Out of curiosity, what defines a 'non frontal impact compliant vehicle'?
-
It's fucking 'orrible.

Hes right. Rides pretty firm on the bags but no squat when towing.

I use one of these. http://www.trademe.co.nz/motors/used-cars/bmw/auction-722532668.htm
Just have to remember you have a trailer on the back. A trip to the gas station will do that though.

I'd probably go for an RX4 coupe, the sedans are second yuckest RX around. RX3's are a damn cool looking car, but leaf rear just doesn't cut the mustard. Though I guess as an investment (which is all I'd be buying one for) they're probably the safest bet
Importing a LHD car doesn't appeal
/I'll just buy this
The 4s have leaves (leafs?) too.
I still love 'em though. They're unreliable and chronically thirsty with cart springs in the back and brakes that work once and cost a fortune to buy and maintain. What's not to like?
cept maybe the stigma that goes with them....

4 coupes were always my fav. There were a couple of rough/workable bodies available before Christmas at about $6k which I was tempted by...

Lacquer's easier to spray and if you don't mind working on it, it can last a long time.
It'll always be softer than 2 part paints though which means it's far more easily damaged.

Thanks for the feedback. This is helpful.
Boring "back in the day" story ahead, please feel free to skip...
I've owned a few rotaries (73 RX3 coupe, 73 RX2 sedan, S1 RX7) and had mates who had rotaries (RX2s, RX3s, RX4s, RX7s) including a couple that raced RX3s. That was a long time ago though, back when you paid 3.5-4k for a tidy coupe and 7k was crazy pricing you paid from a second hand car yard. All my mates (including me) moved on from rotaries over the years but after looking at a couple lately I've got the rotary bug back. I'd say that I know my way around a rotary engine well enough to be dangerous, lol.
Familiar story. Selling me RX4 coupe was a huge mistake. Also recently got curious about returning to the wankel but the prices being asked were too rich for my liking. They're a great thing but they're not that great. 15-20k goes a long ways elsewhere.

Yes, very nice. Keep going.

I have talked to a friend of mine in some depth about this, all he did was spin up an extended bronze bush for the crank spigot, and bolted a bit of 12mm steel plate onto the block, which he had vertically in an engine stand, then then plonked the gearbox onto it and marked the holes, drilled and tapped and away he went. I think it has been in his car for 10 years now and he hasn't had any trouble.
This was to put a w50 behind a turbo 4age.
This is my plan when/if I go ahead with the V8 to I6 box. Cant be too hard right? right?
-
I figured it would not stay around for long, so went over and bought it straight away. (another one sold last week through Turners DVA for over $15K !) I removed the parts I needed from the wreck, and sold the rolling shell to recover some of the outlay.

Who are you selling the bits to? Any special contacts or just outta the ol' Trade Me? Have an E39 to get rid of soon.

Maybe this is the greatest failing of the Govs persistent blathering about speed limits. That when they finally create a campaign that focuses on something else, all people see is the reference to speed in it.
I honestly cant see any 'normalising' of behaviour such as the pulling out in front of a car barrelling along the open road and the implication that you and your kid are going to die.
We will have to agree to disagree.
-
Did that clear up my point?
Seems we get a completely different message from the ad.
To me it says 'Watch out for retards cause they're not watching out for you, even if you are at or near the speed limit'.
Which is pretty much what you said in the 3rd paragraph...
First decent ad they've made imo.
Edit:
In other words, the attitude of New Zealand drivers is that, "that dude has brakes, and I'm pretty sure I can make that gap provided he sees me and uses those brakes a little bit so I can sneak through" which usually applies to modern cars, maybe not so much older ones and the best advice anyone can give to make our cars safer, is to make the driver the safest possible driver. If you get the feeling someone is going to do something stupid, give yourself time to react just in case they do.
This getting a little silly arguing over the point of an ad but...
Isn't this kinda the whole point of the ad? Is this what the ad is trying to change? Stop trying to make that little gap cause this is what's gonna happen and it'll fuck your shit up pretty bad?
-
The thing I genuinely hate about that ad, is that it normalises bad/lazy driving behaviour which is the reason our cars are "unsafe" and implies that by simply slowing down then WHEN you crash it wont be as big a mess to clean up.
Not exactly sure what you're trying to say here?

Best safety device in any car, new or old, is the nut behind the wheel.

Yeah, my quick guess on their calc thingie was $215 odd. Ha them. Shurly we can do better.
-
Any one else got any bright ideas re shipping? Preferably from a North shore depot.
-
Herro.
And just so you know what you're looking at and stuff, here's some pics.
Hence $50. No worries if you're going to respray. The electric release is broked too. Do you have a lock barrel to transfer over?
Front guard is probably best panel on the car. Also $50. Just looking at covering the cost of the donor car.
Also, NZ/Euro spec. Wider plate recess than Jap.
Also, also, dont mind dropping into a depot on the Shore with it for ya. Cumbersome alright, might need tips on packing ha.
Also again, what plans for it? Curiosity.
Oh yeah, and both fogs are broken. Were square style.

Chuckles. This slack bugger really should have formed moulds. Guess it can still be done sposse.

g'day maaate.

Fuck me, they look sharp.

Drove down to Hampton for the Icebreaker last weekend and while there we set it up on the scales.
No driver and about 1/3 tank of gas. Around 20 ltrs.
A bit more than I was expecting tbh. Also surprised at even weight split front to back.- 1

+1 for the S1.
Enormous amounts of fun to be had.
Just dont slam too much or you'll end up backwards in a hedge.
Towing cars, what do you use?
