Awesome thanks so much guys.
I don't particularly want to do the timing chain just the seller has been told by Weber Specialists in Aucks that it'd be worth doing this first before tuning the triples. Apparently it's fouling plugs.
I wouldn't mind the odd fang with the triple carbs if they are reliable once set up properly. Don't really care about economy/global warming that much. If they are not going to add a whole lot of performance then I'd quite happily do as above and sell off. Original manifold and carb comes with the car.
Please keep any more thoughts coming!

Seriously looking at a VJ sedan with a 245 and triple webers but Mitsubishi's and Jap cars are my normal poison. Can any Valiant guru's answer a few questions?
What's the manual three on the tree like for driveability - around town and open road?
Seller says the car is running rich and tells me he had been recommended to replace the timing chain to see if this sorts things before looking at carb tuning. Is timing chain replacement pretty straight forward/logical to tackle myself? What about tuning the triple webers?
General thoughts on the VJ and Valiants in general? This will be a cruiser for the weekends with the family. Kids seats in the back and surfboards on roofracks is what I am thinking.
What problem areas should I be looking for?
Where does the $ value sit for these in good nick?
Any other thoughts gratefully received!

No cambelt if that's a problem for you either.

One of our cars is a 2007 3.0 litre h6 legacy. Think they are 180kw from memory and I wouldn't call it slow. Or boring. Is auto and shifts could be better but hey. Takes the whole family, two kids in car seats, luggage, dog in the boot, surfboards on the roof etc.. Have had it a few years now and it's up to 230k with only regular maintenance. Has paddle shift, radar cruise control etc so pretty well specced. Haters can hate but they are a solid choice for a family car. My two cents and I've owned a few legacys/not keyboard warrior.

$1k for some NOS Mazda RX-3 10a headlight bezels = Mazda Tax > all other scene tax
Split screen Kombi tax would rival it would it not?

The consumer guarantees act is the vaguest piece of crap I've ever read.
Also only applies to business "in trade" so doesn't mean shit in this instance unless you are trading in cars. Tell him to get fucked, it is quite reasonable to expect an old car to have issues.

Paint stripper gun work or overkill for heat? No butane torch unfortunately.

Cheers Snoozin,
Time is a serious issue. Run my own business + young family bla bla so spare time is Sunday and that's family time so need to send to someone to do.
As far as nut seats I tried to whack the damaged one out with a suitably under sized socket and a hammer and no budge. Any hints?
-
In Whangarei but will send anywhere as long as good service.
-
Yeah that would be cool if you don't mind? I'm quite happy with that sort of cost. 500 + gst per wheel is BBS Rs rebuilding sort of money including new lips. Not too keen.
-
I actually have the nut seats too. Will talk to Pine. They are opposite end of the country but would rather give the business to someone not taking the piss. Have a set of Watanabe's and a set of BMW wheels I want refurbed too but I think I may be going elsewhere for those too. Any more recommendations definitely welcomed!

I know there have been a few recommendations in the past. I have a set of techno trv one piece wheels that need some work. Rears are pretty much ready to paint centres but two of the nut seat inserts are chewed out so these need replacing. Fronts need to be stripped, centres painted and lips polished. I made an enquiry through wheel fix it as they come recommended and got this email back:
Morning Driveby
A rough idea of cost to strip the wheels, prime and re-paint the centres - then machine the outer lips and clearcoat would be approximately $500.00 +GST per wheel. If the wheels already have inserts fitted we wont be able to replace these unfortunately as they are a set size and can only be fitted once. We would also need to check that the wheels are straight as they can't be machined if there not.
A booking would be required and you will need to allow around ten days for the repairs.
Seems excessive to me and they can't fix the main problem the nut seats. I included multiple pics. Is this dude taking the piss? As well as the exorbitant quote he reckons ten days turnaround. Not impressed.
Does anyone have any recommendation for someone more realistic that I can send off the wheels to to get sorted? Should I email back a picture of my "nut seats"?
Top pair are the front which need strip/paint/polish, bottom pair are the ones that need centre paint and 2 nut seat inserts replaced.
Don't have the time to do it myself and just want to send to someone to sort who gives good service. Am I expecting too much?
Advice/opinions/ideas please!

That would be known as low balling a poor old cunt.Id offer him $1000-1500 for it.
Edit: unless the old dude thinks that's a fair value in which case good score.

Fuck supercats they are shit. Squeal at the slightest hint of traction loss. Wouldn't trust them to stop me smacking into an old cunt from a rest home pulling out on me in front of the local dairy. Good tyres are the most important bit on the car. Better to get some second hand tyres of a good brand then fuck around with ching chang whatever's.

I'm sure DriveBy meant dizzy driven by the crank in the early 4g52. The later engine have the dizzy out of the head and have balance shafts.
Whoops my bad yes. The earlier engine is considered a better engine by all accounts.

Check out this link.
http://www.galantgto.net/number.html
Has chassis numbers for various models. Yours appears to be a GSR but 1973. Has the corresponding early engine too (dizzy is out the head = early 4g52). What's it registered as on Carjam? I have a couple of GS models and those chassis numbers are accurate for those.

Checked the timing?

Any limits on how loud you can go? Train horn out of the question?

Love how that article talks about the 120y and 180b but no time for 240z/260z. Poor.

Any piners interested in a Series 4 FC3S for $5k?
170k, black, (supposedly) standard, 5spd manual, has just had fresh rebuild.
Where and any pics?

Cheers. I was hoping you'd make an appearance in this thread after your help with the GTO.
Does the gas consumption = performance or nah?
No Vinyl roof. Is ranger xl spec. Will have to check the rust situation out. Not a car to buy sight unseen then?
All balljoints/bushes etc.. pretty easy to source and replace?
Thanks again.
