  1. oh, also - can i reuse my flywheel bolts? and do i need locktite or whatever its called?
  2. Well, I dont have that tool, but...... i can manage a screw driver, hammer and sidecutters. Ill give it a go cheers
  3. thought id start this in the hope that i can get advise on some of my questions. chur
  4. thats everything out just before i gave it a clean. get rid of the greasy shit on the cross-member etc. Gonna take the flywheel somewhere tomorrow - where is good? BNT? Also want to know how to change CV boot - i'm just not sure what tool i need to do up the steel rings that hold the boot on?? Cheers
  5. Got the gearbox out this arvo. Things to do this week: 1. Going to give the engine bay a bit of a clean. 2. left outer CV boot is split so ill fix that while its out. 3. Gotta get flywheel machined and get a new clutch too.
  6. legend! perfect! got 70% done this morning. chur
  7. Hey, Got inspired by Toot toot timmys GT so i thought id start a quick thread on my GT. Was a mint little runner till the headgasket went. pulled the head off but unfortunately it was the block surface that was corroded Currently being pulled apart for a new bluetop to be installed. wanted to keep it bluetop rather than newer 20v or something... The car is pretty tidy all over (even the leather interior), paint is still great, interior mint apart from small rip on drivers seat. 217km's, lowered and 15" ae101? rims. Ive got the full set of original 14" too. Also has the VERY important front lip! few photos of its current location (unfortunately has not been driven for a month or two!)
  8. ok, planning on taking the box out this weekend. Just had a quick look and i don't know what is the easiest way to do this? I could just start undoing shit till i work it out but prob better to ask and then do it properly... Where is the easiest part to disconnect so the axles can slide out? I assume i take the axles out while the box is in place - i.e. not enough bend in the joints to allow the axles to slide out as the box is lifted (if you know what i mean..) also do i have to drain the gearbox fluid first before pulling out the axles? Cheers
  9. haha, thought so. ive never really worked on FWD's or CV's etc. Where/how should i disconnect gearbox from axles etc? do i need any special tools? chur
  10. Managed to pull the block and rest of engine etc out today. to make room for a new one. I pulled it out but left the gearbox in place - was a f*&kin mission. How have other people done this for FWD 4ages/ae82's? i pretty much had to strip everything off the front (water pump, mount, alt, PS, AC.....) just to get enough room to move the engine to the left to get the clutch and pressure plat out of the bellhousing.bloody FWD's!! Im thinking it may have been easier to pull the whole thing out with gearbox etc??? I want to be able to keep/put as much of the new engine together out of the car so i have room. But i dont think it will go back in with the gearbox still in there? thoughts.... atleast now i can go about cleaning up the engine bay and accessories before putting the new engine in. chur
  11. hey man, that sounds like exactly what i'm after. I'll PM you cheers
  12. haha, yes i have read it. I've Got a 2zz-ge in my fielder. Not enough skills to undertake that swap though unfortunately.
  13. cheers bro, yea id be keen on some details.
  14. so, if i was to get the block machined...what do i need to do? i assume they need pistons and everything removed to machine it? I could pull all this apart but i dont know whats involved with putting it back together? balancing etc? Is it best to just give them the block all together with pistons etc and get them to do it all? bores looked ok but am i likely to need a hone/new rings? what about the bottom end bearings? best to get these replaced? any idea of costs to get machining etc done. What about getting another good condition block and putting my pistons etc in it? I might be weird, but i want to keep it bluetop rather than a newer 20v etc. and i have not seen any for sale lately on trademe etc. Cheers
  15. gave it a clean, here are some photos - doesn't look that bad to the naked eye but when viewing these photos it looks a lot worse.... oh the joy of it all!
  16. Gave the block face a little clean up with 800 grit wet and dry, came up a little bit better but still about the same. Still got to clean it up more and the head - will post some pics when i can. IF.............i was to put a gasket on this could i expect to get a little use out of it? whats your thoughts? I was thinking it may be a good idea to buy me a couple weeks or a month to find a good replacement engine. It will also give me experience in completing the process from start to finish as i havn't done that before. Anything i can do with the pitted area (without getting the block decked) to try and increase the life of a new HG? When i remove this 4age i might use it for a rebuild and put my RWD bits on to replace my 4k engine. Just weighing up my options really. Cheers Dan
  17. got the head off finally, bit of a fuck around but not too bad. looks like the drama was around the 4th cylinder. the block doesnt look too healthy to me but what do you think? see the scoring around the cylinder edge..... i have not cleaned up the head face yet to see what it looks like but i will and ill post some pics of that too. i really dont want to have to take the block out.......... but will it be a waste putting a headgasket on this? cheers
  18. i think the prices i got were just the top gasket set. about 240+gst for toyota...?
  19. got some prices from toyota and partmaster. that price includes: head gasket engine gasket set water pump tensioner cam belt head bolts the head gasket itself is quite cheap in the scheme of things.
  20. Hey again, Bettery is a sealed unit and i checked it with a tester and it said it was sweet, also started up this morning so i think its OK?. My father in law (not mechanically minded) took the car to the local mechanic who he knows. The mechanic did something where he took 1 spark plug off and started it up? apparently water/steam came out the spark plug hole? which is not good. This is a second hand description so im not exactly sure till i get home from work and talk with him.. Mechanic seemed to think head gasket or cracked head etc. Looks like ill be taking off the head to find out the damage and whether its just a gasket or the head. Ive got some prices for gaskets/belts/pump etc etc and to get all parts is looking around $550. I've heard i need new head bolts too? if a head plane was needed what sort of $$ would i be looking at? Cheers
  21. ok cool. will try the battery first and then go from there. we will get to the bottom of this!! haha
  22. also...........it has overflowed water out the overflow pipe from the plastic radiator reservoir.. Thats a new symptom that has happened before either..........
  23. Just checked charge across batt when running = 14.3V which i think is sweet - therefore Alt should be sweet?. Ill try a different battery when i get time to rule that out as a problem. It was hard to start though, like the stater motor was struggling to turn it over past the first "click", then kinda managed to just turn it over...? IF its not a crappy battery (or dying starter motor), is there any reason why the engine would get harder to turn over? Once slightly warm i turned it off and back on, started sweet. once I started it up it ran pretty crappy for like a minute (semi 3 cylinder action) then idle went sweet. The oil on the dip stick looks a bit more brown than usual too...... This 4age has only done 220,000km so should def last "4age's" haha
