  1. Has been an interesting read this thread, Basically whatever you purchase will require another few grand thrown at it if it hasn't already been set up.

Most people I know have started off with Suzuki's of various models as it is a good vehicle to teach you to drive, take lines and read the land and if you flip it over, they are light enough you can get them back on their wheels and minimal damage is done. I have seen them out drive bigger 4wds and also they don't sink into mud holes as much so less strain on gear (and you hardly ever get asked to recover people)

Cam's thinking of a Paj is a good one but I would avoid a LWB one, they are heavy and have very little clearance without mods being done. We took a guy out on a trip with us and it took over an hour to get him out of a river with two cruisers on the front and a lot of winching, he promptly sold it and brought a LWB 70s cruiser and has loved it ever since.

We do have a couple of learner types who have SWB pajs and they really enjoy them, bumpers of course will need to come off as that is the first thing you will rip off and the rear one stops you from opening the back door, not handy when your lunch is back there haha but they do tend to pop a wheel when you hit things at pace and result in smashing CV's quickly. Also soft top will be destroyed/ripped on first trip unless removed before hand. .

There is of course Toyota tax on any hilux and landcruisers etc but if you keep an eye out you can find a bargain around but that depends if you want to go with something long in body.  Has its advantages and disadvantages so you need to make that choice.

Patrols do come with things like factory rear lockers but don't be fooled by that, they have no suspension travel at all and you will spend the whole time driving around with it in to get up the easiest of things

As people have pointed out, Jeeps are very thirsty and that has been the main reason people in my club have sold them but you can buy almost anything for them from the states.

I managed to stumble on a bargain and picked up an 80s landcruiser for 6.8k, factory winch, factory front and rear locker and diff lock and a whole pile of other nice little things, It will walk almost anywhere which is fine for me as I don't need speed but it is a tank and its wide and parts aren't easily come by and whatever you do................don't buy a petrol one unless you own shares in a fuel company.

  2. hire a trailer you sting

Or think of something you need from Mitre ten mega that will need a trailer also, use trailer for free.

    Profit

haha you got trailer for free because I worked there  Dork! They aren't really free to general public, Got to put deposit down and get it back in time, Weekends they are really strict about it but week days they are a little nicer

  3. yea would definately run highway tires for normal road use. not so bad on the wallet either having to buy new mud tires all the time.

just wondering if I should look at buying a 80 series atm

Partners got an 80series, has 35 creepies and they are not ideal to run on the road, they will lane hop on the motorway by a good Metre or more if you dont have a vice grip going on the steering wheel, He put on mudstars of all things on his other rims, last set lasted him 8yrs with a bit of off roading. and they don't walk on the road

also one thing to look out for in an 80 is crazy cracking under the steering box, every 80 does it, if it hasn't been fixed it will be coming your way at some point, just lots of little hair line cracks hiding away under the steering box and they have a massive flaw with their handbrakes, the cables stretch all the time, our handbrake is a block of wood

and get one with the triple diff lock in them  they are awesome but sadly cost more and you can also just put a spring lift in them and fit 35s on them piece of piss

  4. how rubbish do lift kits make 4wds when it comes to towing stuffs? do they wallow around?

thinking 80 series landcruiser if that matters

depends on the kit and the vehicle. if you keep swaybars attached and aren't going silly high I wouldn't think it would be a big deal in an 80 series. take of swaybars/make disconnects for offroadtime.

RB30 in any patrol would be puss as shit unless it had the crap supercharged out of it. pratols are really heavy.

biggest problem will be if you raise the 4wd up, your tow ball goes with it so the arse of your trailer will drag pretty damn close to the ground, Just keep it in mind

    Rusty boot

    More rusty boot

    DSC00161.jpg

Dent in the top of the boot

    DSC01033.jpg

15hours of pissing around the the guy managed to fix my boot. They left the Lock out though

so still need to get them to add that part in haha

    DSC01032.jpg

Just random shots of the car sitting at the panel beaters. still needing sanding

    DSC01031.jpg

    Another shot

    DSC01029.jpg

    another

    DSC01027.jpg

And some paint for the first time in a very long time. Colour white for the roof.

  6. The doors are currently on the move at the panel beaters. Just dropped the hinges and chrome off so they can line them all up correctly and get them straight. Then onto the bonnet and boot and then on to be painted.

then attempt to put it back together which should be amusing. Been so long I've forgotten how too haha

  7. DSC00768.jpg

The drivers foot well had some pin holes in it

    DSC00933.jpg

    After

    DSC00795.jpg

Rust in the back air vent(drivers side), also found some rust on the inner skin of the air vent

    DSC00794.jpg

    Passenger side.

    DSC00935.jpg

    DSC00939.jpg

Choose to delete the vents themselves and keep the holes for the vent to bolt back onto. they did nothing but cause a draft the rear of the car.

  8. So I've been told by a few people to put some more photos up

so 3 panel beaters later, finally found one who could do actually panel beat not fit panels

Has been one massive headache but finally some progress.

    DSC00168.jpg

My boot floor, you can infact see my petrol tank through the rust

    DSC00770.jpg

the rust at the back of my boot

    DSC00945.jpg

    DSC00944.jpg

after they panel beated it, and coated it with some black stuffs

Rust in the back rear window

  9. Foh Sarlay?!

Someone give Al a big kiss from me when they see him next. He's so adorable.

sure is - he wants to be a Wagoneer - saw the error of his ways by owning a sedan.. LOL

Oi you :P dont pick on the sedans!! just coz youve got extra glass to clean

and john, good to see your making use of that fridge the supplier never collected haha! Will see if I can make afternoon piss up spence

  10. Has anyone else noticed these stupid issues seem to come up annually, yet nothing ever happens? And even if it does, it doesn't affect them? Me too.

yip because the govt has to make it look like they are doing something about the issues that they cause due to their fuck ups, if they make a shitty way to fix something that pisses a whole lot of people off, when they just push it to one side and "forget" about it and never put the plan into auction, or put a very mild version of it into action, the public feel like they have won and it looks like they did something about it, when really! they did shit all

  11. This was in the dom post the other day

    http://www.stuff.co.nz/dominion-post/ne ... ul-driving

he has a good point, "Mr Dalziell said he was concerned classic and vintage car enthusiasts could be penalised for having older vehicles if the measure was introduced, despite tending to be extra careful because of the time and money invested in their cars."

If this goes ahead, I think they may just leave out cars classed as vintage and classic as there will be to much arguement from places regarding this,Like the guy said, They represents such a huge financial outlay. not just some poor person who cant afford to buy a newish car with flash safety stars, if anything they cost more to own.

If that went ahead im guessing the cut off point would be the same as cheaper classic rego. so your car would have to be 40 years old to quiaify?

atleast one of my cars would fit the classic gap haha and i have no idea what rating my curren has

  13. that sounds pretty good, some insurance companys go off market value so your 8k car soon turns into a whole lot of money for nothing

i plan to get my car on some sort of classic insurance as it will be the big 4...0 next year :) which wil be around the time the panel beater pulls finger and gets it done. so will keep this in mind :)

    thanks for the info gaz
