  1. car cut out again today! removed plug to coil and used a LED test light to check the out puts of the igniter pack. found one trigger signal missing. finally diagnosed the problem . to get car home haha i done this. remove igniter and coil. got my mate to pick me up. put igniter in his freezer 4 a while. wraped igniter and coil in a bag got a bag of ice and wraped coil and igniter up with the ice. went back to car. car started first pop and i was able 2 drive all the way home now where do i find a new igniter hahaha any ideas any one? or can i adapt another one to fit? i wodnt mind geting another coil too. cheers for all the help guys
  2. definately a spark problem as i hav no spark when it faults
  3. evening all . no i have not asked on hybrids yet. i might have to sign up aye. My car is a 1984 model and i am the second nz owner. got it completly stock standard off a old man bout a year ago haha. mods iv done so far are exhaust system, external wastegate plumbed to atmosphere of course (fun job of pulling it on haha not as simple as putting one on a RB as manifolds are on the same side.) and lowering and rims. lots more to come after fixing this prob. ok next step to trying to solve my ignition problem. today i started up my car. started first pop and ran fine. i removed the plug from igniter to coil. hooked up a LED test light to earth first. 1 pin is ignition. others hav no power. then i hooked the LED to power. found one pin is always earth. the 2 others are pulsed earths when cranking. so now i kno what the igniter packs out puts are when car is working fine. then i put it all back together as normal n started her up. hmmmmmm now i want this car to fault so i can check if there are any changes to the outputs of the igniter. if all outputs are the same i can point probs to be the coil i spose. so i put it back to normal n run it for at least an hour waiting for it to cut out. but it freeekning wouldnt hahaha. id say because i am just letting it idle its not putting enough stress on the electrical components to make them fault. i dont want to keep reving it till it cuts out and upset the neighbours either haha. so i spose i mite have to get someone to follow me and test it on the road side when it faults. hardly ever does it and when it does i end up towing it home and when i get home it starts up straight away hahaha. I spoke with old owner of this car today and he told me he had encounterd the problem before. he brought it to garages that couldnt figure out the problem as everytime he brought it in it wouldnt fault hahaha. i very much think im on the right track to having it sorted its jus waiting for it to fault next so i can test out my theory. i spose i could of jus spent a whole lot of money replacing everything with new stuff (thats if i could track the parts down, geting a replacement CAS was hard enough) but i want to learn more about these old L series motors .
  4. the pictures i have put up are the coil and igniter that are from my car. the coil has 4 wires coming from it too. it is a factory l20et and that is the factory coil set up. i have looked at a l20e motor and the coil set up is like what you are thinking of. P.S. i have also replaced the coolant temp sensor to ecu and car still cuts out. so i am very much pointing the problem to be the coil or igniter. just dont know how to go about wiring up another coil. as my coil has 4 wires coming from it and it must use info from the igniter and deliver info for rev counter. has any one gone and ditched this igniter and coil system and wired up sumthing aftermarket?
  5. hey thanks for the help. is the thing you call the power transistor mounted on the coil? i thought that was the igniter? what does this transistor look like? if you go up and look at my pictures of coil. the one with the blue sticker is the part i think u r meaning?
  6. ok, iv got a 2 pin coil i can try on it. i have just looked at the coil on the car and it has a igniter on top of it. the coil has a plug from it with 4 pins that goes to the igniter. how do i go about wiring up this 2 pin coil?
  7. ok ill try that. what type of coil did u use? and what part numbers. or does any1 kno of a sports coil that will fit this? cheers
  8. replaced CAS today. car went fine. haha went to drive home from work and it cut out . towed it home. hooked up a timing light. put it on number 1. had no spark. put it on coil lead to dizzy. still nothing. checked for injector pulse. has pulse. fuel pump primes. has fuel. and can smell it out the back of the exhaust. this problem is really anoying me now. spent $200 for new CAS. parts master managed to match it up with something. but i still have the cutting out problem. the reason i pointed out to the CAS was the reason for no spark when fault occurs. but oviously its not that. the next step i took was waited till car was cold again. car started first try. turned it off. disconnected the coolant temp sensor plug. tried to start it and car wouldnt start. so i check for spark with it unpluged. has spark. but car dont start. seems odd but i still think it has something to do with the temp sensor. so i will replace that tomorrow. i think rb30e ones are the same.
  9. evenin, no it dont look like that.i opened up my dizzy today and it has a crank angle sensor set up in it. not rely a ignition module. i am trying to get car to cut out again lol when i want it to do it it f**kn wont! it wod be connected to the ecu id say and would also need to work to get injector pulse. so when it cuts out next il chek for injector pulse. any one kno what would be a good sports coil for it?
  10. hi all, i am new to this site. i have a r30 skyline running a l20et. it has a problem with the ignition module. some times looses spark and car stops. wait a while then it runs fine. i have replaced it with a second hand 1 but now thats craped it self too. i have tried to get a new module for it from parts master, repco etc. but they all have no listing. cant even get a dizzy cap for it. any 1 kno of any other dizzys i cod adapt to fit? mayb use the guts out of a rb30e dizzy? has any one done this? any help or ideas would be very much appreciated. thanks this is my car
