One Saturday arvo I was out the front of our place trying to free up stuck rear drums on an old parts Mitsubishi Galant GTO stuck in the driveway and this newish car pulls up (we live out of town) and this well dressed young man who turned out to be Jehovahs Witness gets out - shirt/tie/pants/leaflets etc.... and says "nice datsun". So I told him na bro is a mitsubishi galant gto and he was all like sweet car can I talk to you about god. I said yep as long as you don't mind if I keep working on these brakes. So he talked about god and I worked on my brakes and he asked me about my thoughts on the current government and I said I don't really care and he was like would you like to make a change and I was like - na I'm pretty good thanks so he said I'll just leave you these leaflets and I said "just put them in the window of the gto coz my hands are dirty and the leaflets will get dirty and I won't be able to read them" and his parting gift was "Good luck with the datsun". I wanted to get angry because he didn't listen to the one thing I told him that was important and I listened to all his horse shit but all I could think in my head was - What Would Jesus Do..
I don't even think Jehovahs Witnesses believe in Jesus so that was odd.

Did you realise there is an oldschool.co.nz Facebook page? That'd be my suggestion.

Congrats she looks great. Saw that pop up and wondering if it was a 2+2 but obviously not. Good score!

How would one go about sourcing a set of flares like this? Any originals/repros available or do they need to be fabricated from scratch?

Hi DriveBy
Its in a state of restoration at the moment but can post pics if you want.
Cheers
Definitely post up some pics - start a a thread in the projects section. Even if it's just a rusty shell!

How did you find having no seat ?
Wouldn't fancy doubling someone on it. It'd be a tight squeeze.

Just saw you guys on the show Along for the ride, bikes are absolutely aweeeesome!
Me too. Was cool. More slam please.

Detail depot was online. Got the Meguiars compounds 105 and 205 from smits group also online + clay bar/detailing spray on special for cheap cheap.

Coincidentally I went to 4 stores today looking for that exact thing and bought the 2nd on the list above from super cheap, it works great especially with the random orbit.
The guys at repco had a nice mothers kit with one of those 2 handle polishers but I backed off once I saw the polisher had a 60w motor.
Driveby, where did you buy the extra pads from?
Lake Country pads from detail depot. Not cheap but were good, think I got blue, white and orange from memory.
Have a quick google about the difference between a DA polisher (the second one) and rotary polisher. I think you need to suss a good technique for the rotary but it can give better results but also can damage paint if used incorrectly. DA can't do damage but needs more effort/pressure to get good result.
-
I have the second one and used it to cut/polish the daily. Black Beemer with swirls etc.. Bought good quality pads online of different density, Meguiars 105 and 205 compound and it did the trick really well. Good thing with the DA is you can't fuck it up, the rotary apparently you can do damage to the paint if you don't use it properly. Don't think I've got any before and after photos but it was good, would trade again etc...

No help on the russian deal but have you tried Thailand if it's Mitsi parts you are after? I have ordered one seal from them that is NLA from Mitsi Japan/NZ and waiting to see if it turns up. Will let you know if you want and quality etc.. Supposedly OEM Mitsubishi.

Max passengers and still be travelling a long way or just max people jammed in a car? Can remember back in the days when no-one cared about seat belts being one of 11 going to scout camp in our leader's XC Falcon sedan, 5 in the front, 6 in the back. Brother's mate taking 8 in a Mini must have been even less comfortable though.
Column shift but Scout Leader still trying to floor change with his wandering hands?

Awesome. $505 is an awesome score. I use to race starlings and sunbursts in my younger years and use to think it would be great to cruise around in one of these "when i got old". Good effort.

Sorry Orion Fels my bad checked both old 88s details and they were both a183a's so looks like you are right. That'll be a euro import with the 2.0l 8v. My bad! (Should have just cheeky edited my post).
-
Bet Phil will tell us that no widebody should be a183a! I've owned 2 UK widebodys, both 88's with redtop 8v 4g63 and both were a187a's. Mitsi Foamers = The Blue Smoke Brigade.
-
Thats def not a jap import from your other picture. It's a euro import or possibly NZ new. Has euro front number plate holder, EX decal on the side which was euro/NZ. It's either been assigned the wrong VIN or has tags from a narrow body. A187a should be the chassis code regardless of engine size unless widebody DASH then will be a184a. Still cool!
-
That is pretty weird. Chassis code is A183A which is narrow body designation. 88 2 litre also pretty rare from Japan, most were 2.6l But fuck me low k's! Something is wrong there!

Have owned a couple of 3k's, one in a ke20, one in a ke36 and they are pretty reliable. The ke20 was a flat car in Dunedin and it wasn't looked after well, never had any issues even after the leaking radiator ran out of water. Top speed we managed was 92 miles an hour downhill but was ringing its tits out. Will sit on 100k easily if you can stand the general noise. KE36 leaked quite a bit of oil from engine, diff etc but just top up and go and never had problems. Had done close to 300k too as far as I can recall. Get one. Easy to work on, parts are cheap, resale seems good too if you hate it. Good luck.

Headed to Auckland and spent a bit of a mission weekend picking up this parts car. Car had been sitting in a barn for 15 or so years, hard up against a wall, rear brakes locked on, all tyres flat and the shed was at the bottom of the steepest driveway ever. My brother got his work van stuck, we broke the winch on the trailer getting it on. Tow car was probably not the best - an old auto e36 328i and the transmission was stinking by the time we got to the top of the Brynderwyns. Got home eventually:
Had a good look over it and it appears to be pretty solid. One bit of rust in the passenger A pillar, a bit in the right rear, boot is rusted through, other bubbles coming up here and there but nothing serious. Rubbers are all shot, sunroof is crap and the roof has been walked on at some stage. Has obviously been kept dry for the last 15 years.
Everything is there except the engine which was blown up causing the car to be put in storage. The car had been dismantled and we chucked the doors back on just to get her home. Front guards are fibreglass and all the rest of the panels are present including a front fibreglass spoiler which is relatively rare.
Too good for parts so will become another project. Thinking repower with a SOHC 4g63t just because they are easy and will give a bit more power.
Oh it was rolling/not rolling on what I was told were old cheviot mags but when I got there I was pleasantly suprised to find they were actually on 13 inch Hayashi Streets. Missing one of the front ones though which I will need to get hold of. Plan is to roll them as is. Even down to the white writing balloon tires.
Still on the look out for a parts car too!

Have you thought about getting upholsterers to bond material to the underneath surface to hold the split together and reinforce the whole section? I have the same problem. Like a big patch glued to the back to stop any seams splitting. It won't be seen if done right. Could also reinforce passengers too.

I once took a red Starion to a classic car show when I was living in Ireland and I overheard a young lad say to his dad - "Dad look at that Ferrari". I shit you not. Probably got a hiding when he got home from his dad Paddy.
