front end from another cab, would it have to be an LN41? Or would I be able to find a similar era hilux front end and chuck it on, then put LN41 external guards and stuff on it?

  18. not necessarily(spelling????) de regd. just dont let the ute leave your driveway. make the valuers come to your house.

i got my bike back for 600 with live rego and wof still on it

they wont offer you a buy back. when they make cash offer and you are happy with that, ask how much to buy it back(before you accept the offer). they will pay the balance of the sum and leave it at that.

edit: and yeh. they are HER insurance. basicaly they are sorting out her fuck up for her. you can negotiate whatever you want.

Wish I had seen this post before 2pm today, state sent a tow truck today who towed it to a local panelbeater, leaving it on the tow truck took a couple of photos of it, had a chuckle and said its fucked, before moving it off to the insurance yard. That's obviously not the final word but its pretty clear they are going to write it off from that, so am now awaiting insurance to get back to me on whats happening. What I will most likely do is phone them and tell them that I have an agreed value with my insurance company(AA) of 2.8, in hopes they will just leave it at that and go with the same value. I mean it's not an enormous amount of money and would save them a bunch of admin shit and getting evaluators to scope it out, but still doubt they will. Ah well, its really a waiting game for now, the ideal outcome would be they pay out a reasonable amount and I can buy it back cheap enough.

  19. Thanks for all the help and suggestions, I definitely don't expect to get back everything I've spent on it all up etc, thats just not how it works, shit happens. However if I end up getting paid out too much less than $2500 I'm not gonna be too happy, but I guess we will see.

Will definitely also talk to them and see what the story with buying it back is, however I assume they would deregister it? So would only be good for parts then really, still would probably be keen though if they will sell it cheap enough, as chances are I'll be shopping for another pretty similar diesel hilux, ideally also an LN41. So could chuck sweet old school wellside on it and put my new tailgate to use, then sell the rest of it or part it out. A good runner 2L seems to still fetch a bit of cash.

  20. Yeah thanks all, I also got the sense they wouldn't bother fixing it and just write it off, as much as I don't want them to. Am also currently a poor student in the middle of exams, like literally I had an exam today, tomorrow etc continuing until late next month, however will definitely fight to try get a decent price for it at least, have put a fair bit of time and money into it recently.

I am insured 3rd part fire and theft with AA, which doesn't help, because it didn't catch fire or get stolen, and was her fault so her insurances problem. With AA my agreed value is $2800 or so, which was their suggested market value, but that really means nothing, because she is insured with State who are going to actually view and evaluate it obviously. Ideally I would like to be able to at least talk to their evaluator as he looks it over, its a bit rough around the edges but definitely a work in progress, would like to at least be able to talk him through that it is being fixed up etc and I have a bunch of shit at home waiting to go into it to tidy it up, so its a rat style as opposed to a rustbucket

  21. So a lot of you would know Vince/P_Star's ratty matt black hilux from around the forums or up for sale recently. I bought said ute from him and was mega stoked with it, such a sick truck, and have set about tidying it up a little and sorting a few things out.

However, some ditsy bitch decided she would rather not check for cars or give way when entering a roundabout and pulled out infront of me at the last second, punching in the front left corner of the hilux when we collided, obviously her fault and a cop pretty much witnessed it, was on scene before i had even gotten out of the ute. This will have been 3 weeks ago tomorrow, and she only got around to sending her insurance form in yesterday so she has only been found officially liable now. Insurance are now wanting to tow my Hilux to a local garage where they will send around an assessor/evaluator to decide on value and whether to repair or payout.

Anyway, TL;DR of above is I've been in a crash, other driver is liable, and she is insured. However I now have a number of concerns and issues as to what I should be doing to try and not end up getting way underpaid. I paid $2500 for the ute, have since replaced the clutch, driveshaft(UJ broke), oil, filters, front brake hoses, fluid etc, and bought a brand new tailgate off seedy al for it which I still haven't even fitted.

My concern is that an insurance evaluator will have 50 vehicles to evaluate a week, take one look at it, see it as a shitty matte black rusty 80s ute, and not decide to fix it and rather write it off and try to pay me next to nothing for it, as opposed to seeing the good points of it(running gear is mint, 210kms) and seeing any value in it as a project as it is to me. So not sure what I can do to convince them otherwise, chances are they will write it off but I'm just worried they will try give me $1500 for it or something ridiculous.

My main question though is does anyone know what the story with claiming back rego and RUCs is? Literally a week before the crash I had put ~$600 on it for registration for a year, and had also put on just under $200 of RUCs a few weeks before that. You see if i dereg the ute myself then I have to have the plates, but I doubt insurance will be happy if I dereg it not them, and if they don't write it off then I've shot myself in the foot big time. However if they take it, write it off and dereg it, will they be able to claim the rego back? and more importantly will they then pay me?

Massive wall of text, sorry, have tried to highlight the important bits. Ute before:
