  1. Made my giant 'washers', then discovered that the slotted holes in the engine plate did not line up with the holes in the engine. I wondered why it had really skinny bolts on one side.

I had to file the holes 4mm wider! Good thing I made those washers about 50X50mm :D

Engine is mounted now, with M8 cap screws and nylock nuts.

That big bottom spring for the headset was a bit of a bitch to get in. They cleaned up really nice, they looked like stainless or something!

  2. Managed to find a 1/4 unf tap to fix the thread in two captive nuts, so I could put the flywheel cover on. And two replacement bolts.

Damn hammerite is taking aaaaaaages to fully cure. So I haven't mounted the engine back in the frame yet.

My rear sprocket is due Nov 6th.....

I did use the polishing compound on the rusty rear mud guard.

    IMAG3066.jpg

And pushed the headset bushes in.

I think I could probably get a tophat mount thing machined to fit the front wheel and put a mountain bike disc brake on there. The wheel seems to be a split rim with cap screws that could be used to mount the top hat thing.

  3. I guess I can't treat my mini bike as a bicycle and ride it 18km down the Hutt River trail to work?

I must do it at least once. I've not decided if I will park in the bicycle shed, or in the motorbike park. :P

I only need to cross three roads.

But there is a section where there is a sign. "No motorized vehicles". :( which I cannot get past without riding along a road.

  4. Found a 45 tooth flat plate sprocket for 41/420 chain on Amazon. $56 with the shipping from 'Murica. Supposed to arrive earliest Nov 3rd. Waiting waiting....

It will need the center bore machined, I can drill the bolt holes myself using the original as a guide.
I guess I could/should paint the frame while I wait. I think I'll stick with the original colour which looks like light blue hammerite hammered finish to me.

And wire up an ignition cut wire/switch instead of the strap that earths the spark plug(LOL!).

And drill/tap the two stripped bolts at the bottom of the flywheel cover.

  5. Pressed the bearings into the wheels on the weekend. One wasn't particularly tight, so I used some loctite. I hope it works.

John Brooks was a no go for a sprocket. They don't have anything in the right size and would have to get it made. It would ahve been about the same ~$100 price as sprocketsnz.

But my clutch and chain arrived this morning.

The clutch has its own keyway...errrr key. The crank has a keyway slot. I hope it's the right size.

I just realised on the weekend that the crank has no bolthole in the end. And the clutch has no grubscrew things.

There are marks on the crank that make me think the original clutch had some grub screw thing to stop it sliding off.

How do I keep the clutch aligned with the rear sprocket? Will I have to make a retaining collar thing?

  6. Yep, just like that. The pads are jammed in pretty tight and the holes are 6 mm. Have you tried a motorcycle shop for a blank sprocket ? might be cheaper but still the drilling etc might add up.

I did. They went through the whole catalog while I was there.

I have a plan B using a sprocket with a much larger center hole than I need.

None of their suppliers had blank 420 sprockets.

They suggested I try John Brooks Transmissions on Hutt road.

  7. What's wrong with the rear sprocket on it now ? My muffler is an exhaust extension with a centre tube drilled and filled with ss polypads, quiet enough. I'll find a pic.

As the others have said. Yeh, it's super worn. Also, the pitch on the sprocket/clutch I can get is 0.5", but the pitch on the original sprocket is much smaller..

    Is your muffler like this?

  8. Tried to make a muffler...

    It was..... not so effective.

The end plate has a bit of square section(didn't have any pipe that small) tacked to it, it's blocked off at one end and drilled full of holes.

It reduced the volume to just below ear bleed level.

I tried packing it with stainless wool.

    It made almost no difference.

I'll try replacing the square section with a few round plates with small holes drilled in them.

Has anyone made an effective muffler for one of these? It's currently louder than my gsf250 bandit...

  9. I'm not sure what size rear sprocket to go for with this 3.5hp engine.

I have no idea what the original front sprocket tooth count was.

The original rear sprocket is ~187mm diameter, with 60 teeth.

If I get the $45 clutch, I will have a 10 tooth front sprocket for #420 chain.

Using a sprocket calculator, it's 45 teeth for the same 187mm dia. I guess that would be similar to the original ratio?

Fletch suggests 10:40 teeth with the honda clone.... but that's 6.5hp?

  10. Pm Kirk on this forum. He's a useless drunk, but knows a think or 2 about these motors. Failing that, buy a 6.5hp gx200 clone and you'll never look back...

You'll also drain the old wallet when you find all the hop up kits you can buy from the states though, but with a 6.5 horse, exhaust, air filter and governor removed, this will do wheel stands

I'll stick with the original engine for now. I just want to get the bike going.

What does the governor do? And how does it work?

  11. So I bought this old tecumseh 148cc 3.5hp mini bike from my work mate. He has had it since he was 7 and he is in his 40's.... It hadn't run almost 30 years....

I changed the oil and put some gas in it. Wouldn't start.

Cleaned the sparkplug. Broke the pull start cord.

Replaced the pull start cord and bought a new sparkplug. Wouldn't start.

Dismantled and cleaned the crap out of the carb. Still wouldn't start(even when using the drill to turn it over).

    Googled.

Cleaned and adjusted ignition points and checked plug gap.

    STARTS!

So now I need a clutch, it's missing.

    And a chain.

And a rear sprocket because the current one is super worn.

The frame is cracked below the headset, so I need to weld that.

I'll make up a new exhaust too, the current one is rusty as fuck.

Does anyone know of the cheapest place to get parts for these?

I've found www.ombwarehouse.com. The have loads of stuff and it is pretty cheap. $35 for the clutch. But shipping would have been $60 :(

There is a lot of stuff on ebay too. But the cheapest shipping options were about $30 from 'Murica.

The current cheapest option for the clutch in NZ is these guys, for $65. But they just do gokarts so don't have any other parts. www.gokartsdirect.co.nz

  12. <I'm no expert.> But I would guess that the size of the tube and nut should suit the springs. Not the strut. Pretty sure the springs only come in one, or possibly two standard sizes.

If you get/find smaller diameter tube to fit your struts, the nut may be too small a diameter and not support the spring. Unless you plan on machining a ring to fit over your nut and support the spring.

I'd probably get threaded tube to suit the springs, then machine a stepped sleeve/collar to make the tube a good fit to the strut.
