  1. So wifes car using oil, no leaks no smoking but using it anyways. Diahatsu Sirion 2004 man 1.3 Done 144k. Garage says engine internals so either replacement engine or rebuild. I trust the guys at my mechanics. It sounds like a major, fair enough. Can I just keep running it, topping up oil and cleaning/changing plugs? Basically will it get worse and worse and can I fix engine later? Or should I do it now so it doesn't stuff the rest of the car?

  2. Oil slick happened to me when I was 17 in my '66 1100. I had the old non cartridge oil filter that must have blocked somehow, ripped the central bolt and thread out of the block. knackered the canister, but retapped a new bolt and got a few pick a part bits. All fixed for about $4 + oil and filter which hadn't been changed in about two years.

  3. usual thing, person buys it then takes it to their workshop and gets it checked. they were nice people but AFAIK their fault, not mine. Had a very fresh warrant and I get the feeling these people want me to come to the party, but it ain't the kind of party i wanna go to- know what I mean? Their mechanic quoted them on engine mounts @ $75 a throw when you can get them for 30, and he also said the rear brakes need work and there is something wrong with the suspension. Surely a warrant check would have thrown up anything serious? Anyways, I'm sure many of you have been through this exact situation, any advice? they got her under what I was asking too, so in a way I've already subsidized $400 worth of work.

  4. I do appreciate your dedication, but the non 4dr was a deal breaker. Kids in car seats = cee you next tuesday to do through front doors only. Used to have a 2 door surf, still miss it but don't miss contorting myself to click the little one in. I have come to terms with driving a grandma car, if your grandma has long hair and a big ginger beard then she needs a little more HRT

  5. Cars were so expensive in NZ whan that ad was made, that they would have waterblasted the underside clean, and then sold that car to some poor cunt who had been on a waiting list for 6 months to buy a new car. (And he wouldn't even get to pick the colour)

If you want economy, buy a honda city. They use no gas. Plus they're really old. And you wont have to worry if you're in a crash in it. cos you'll be dead.........

The last bit is what i worry about

  6. since when does wife get to chose car? edit: get ford KA btw. have driven cape to bluff and they are the best car money can buy if you only have like 5 grand. will hold value better than a sirion. they havnt gone down in price for like 5 years realy

Need 4 dr version? 2 kids to go in the back.

  7. Just start manipulating her into the world of old cars. Insist they will make her life better. Tell her that windows make great aircon. And that her friends will think she is cooler for driving an old car etc etc..

We've been married for almost 10 years and thus far she hasn't warmed to them

  8. Here here (or hear hear?)

Even better. Buy old car pre 1972 (Austin 1100 etc) and leave a little bit earlier. Or swap in a diahatsu engine...

I've got a Morris 1300 here but this is for she who demands a/c and other such modern features
