Let me know if it does fix it..
KK, you sir, are a champion!
I finally got a replacement valve, fitted it and hey presto, we have idle...
It also runs smoother, isn't as rich (you could smell the fuel vapour), and doesn't run on anymore.
Frosty cold beer next time I see you
(unless for whatever reason drinking isn't appropriate at that time...)

Cool project, had a LOL at the safety measures on the Sunny whilst playing with wheels.
What's the load rating of a lump of wood?
-
reason it cost so much because it was attached to underground cables
This is my line of work and yes, poles range between $8k and as much as $20k depending on what is attached to them. If it has a transformer on it then its definately at the top end of things. Even running over a plastic pillar at the end of your driveway will be around $1k.
I don't work in your area/different company, but most companies will hunt you down and if not sell you to Baycorp we have so many car vs. poles each year it does get costly.

With all those extras, this mighty 1.0 litre made exactly 1 hp more than a Holden Starfire motor

haha, technically they are called zoom-stripes. They are a copy of the Brabham Viva stripes.
This add is LOL

Yeah it was ex-Nelson area two owners ago - one family since 1973 or something crazy. I got it off a guy up north.
I picked it up as soon as it went on TM. Have been looking for a tidy road going one for ages and they all disappear pretty quick so jumped on this one.

Yeah it's a Viva one. But an early HB rack which is a bit different to the later ones which I have several of...
-
Right, after a disappointing day of working on cars, it seems like I'm going to have to get a rack rebuilt because none of my spares are quite right.
I've heard PG Hydraulics in Auckland do rebuilds on P/S racks but need to see if they do normal racks.
Beaver also got one rebuild somewhere recently on his trump but can't find the name of it.
Any recommendations?

So I took it for a WOF check during the week at a local place which seemed like a reasonable place but not somewhere I'd been before.
Came back with 17 things to fix, a variety of lighting, steering, suspension, wheels (had original ones on it), seating, right down to a door hinge being worn (it's still one of the better ones on Vivas I've owned!).
First things, I chucked on the new wheels to make it look good (also addressed 3 of the WOF issues).
Then I took them off to fix stuff underneath.
Steering rack is shocking - rough and the bearings are worn - it had to come out and I thought I could swap in a good HC one I have as a spare but the shaft to the steering column is about half an inch too short and I can't bodge it up.
Decided to open up the rack and have a look at the inner workings. Was filled with brown rust water grease... not really grease at all Will send it away for reconditioning. Name of the place escapes me at the moment.
Some bushes were no good, but everything is available for replacements (this particular one is common with Torana). Might also upgrade the radius arms to HC parts which are gruntier and have a kink in them to clear wider wheels.
Next steps, needs a new wheel bearing, attack the rear brakes to make better and improve handbrake, sort seats and and door hinge.

Don't be so lazy, polish your wheels... I did mine on the weekend *smugface*

I haven't had much to do with these motors, they are OHV right? If so, we have gazillions of profiles and will be able to sort you something easily.
Yeah OHV/pushrod. Sweet will wait until I get my parts engine and measure the stock profile then come chat to you (well, via internet) about what you can do.
-
Oooh, let me also hijack this thread.
Do you guys have any cam profiles on file for a 1256cc Vauxhall motor (Viva, Chevette, etc - lame huh)? Had a good Kelford grind on a 2300 Bedford cam once which still had a spec sheet on file.
Have read some old tuning books about those engines and they reckon increase cam overlap by 10 degrees and add about 0.02in lift - how much could you get out of a stock single cam in terms in increased lift/duration/overlap? I would think you could only get lift and duration on a stock cam by changing profile of the lobe and decreasing base circle?
Sad how I have 2x 4AGE and 1x 2JZ twin cam powered cars but want to play with tuning Vauxhalls

An update, (and KK I may have to buy you a beer for your awesome armchair diagnosis)
Pulled the stupid thing apart on the weekend and would seem that the green and black valve is at fault.
Didn't seem to operate correctly at all, i.e. no valve action whatsoever when vacuum applied to it. Also seemed to be a bit of petrol in it, so not sure if vapour mixture is being sucked back up into it, or what?
Is running like a sack of shit at the moment so will get a new valve and see how it goes.

I'll grab a couple of the white ones please, if I turn up.
It may be written elsewhere, but what are the dimensions of the different sizes?

In case anybody wants to say something about my No.2 Viva...

Well, seeing how owning multiple of the same type of car seems acceptable around here, I thought I'd start a project thread on my latest acquisition.
I bought this 1967 Vauxhall Viva HB SL90 a few weeks back now but due to other things going on this has been the first weekend I've been able to work on it, take photos etc.
Did a few little jobs today so it can go for a WOF check, but mostly just played around with it.
The SL90 is the higher spec HB Viva, so has more plush vinyl seats, wood grain veener on the dash, front discs as standard (as opposed to drums) and a few other minor improvements.
It's got an 1159cc motor, with a slightly-better-than-stock cam and a Weber 28/36 DCD carb. When new, 45 years ago it was meant to produce 69 BHP.
Interior is largely complete, but a bit tatty in most places, looks nice from far, but far from nice. Will get some attention in the future.
Nice wood grain veneer and bus sized wheel.
Even has an orginal AM radio - "His Master's Voice" with a single centre speaker. Works too...
The wheels that came on it aren't right - they're 4x100mm not 4x4" (101.6mm) so they can go on a Corolla we own instead. I rummaged through the parts store of bits I've hoarded for Vivas over the last 10 years and there is a reasonable set of 13x6" Ward alloys. Had a play with them for fit and seem to fill out nicely. Will get some 185/60/13 rubber on them maybe this week.
Then applied generous helpings of Autosol and elbow grease
Also in the parts bin I've got a front sway bar, some rear low springs (need to get fronts made), a GT40 coil, and some gauges (oil, tacho, etc) which will get fitted over time.
Plans are to get a WOF on it, swap wheels over, then fit some of the other bits. I got a 1256cc motor with it as well, so one day might build a fresh engine but the 1159 goes okay for now.
Here it is with its stable mate...- 3

I had a lockup out at Gracefield, was a reasonable place. Depends how spendy you are and proximity to your home etc.
http://www.gpi.co.nz/html/Storage.htm
Have put it up on here before and Mr Borgweiser knows it. The owner is a reasonable sort as well. Have a range of units from v.small to enormous but may not have right size for your needs.

Sell house and buy industrial unit to live in? (could also solve earlier housekeeping issue)

I have one of these in the race car and it is generally okay when driving, but a bit shit if you want to clear the window first time round - really needs some heating in it.
Use towel / then fan.
There were some on the tard a few years ago that were a low profile heated blower that could sit on dash, or get a 12V travel hair dryer and strip the guts from it.
-
Oooh I may just have a Viva with a WoF by then must put door back on Celica so it can go outside and Viva can get shed time for repairs.
(shit is like The Castle round here at the mo, "could you move the Camira, I need to get the Torana out so I can get to the Commodore...")
Strathmore, seriously, that is like the furthest most point from my abode
Variety is good though. Can I propose a Petone-ish / J'ville / more central location for a later month? No particular venues pop into my mind at present .
-
Was hoping I might have the time (and a WoF'd old car) to come to this but may have to pass
Anyone want to write my essay on knowledge management instead so I can attend?
-
Yeah have already been in contact with Mark, he can assist with parts procurement
Also he did some workshop consultation on my behalf and confirmed what KK said.
-
...to the extent I had a brand new one in my toolbox to fit when a car showed the symptoms
Unlikely you've still got one decades later?
Yes, quite likely to be that valve, and significantly more than $30...Trial and error repairs are so much easier when someone else is paying for parts will investigate further to confirm functioning of said valve.
-
Green and black valve on drivers side seems familiar from today's rummaging - will investigate further.
Are they generic that can be bought somewhere or do I have to part life savings with Mr Toyota for genuine parts? Wouldn't fancy my luck with pick-a-part/wreckers for that kind of thing.
Thank you Encyclopaedia K-Trips

Has got the slide type carb, like a vertical SU/Stromberg thing.
Oh, it runs fine all the rest of the time, good response under load (well as good as a 2E does!), just hot idle is wrong.

Not sure exactly who owns it now, think it's the brother of a guy in ChCh I know. Was originally built with a supercharged 4AGE in it, then the owner changed to 1UZ but never quite finished it and sold it on.
In 4AGZE spec it was what inspired me to buy and start building my blue one in 2002 and ended up donating sump/extractors/mounts etc for mine.
