  1. a nice cheap GT for sale on TM at the moment, no connection with the seller of course;)

Wagons are rare, as are 2 doors. You should get a wagon for similar money as a 4 door, but usual rust problems apply. You will pay a premium for a 2 door though, and most were GT's or Lotus. I haven't seen a 2 door non GT or Lotus  in a long time in NZ, if ever!

Had a mate once who owned a 2 door Mk1 1100 thingy brought in from Rhodesia.

    /cool story.

seller wants to sell it. could turn out to be a good buy, has been advertising it on the FB rotary buy sell alot over the last week.

Link to said Facebook page? And any RX4 coupe rolling bodies/projects about at the moment?

  3. yep.

a cert for adjustable suspension, basic mods will be from around 500.

scratch built vehicles are dependant on how much work is involved- anywhere from $1200-2000

theres more to it than checking the bolts are done up. youd be surprised how many people fuck it up, thinking they know everything about suspension because they got some coilovers and camber arms in their silvia

That's quite different from this though Cletus. Lance didn't come anywhere near these prices.

  4. So, while back I picked up another donor for this thing.

    It's a V8 mate

4.4 ltr M62 in an E39. 273000ks but seems to run sweet as  and was cheap as chips. Car is a f%$@ing mess but that's by the by...

    And then

Managed to get out and make a start on this. First thing to do is reconfigure the car from an auto to a manual. Did this while it was still sitting in the car, which was easy enough, at least it seems that way, I've no idea what they actually do ha.

Upshot is that the DME no longer looks for the trans comp and wont send any error messages to the cluster. There is apparently also a software update to give us the correct file for the manual (apparently a slightly different tune/idle control) but we couldn't load it as the DME relates to a 840i not the 540i and they didn't have the correct software and so the DME wouldn't accept it. As I understand it anyway :dontknow: . So to start with we'll be wiring it to neutral. Will make very little difference to the way it runs anyway.

    Geeks at work.

Turns out this early girl from 2/96 is an oddball assortment of leftovers from previous models. Still has EWS 2, as mentioned a DME from an E31, analogue signals from the tach and coolant sensor and a distinct lack of CANBUS, of which only the DME and the EGS (trans comp) are connected on.
With the later E46 systems the E30 is running on, this means I'm looking at having to incorporate the older style EWS and most likely the older KOMBI cluster too as the current one is entirely digital/run from BUS.
A later donor car probably would have, more or less, plugged straight in but oh well...

  5. I'd probably go for an RX4 coupe, the sedans are second yuckest RX around. RX3's are a damn cool looking car, but leaf rear just doesn't cut the mustard. Though I guess as an investment (which is all I'd be buying one for) they're probably the safest bet

Importing a LHD car doesn't appeal

    /I'll just buy this

The 4s have leaves (leafs?) too.

I still love 'em though. They're unreliable and chronically thirsty with cart springs in the back and brakes that work once and cost a fortune to buy and maintain. What's not to like?

cept maybe the stigma that goes with them....

  6. Thanks for the feedback. This is helpful.

Boring "back in the day" story ahead, please feel free to skip...

I've owned a few rotaries (73 RX3 coupe, 73 RX2 sedan, S1 RX7) and had mates who had rotaries (RX2s, RX3s, RX4s, RX7s) including a couple that raced RX3s. That was a long time ago though, back when you paid 3.5-4k for a tidy coupe and 7k was crazy pricing you paid from a second hand car yard. All my mates (including me) moved on from rotaries over the years but after looking at a couple lately I've got the rotary bug back. I'd say that I know my way around a rotary engine well enough to be dangerous, lol.

Familiar story. Selling me RX4 coupe was a huge mistake. Also recently got curious about returning to the wankel but the prices being asked were too rich for my liking. They're a great thing but they're not that great. 15-20k goes a long ways elsewhere.

  7. I have talked to a friend of mine in some depth about this, all he did was spin up an extended bronze bush for the crank spigot, and bolted a bit of 12mm steel plate onto the block, which he had vertically in an engine stand, then then plonked the gearbox onto it and marked the holes, drilled and tapped and away he went. I think it has been in his car for 10 years now and he hasn't had any trouble.

This was to put a w50 behind a turbo 4age.

This is my plan when/if I go ahead with the V8 to I6 box. Cant be too hard right? right?

  8. I figured it would not stay around for long, so went over and bought it straight away. (another one sold last week through Turners DVA for over $15K !) I removed the parts I needed from the wreck, and sold the rolling shell to recover some of the outlay.

Who are you selling the bits to? Any special contacts or just outta the ol' Trade Me? Have an E39 to get rid of soon.
