  1. Welcome to the first of many all makes and models "Pre 1985 car meet and greet".

Come down to Lake Karapiro just south of Cambridge and meet a bunch of other pre 85 fans and their cars. We know they are the only ones worth talking about.

$5 entry per car (all money goes to the Tourette's Association of NZ to assist with their upcoming Camp Twitch)
    (More below touch here)

Camp Twitch is a bi-annual camp to bring children and their families with Tourettes Syndrome together in a safe environment where they won't be judged and can enjoy the company of others like them. The Tourette's Association doesn't receive any government assistance so survives purely on donations.

We will have some awards to present at the end of the event. Categories will be posted soon and all trophies are sponsored by the awesome team at The Gumboot Rally.

    No Dogs
    No Alcohol
    No Drugs
    No Skids

Post 85 cars are welcome but will have your own carparking area.

  2. you mentioned your tuner suggested DHLA40's were too big, I suggest your tuner didn't quite mean that or he doesn't know whadeestalkinabeet.

Most 1600s that run a twin sidedraught setup will run twin 40s to provide room for engine modifications. The size of the carb (40-45) means nothing other than what main venture (choke) size it can run. a DHLA40 can take a maximum of a 36mm choke, whereas a DHLA45 can take up to a 40mm choke.

A 1600 engine that makes peak power a 7500 rpm should run around a 34-40mm choke. A typical BDA choke for a 1600 would be 38mm for track and 36mm for rally. Maybe yours is choked a bit too big so is losing port velocity down low. Id suggest taking it to a decent carb tuner with a dyno and getting them set up right, it could make a world of difference.

mine are 45mm . he suggested 40mm and he knows what he is doing he normally messes with escorts and such but lets be real a 4age is just a bda ford motor refined

but your information is exactly what I have found time and time again thank you.

and as for a proper tuner Im waiting till i have the cash to swap to 40mm one then a tuner with a dyno will be the best way

  3. on the way to the skid pad I ran it for a wof - mainly so I had a fail sheet if I had trouble from the boys in blue.

most of it is easy stuff.

the brake one is what I would like some ideas on.

do I just fit new pads or should I get the booster rebuilt?

Front shocks have left to get shortened.

snapping an axle effectively removed the locker (at least my rear brakes were even)

the rest is pretty straight forward.

  4. Since the last update I had the car tuned. Tuner is saying 45mm Dellorto are too big for the factory 4age (this is what my research has found as well)

but car runs alot better he also fitted an oil pressure guage so its good to see that working.

A few of the Naki boys organised a Skid pad day so not one to say no I chucked a locker in and went and had a play.

infortunatly - Predictably - I blew an axle on the second time out (first one I used as a shake down ) so didnt really get going was still a good day out.

    4age Kp

    4g63 na Colt

    13Bt Ke70

    i think 4L escort

  5. Small update.

did oil filter and plugs on the weekend. Suddenly the car has life above 5,000rpm shes alot quicker now so good result.

pulled the diff out for an inspection and discovered its a U code (Larger of the ones that fits the KP housing) so thats a good result also the diff oil looked fresh and all the parts in great condition.  I replaced the oil and sealed her all back up.

Ordered the fuel pump today so she can sit on a solid 3.5psi and I can look at some tuning.

  6. ok so in the lead up the Gumboot Rally.

thursday I took her to work to make sure it was running right turned out I had a mean water leak after taking all of the water lines off I discovered the previous owner had use fuel line and a bolt to block up some water take offs and no hose clamps so as soon as it got up to pressure it leaked.

so I used hose clamps to stop that for the weekend.

Friday morning I took her to work all loaded up ready to head to Pukekohe for the night as I pulled into work to put the window up the gear on the window winder fell apart. Luckily I found one in Waitara and got that on my way to puke.

On the way to Pukekohe I realised that the second hand wheels I had purchased had not been balanced and it was too late to get it done so I shook it all the way to Pukekohe.  On the Saturday morning while everyone registered at the start line I shot to Carters Tyres in Puke and the owner opened up early and balance all four wheels for FREE absolute legend I will be dealing with him as often as I can.

    How does she run,

It starts and drives even starts well when cold and the chokes are not connected. Rich is how I would term it between 10-12 on the Air fuel guage and there is no real point reving higher than 5,000 rom the power just doesnt get any better.  But OMG its fun especially on the gravel.

It was fast enough to enjoy it all weekend and have a lot of laughes.

heres some pics of it and its friends on the weekend.

  7. 3 days till gumboot rally

Marc from Marcs Automotive Electrical came back around last night and we are FINISHED.

starts stops charges all the dash lights work.

All thats  left to do is a wheel alignment fit the dash cluster and change the thermostat.

the classic thing is the fans are louder than the motor its classic.

and it has a nice quiet exhaust as well so on the long trips it wont be annoying.

Im wrapped all the work is about to pay off

    HyperPak

as mentioned before I purchased a Hyperpak ignition module for the timing. reasoning was price for $330 I would retain electronic ignition. (thoughts were by the time I got a 4k one and converted it to electronic it would be a similar figure and the 4age dizzy looks nicer.

So when you get the hyperpak its a simple hook up. 6 wire hook up.

3 to the dizzy and the colors match (easy)

1 to negative of the coil\

1 to ignition and positive of the coil.

    1 to earth

we hooked it all up and went to start the car and no spark.  The Hyperpak got thermo nuclear hot and I was quite frankly shitting my self with the dead line looming.

back to the instructions I checked one bit that I hadn't given as much notice of than I should have

"coil should be 3 ohms static resistance is less than 2.7 ohms will cause failure"

a quick check revealed my coil was in fact 1.2 ohm not enough resistance and I cooked it.

I sent it back to Wayne at Hyperpac and now I must plug the guy I have read people saying that e is bad at communicating and hard to deal with I had the complete opposite with him. He emailed me and then followed up with a phone call to see I had his email he worked over easter to repair the Hyper pack that had blown up and returned it to me quick smart. I really can not be more impressed with his service and his communication is fantastic.

So got it put it back in the car (with the correct coil) and boom.

Possible the smoothest idle I have seen in a carb car ever you almost want to change something to make it sound tougher.

Starts first touch of the key idles without chokes on when cold and I have only reved it to 5500 but it jumps up there like its been munching on blue pills.

will road test tonight and report the result.

also got the dash back in and the front seats (factory ones) bolted up.

    All left to do is.

    top up radiator with coolant

    wheel allignment

    a couple wires

    mount chilli bin

because a update isn't right with out a photo I polished it while I was waiting for the Hyperpak to return. looks great

  10. The Auto Sparky is booked in for monday so now to get on to the nicety's

seeing as this car is built for gumbootrally (1000km of driving in a weekend) cumfort is important to my old body.

step one fitting Teroden sp300 - its like dynamat but has more of an OEM look and is around half the price. I had a little Dynamat left over so I used that too.

I got this from Car Colors if anyone wants to use it you cut it to shape peal the backing off and use heat (a fair bit) to mold it down id suggest a two man job and allow a couple of hours but the results speak for them selves.

good time to give the car a good hose out too.

    Fuel Pressure Reg.

as mentioned above had no puel pressure reg.  Did some hunting and Malpassi have a pretty good rep.

Webber Specs seemed a good local place to get one so after a quick discussion with the guy there I got this.

they were alarmingly cheap with tires so I got them so it would be with in its cert until I can decide what to do next.

They look better than I thought pretty happy with the result.

fitment looks great and with out driving it looks like it shouldn't rub.
