  1. Kinda lame update but first mod so thought Id better post

The factory horn was farked so instead of buying a cheap plug and play replacement, used as an opportunity to install these puppies that my dad had been hording in his shed.

They are off a 70's Nissan President, and were actually not as easy to install as you might think as pretty huge and wanted to leave a clear path around the rad for future intercooler and piping. In the end found a sweet spot though, whipped up a bracket.

    Installed (though not yet wired)

gonna be a case of asking i guess then.

fuck thats dumb, ive spent the last two years thinking about all the things illegal about my car and the wof guys only ever pick up on the major things, im going to have to actually point out a bunch of stuff to fail me on.

and yeah will be ian smith in chch, as thats the only option left. have heard ok things about him. don hoff who was very hit or miss as i hear (maybe hes the wof barry??) has retired or something

I can't remember who it was in chch, I do recall he was a GC though and he obviously enjoyed his job watching his ear to ear grin bouncing off the rev limiter during the speedo test

Agree asking for a WOF is kinda dumb, especially if WOF guy doesn't pick stuff up. I'd prefer to do everything to a high level and go full disclosure with the cert guy for best insulation from law and subjective WOFs down the line. Would be annoying to be failing WOFs for something that could've been certed but never was

  3. Hey fellas, wondering if anyone can recommend a supplier for 2.5" and 3" 304 stainless tube and bends for exhaust building... Have bought a fair amount of stuff from Sinco and they have been good but at ~$45/m for 3" tube and ~$30 per 90 am wondering if there's a cheaper way to go

Any ideas? Waikato based all the better, cher

does anyone know what trailer hubs are made of for certain? are they cast iron, cast steel? have turned down a n.o.s trojan hub for a spare wheel holder hinge which will mount up on my rear bumper . have seen one done before guess it should take a bit of weight with some good welding. turned it down with an angle grinder worked really well as i don't have a lathe. Looking out for some heavy 4x2 box and heavy 2x2 to glue up a rear bumper as the rear chassis rail looks weak as.

got the 80 series callipers apart, getting them blasted this week, brought a seal kit for them too. also came across a 80 series steering box apparently they are a good upgrade but can't find out why?

finished welding up the roof today came up better than i thought it would.

What's yer plan with the trailer hub? Prolly being daft but how do you mount a spare wheel on that?

  5. Must've been lols pulling up outside the international terminal in your multiply illegal landcruiser road train, good shit.

Re height, I reckon drive it for a while and see how you like it. 35s + 2.5" lift springs + 2" body lift is prolly a good place to be I reckon, should be well capable and definitely shouldn't be too scary on the road (even if missus still has to jump)

  6. Yeap full float, looking badass with the new tyres btw.

For brakes I just dredged my email and for calipers I used KZN130 ones and the standard 60-series rotors, easy mod as they are a straight swap and should be same for yours (40/60/70 series stuff is all mostly interchangeable). I left the rear with drums, recall there were relatively easy disc upgrades but the new calipers alone made a decent difference so I left it there.

  7. Wow that sucks re the rust man, hopefully some gurus on this site can recommend something there...

Re the semi versus full float diffs, I believe the cruiser semi floats use a c-clip design to retain the axle though I have never worked on a semi float. As per comments via PM the way to tell what you have (semi versus full float at least) is if yer hubs protrude out from the mounting face of the wheel = full float.

Re brakes there are some good bolt on caliper upgrades you can do, I forget what I had on my 60-series but think they were from V6 surf, and I believe the big Sumitomo (eg Celsior) brakes also were a straight bolt-on. Google to check as some years have passed since I did mine, made a noticeable difference with 35s (and EFI Chev 350) on big heavy 60 series though...

  8. My old 60 series (green truck in pic above) had longer shackles, was scary to drive at first with constant micro steering adjustment to counter the wandering steering but once I shimmed the diff to rotate the axle back to normal (ie fix the castor), it drove mint.

I also had a 2" body lift, I reckon its a good way to lift actually as you're not lifting the center of gravity as much as lifting the entire chassis like you are with springs. You don't get the articulation benefits but getting the biggest tyres you can with the smallest change in centre of gravity is the win, as clearance under the diff counts for more than chassis clearance in my book

  9. Looking good man, did you take it for a scrape around the block?

Reckon 1" body lift and new 2" springs will clear the 35s? My mate had a sprung over 70 running 37s, unfamiliar with what it takes sprung under though

truck looks tiny with that massive mutt on the back, will pick up that parts truck in a few weeks and I'm happy to part with the 5 speed, would the seats work too? I'm not sure if it has power steer or not yet.

Haha yeah he's a big lad, truck does feel pretty small by today's standards though, I'm only 5'11 and feel like I wanna slide the seat back a further couple inches (but is already hard against cab).

Would be mean to grab some parts off ya, figured out my truck has handbrake on the transfer case so I would also need to grab with transfer and some handbrake bits to make the 5-speed work. Interesting cause either my ute has an older style driveline retro fitted, or the US spec info on the international cruiser forums isn't relevant to NZ trucks as apparently late model 40s are supposed to have handbrake in the rear drums (making 5 speed swap easier).

raging fan. pined at one of hese in hataitai the other day, did it have white wheels when you got it? if the same one, i hope you laughed at the modern version of same colour scheme just round the corner when driving past.

Nah wheels and tyres were bought last year says a receipt in the glove box. Yeah those new FJs are funny looking, when released I thought they looked weird but expected they'd grow on me - except they haven't
