  1. A lot of British and Australian steel used to have a little or steel alloy tag in the engine bay sometimes they were stamped/pressed with the numbers, often when stamped the stamps were horrifically shallow and would wear over time along with the paint that indicated fields. Some cars had none at all, some cars used the engine number as their VIN number or vice versa, which is stupid but hey.. that's how it is/was.

The chassis number is still clearly visible in the engine bay, I wonder if I can just get away with stamping a tag with the listed VIN number? Worth a crack, I'd hate to resort to something illegal if it doesn't  , serve the powers that be right for making it so bloody hard to get perfectly safe vehicles back on the road! :x

  2. old cars dont have a vin

see if you can find a number stamped into the firewall, or more likley the radiator/bonnet catch panel

Hi, Thanks for your reply, the ownership papers have a VIN number listed, which isn't the chassis number. The car was an Aussie import and re-registered in NZ. I have all the info, just not the actual plate. (My current on-road Capri has a VIN plate too since it has been re-registered from "dead".)

Such a major pain the ass if I have to go through all the certification etc.

  3. I have a similar problem. Have got a Capri project car that came with some live plates and papers but the VIN tag is missing. Someone asked the question before regarding having a new plate stamped as I don't want to have to go through the hassle and expensive of having the car re-vinned.

Already spending enough blinkin' money getting it back on the road!

  4. Cool, the more the merrier, my Capri is pearl golden/orange with black vinyl roof so please feel free to say hi if you spot us.

Trying to convince hubby to get his '69 Mk1 Escort ready too, it's such a cutie and far too awesome looking to be hidden away. (Hate to admit it, but it's even better looking than my Capri!)

  5. Just to let you guys know that there is car show in Wanganui this weekend (Sunday 16th), which by all accounts should be good.

Also, All Fords day in Palmerston North Sunday 30th March. 209 John F Kennedy Dr, behind Red Fox. Entry is by gold coin.

My car will be there, so guaranteed to be good - LOL!

(Unless it breaks down between now and then, being a Ford and all!)

  6. mean as caprigirl, what kind of condition is it in? got a digital camera?

Car really good, hoping to find a for sale sign on it one day. Black with chrome and old school mags. It's been sitting on this elderly lady's front lawn for months now, she maybe storing it for a grandchild or something, if I spot her I'll ask. Have camera but unfortunately friend has our card reader at the mo' so unable to post picture. Will do so at later date. Still haven't found any full photos of my old Coronas, hence why I haven't sent them through. (I've only found ones with the odd corner or rear of cars at this stage.)

Hey Orion, what are you waiting for!!! Get it, and get it now before someone else does. God, if I had the money I'd be in like Flynn, you can't lose!

  7. I'd still get her if I were you. Engines are easy enough to replace, it's bodywork and interiors that are hard work & money. They're not making any new ones!

    Good luck.

Hey Corona, there's this amazing looking '70's Corona coupe around the corner from me. Never seen one before, looks like an RX3, veeerrry nice!

  8. aww boe guts to hear!

should be just either stale fuel and/or ignition troubles

iv seen 12a's start up after 6years sitting under a bench with just fresh fuel through the carb and some new plugs

You're right about rotaries starting up after years in storage. Mine had been in my mum's garage for 8 years and never turned over in that time. Couldn't believe it when it started after putting in new fuel and a jumper pack on it. Also has stuffed apex seals, smoked like Hell most of the way to our garage about 15kms away. Unreal.

Hope the '7 turns out okay, wish I could afford to bring in a car or two, or three or.......

  9. I agree there are heaps of underrated cars out there. I've seen a couple of Triumph TCs and PIs that look great. Also, of all things the old Austin "land crabs". The GT versions with mags etc look really quite funky. Hillman Imps, the odd Fiat etc....

As I say, each to their own. But I also agree with Treggo, the Mk2 Capri is kinda ignored but I think this is due to the fact Ford mucked up the styling by over sanitising the exterior. I'm sorry to say that they look bland to me. Mind you, I got the latest issue of the Capri Car Club NZ mag today and on the back cover was a picture of one in Hamilton painted up as the General Lee! A bit of fun.

  10.

    The Capri under-rated. :lol::lol::lol::lol:

I think you'll find that as a whole, the Capri is over-rated.

Over-rated, I don't think so. So they may not be sporty, snappy and handle as well as a lot of other OS cars (and there are plenty, I'm not one-eyed), but they do exactly what they were designed to do and do it well. In spite of their shortfalls they still turn heads. But each to their own I say :)

(Besides, I have my S1 RX-7 for fanging in!)

  11. Capri.

Honestly 90% of the ones I have seen have been modified poorly or are owned by 70yo men that drive them till they rust to the ground.

Or they are done in a half ass "yank" style.

I agree with Treggo - I bought the most poorly modified Capri you ever did see, (it was known in Capri circles as the "That Ferrari bottomed Capri!"), and yes I have seen a lot of Capris rusting around their owners too.

I do think they are totally underrated and when done properly look smokin'.

(I must add that mine has been rectified and it looks damned hot now!!)[/i]
