yeah, id been keen to know how you get on dave.

How long is it supposed to last tho? It sounds like an excellent product from what ive read - but does it slowly break down over the years and you find out its stuffed when it starts leaking again and uv got bits of the 'skin' all thru the fuel lines and carb - thats what im aprehensive about.

Hi all, I had a couple of small pinholes repaired on a petrol fuel tank on my ute with solder by the local radiator shop about 10months ago, have been all good up until now i noticed one is leaking a small amount again. it also has a dent in the bottom i wouldnt mind pushed out but cant get to it thru the sender hole.
I have heard about the por15 repair kit which sounds good but would prefeer a proper fix if its possible. a second hand tank is not really an option as it took ages to find the one iv got and its the best iv come across by far.
Was wondering if there is a place anywhere in N.Z that specialises in fuel tank repair/restoration?
cheers

Try PG hydraulics, theyre are in auckland. I sent my steering box to them to be reconditioned and they did a good job. Only place i could find that do that sort of work. 09 274 5871 is there phone number.

Swann can make exceptions, im under 25 and they insured me. No set km limit but they wont insure daily drivers. They were the cheapest i found and have a decent policy with agreed value.

Just wonering if anybody has any good tips/ideas on d.i.y dash board recovering. have seen a few cars on trademe with a light gauge type black carpet sort of material stuck on to tidy up a cracked pad. has anybody had any sucess making a cracked dash look neat and tidy without sending to be profesionally recovered?

Mongol, yup its your old motor / seedy als , just looking at giving it a freshen up before intsalation and maybe a mild cam, depending on cost. nothing wrong, just looking into options. I may end up running it as is as it a good runner in your vids

they also have a deadbolt function where the door lock cannot be opened by sticking a bit of wire down the window and pulling on the linkages etc. wont stop a theif but still helps.

wanting to do some paint stripping on my inner door panels before i por15 them.
Just wondering on what the best mehod of clean up is after all the paint has been scraped off?
The label on the stripper sugests to wash down with water to remove the excess after stripping the paint then wipe down with turps after. the guy in the paint department i brought it from thinks this is ok
i have since been told by a painter that water is a big no no as the metal will be contaminated, he suggested to lightly scrub down with thinners & a wire wool pad followed by a final wipe down with this de oxidiser stuff you mix 50 50 with water (cant remember the name).
what is the tried and tested mehod? i dont want to have the metal rusting away under the por15, however was thinking water may be part of the chemical reaction to neutralise the excess.

sorry to jack the thread but where do you buy theroswitches from?

Wanting to get my ute cab media blasted of some sort, what are the pros and cons of either sand or soda blasting?
The cab is stripped bare and off the chassis. It has a small amount of rust/bog but nothing major just 30yrs of wear/tear/road grime.

It is the shitty design of the switch gear, real common in d21 navaras/datsuns. Had a similar problem with mine ended up replacing the unit with a new one as i couldnt be bothered cleaning/bending the copper fingers every few weeks.

caprice looks sweet in black... is that a caddy in the background of one of your merc pics? looks nice too..good work

Are these number plate lights legal?
http://www.trademe.co.nz/Trade-Me-Motor ... 095508.htm
I want to use some on my ute but dont know if they will be legal, they look very bright and blue light if that matters?

Wanting to know what the go when swapping a gearbox that uses a cable operated clutch into a vehicle that uses a hydraulic operated clutch? would the norm be to modify the clutch setup to suit a cable or somehow convert the gearbox to suit hydro set up? gearbox is a 5speed holden (v6 vn/vp commodore vintage)
any advice appreciated
cheers

cheers for the replies as i thought, not expecting alot from an old motor but just wanted to check if they had any massive problems with age being alloy and all. I dont have any engine re-building experince so would rather pay more and get a good motor to start with. A latter model lexus v8 would be better but the rover would be more than enough for my application and is a much cheaper alternative.
I read on wickipedia that rover manual trans were prone to breakages? that maybe the earlier 3500 models tho i think. do the water galleries corrode massivly? other than that they seem to be a fairly robust engine.
will have a look out on tme for the toyota adaptor sets. i think most people just run them with factory autos in conversions it seems..

what 5speed manual gearboxes/bellhousings are compatable with this motor? are there any common faults with this motor and what is the longevity of the aluminium motor like? are they any good with high kms?
cheers

that grille/lights look to be early 80's l200 maybe? 200 isnt too bad considering its worth 100 in scrap alone + other bits that are salvagble. would certainly be unique, but alot of work.

Is there any easy way of identifying what ratio a 720 diff is without opening it up? would the rear diff on a diesel 4x4 720 be the same as a 2wd diesel equivalent?
Sorry for jacking the thread btw

Cool car mate. HB cosmos are awesome. Also you can get piston powered Cosmos, they are jap import - full spec but without the rotary engine. N.Z new are all badged '929' and usually lower spec. Coupes are also avalible in piston and rotary format. Good luck with your project!
