  1. If you bring it by here I will look it over gratis.

If it needs adjustment I can set it up for roughly a couple hours labour, assuming bearings and pinion etc in good order.

  2. whaaaat theeeee fuuuuucckkkkkkk did not know those existed.

i did notice the rocker covers looked wrong for a bmw but figured perhaps an aftermarket replacement or something.

    pretty sweet replica though!

It's sidevalve, I sold this not so long ago. So good yet so bad Enfield bullet spec- some bits come off in your hand and some bits are indestructable.

Be a great candidate for a bobber.. Reliability of the electrics is laughable

  3. The only photo I've been able to get of the Cortina

Some other cars I've come across recently

I just caught up on this thread and I remember hearing about this car. An old friend of mine who has been selling the weird and wonderful crud here in Wellington for 46 years now, was telling me about this when we were talking about the only good Cortina (mk2's). He told me about a red LHD mk2 two door that came into the country as a private import from South Africa?-(he thought) manual V6 factory. It was first owned by the same mechanic who used to work for Archer and Lupp who fitted a E Type V12 to a Ford Capri here in the 70's. Another old hot rodder and long time panelbeater in the area confirmed that he did a lot of bodywork on it in the 80's after an accident and painted it a darker burgundy. He also confirmed it was a European market Cortina Savage, a rare and desireable car. Last either heard of it was in the late 80's when it was stolen, never to be seen again. Presumably cut up.

Seems there may be more to this story, either way it deserves to be saved. The value of a genuine Savage making it economically viable.

  4. Anyone know of someone in AKL that has experience in old euros that doesn't charge in euros?

No, but start with air filter and checking for vacuum leaks. 9 times out of 11 the fuel filter is the number one problem with rough/rich running on a K jet, from experience.

Start here, don't let anyone talk you into fiddling with settings, a quarter turn either way on K jet equals doom.

Check and make sure ignition timing is bang on also

  5. Far out, not the first time I've seen brass sheet in a cam bucket. Billy bodger gets around.

That crank definitely looks sketchy. My guess is someone rebuilt it in a hurry after oil starvation. Slapped it together without much knowlege and just chucked bearings at it randomally. Send it down for grinding and balancing if it's not too thin of metal.

Bin it's oil pump if you go to bolt it back together.. The cam wheels look sexy as tho

  6. Only one way and that's the right way, unless you want to convert every accesory to spade terminals etc, the time saved and the amount of materials involved in making one of these looms I would charge double to make one from scratch. Remember how many gauges a Daimler has and the fact the loom is attached to the dash so it can fold down for access.

I can fit up a factory loom in a couple of hours, all labelled and colour coded as per factory, new bullets etc. worth every cent of the money.

Also when people bring me vehicles like this for pre purchase inspections I warn them off any without the correct loom, so good to think of the resale value.

Really don't mean to sound so pompous and close minded. This is just what I do for a living day in day out..

  7. Sorry, worst suggestion ever..  It will never look right and the Mk2 range is one of the best catered for models for spares ever.

    David Manners  http://www.jagspares.co.uk/home.asp

I have used these on a couple of MK2 restos, lovely braided looms. Remember the Alternator loom is different to the generator one and you need to order the separate gauge loom and rear harness for a complete rewire. get all the grommets too and the thing will look a million bucks

  8. Under rated cars, my specialty topic..

As pre '98 SAABs and almost all the Volvos have had a mention, I will add my favorite car for the last five years..

    220px-Rover_620ti.jpg

Not just any Rover 600, but the SLDi model. I'm on my third now, great handling, well put together and more torque than a group of housewifes.

Great for towing car trailers, doing front tug hacks and embarrasing Subarus.

I'm wrecking one now I used to own that has done over 600,000k's and is sweet as a nut mechanically. keys were lost and unavailable now due to over Rover..

    (one downside)

Brought another one with aircon, two owners, towbar, tidy and legal for $700...

GT15 turbo, intercooler, forged pistons as standard and produces 120hp from factory. Boost now wound up and silicon hoses all round and I get 45mpg all day long, better on trips..

Not bad for a two litre diesel engine that started life as a petrol in an Austin Princess.

Oh and attracting no attention ever from thieves, the law, vandals, girlfriends fathers etc due to old man Rover badge.

  9. One should be fine, did it have a third one further downstream?

How many wires to each O2 sensor? You would have to give a signal back to the ECU via both plugs so splicing together may be an option

  10. ypt3.jpg

not a badge to be found ANYWHERE on the car, inside or out

but going by the style of the widened steelies and that exhaust along with what looks like fibreglass body Im picking its a VW SP1 or similar  (Puma?)

Definitely VW floorpan, I think Herald front sidelights and Billy Bunter tail lights. Nice lines.

  11. Oh yay, another grumpy old man thread..

You all forgot the first rule of lazy journalism, let some lobbyist organisation write it for you.

I think we are all giving this far too much worth, since when did anyone read Stuff.? Realistically as a MTA member this 'marketing and communications manager'

will be getting a swift kick in the dick. He obviously forgets he represents the majority of mechanical, parts and service providers in this country with any worth.

Good one on pushing the blame squarely back in his own court. Remember that MTA was hugely apposed to warrant changes, the argument that our cars are better looked after as a result versus worldwide statistics. Emissions- good lets flog another dead horse.. Safety, sure I guess his new Hyundai has enough airbags to save his tofu from bruising in a roll over to the next lycra riders meeting. But then I guess it's our fault for this poor economy blah blah fuck I'm out someone else take over

  12. The carpark in Countdown was built to also accomodate patrons of other local businesses. Part of them being able to get the resource consent.

So technically as long as someone buys Rice Bowl we are sweet, as long as no one is disorderly they can't move us on.

It also is a double level carpark, I suggest we meet on the lower level as it's mostly empty
