  1. I've now dropped into Auckland and am pleased to see plenty of oldschool stuff going about the streets, (plus i saw a good drift from a early 80s beige lancer round a mini roundabout) but dont know if any good oldschool stuff is coming up.

I'm looking to do a magic bus tour fairly soon and check out a few sites up north. any noteworthy old school keeping an eye out for?

  2. With my imminent arrival in NZ one of my mates who has a ford zepher 6 wants me to get him some parts when I am over here as he has heard that you had quite a few of these cars and a better availablity of spares.

Is this true or is he gonna be disappointed. I personally would be surprised if it is.

  3. did a track day 2 days ago and had to use my daily driver at very short notice, all I had time to do was check the oil, water and tyres. Car went fine but the brakes faded out a fair bit, would have definately put 5.1 fluid in if i had the chance.

  4. Also rebuilt the engine several times cos i didnt do it all in one go which was a big mistake.

More recently got some better wheels on it and custom coloured stripes.

Poluybushed it last week in preparation for trackday on the 19th. Also got another rolling road session booked on wednesday. This is what it produced last time.

  5. Having just sold my mkii RS2000 in my sig I have found out the new owner wants to paint it black, which I wouldnt have sold it to him if I knew he was going to do that. (well i would cos i needed the money). Fair enough when you buy an old school car you want to put your mark on it, but that is toooo much

Anyone else had a similar thing happen?

Really? i think you shouldn't have sold it if you cant handle the fact that not everyone likes that crappy yellow colour :?

I appreciate it is his car now and he can do what he likes with it, but as a total classic ford nut, i see it as foolish and a waste to colour change what is a pretty rare and currently original RS Ford which i spent countless ££ getting its crappy yellow colour nice and shiny.

Think I will stick to rat look cars in the future.

  7. True if you have the skills to make the bits then it's not too difficult, but I certainly dont.

There was a really good guide to fitting the zetec on the cheap with home made parts, but the site is now down.

You are right that with just building an engine on its own the pinto wouldnt be the cheapest to get 200bhp, but i was thinking in the situation if I wanted to fit an engine in a mkii i would also need to buy all the conversion parts and the pinto needs minimal extras to fit.

  8. where is your thermostat positioned in the system compared to the radiator.

When my turbo capri kept getting hot we found that the original thermostat position (after the rad) was not helping things, so chucked it and fitted a new one in the system before the rad, which helped massively.

  9. I was never that blown away with my princess/257mm bmw disk set up, but my calipers were not in great condition. I also tried playing around with volvo 4 pots but wasnt happy with the amount of metal left once you filed them out.

Have put together this mazda rx7/bmw 300mm disk set up but not used it on the road yet, I hope they are worth the effort. Though I think I went too big on the disc diameter as they only just scrape under my 15 inch steels. Would need 16 inch alloys to clear them.

    standard vs 300mm setup

  10. Just remembered another occasion when my turbo technics capri alternator died and I had to get the AA out to tow me home, they contracted a local recovery firm to get me back and the driver was just the biggest knob you have ever met.

After about 60 secs of conversation I knew the hour and half journey home was gonna be like pulling teeth. Typical know it all about everything and I was wrong about everything in his opinion.

I got the usual "put a bag of cement in the boot" advice to help handling, which is always given by people who have never driven a capri. If i had a £ for every time i had been told that......well i would have enough money to buy several bags of cement to put in the boot.

He also went on about his ford granada he used to have that did 40mpg and would destroy all sorts of fast cars, attributing it to the "special" injectors he fitted. They must have been special injectors to go with his special needs.

  11. Just wondering what is the biggest load of bullshit you have ever been told about a car.

yesterday I met a guy who had a rough looking ford sierra XR4x4 who proudly told me that it was 465bhp. "Ok" i though, "perhaps he spent all the money on the engine and not on the body or the tyres". So he offers to pop the bonnet and i'm expecting to see a mega cossie YB turbo and all that is there is a standard looking 2.8 cologne, which apparantly has uprated "cams" and a rebore.

I thought it best not to argue but i think his power figure is just a bit high, like about 300+.

There arent half some idiots about.

  12. Well, I will be starting off in Auckland and then work it from there. Have no real plans once i have arrived but want to check out both islands and will have to get a job at some point, doing what i dont know.

Thought it best if I get out of the UK for a year or so as am fed up with all this doom and gloom recession stuff. It is on the TV and radio 24/7 and the papers are full of it. Though admitedly I'm losing my job in a few weeks time so it has affected me.

Fear not, although it is correct that we get all the recession crap here too, if you are heading over here for all the reasons most people from the UK decide to head to NZ, even Auckland will be a revelation. I ended up here (originally a Nelson bogan, lived in the UK for 13 years though) due to work only, but I think it's pretty cool. Fully understand why others wouldn't like it though.

But doing the tour will help make your mind up, just be aware that some parts of NZ are awesome to visit, not so great to live in.

I can fully appreciate that a place to visit isnt always a great place to live. Have heard the phrase "ping pong poms" where us brits come over, enjoy it start with because of better weather, exchange rate, low living costs etc. But have too high expectations about living out here and after a couple of years go home, then shorlty after decide it was actaully better in NZ.

  14. thanks for the replies, that should pretty much sort me out. Just interested to see what motorsport i can go and watch later in the year. Do a bit of drag racing and track days in the UK but doubt i will be buying anything thats gonna be worth trying out on the strip when i'm in NZ.

trackday sounds good L'N'S but wont be over yet, shame.
