Spotted in Taupo today. Totally unrestored, just looks like a typical older car that gets driven daily.
I sure do like the sweet hotwires and 'tang decals on the doors.
According to Tomstament, an old lady who lives locally owns it. I wonder how many of the boys are waiting in line to purchase it off her?

Governorsam generously donated this Pioneer CDX-6105Z to my collection over the weekend while I was down south for the meet. Massive thank you sir!
After getting home from Hanmer I looked through various catalogues and turns out it's a factory option CD player for the later Series 4 FC Rx-7, which is damn close to Sam's original guess of it being from a Familia/Laser like the tape deck in my previous post. I thought it was too; the similarities are there but the button design and colours are slightly different, and the plug doesn't fit the Laser tuner module.
So I don't have any way of testing it just yet, at least not until I manage to acquire some factory Series 4 audio as well.
As mentioned in spam, it also caused some minor consternation going through Customs on the way home! I'd packed it carefully in my carry-on luggage and naturally the scanner at Christchurch airport picked it up as my bag was going through the machine. The Customs officer who then had to search it promptly started foaming once I'd unpacked it for inspection - he was an esoteric vintage and retro audio collector of some sort. He was cut short by the lady behind me also needing her baggage inspected, and seemed mildly disappointed at losing the prospect of spinning an epic sharn.
For reference, this is the CD player mounted in a Series 4:

Could be keen also pending accommodation.
Alistair, I think VIP just gives you access to catered meals and the concert later in the evening.
Not sure how it was done this year but last year (when we all parked together as a club) was choice as. If I remember right, you just had to say you were an OS member to be let through into that area.

This is reasonably priced for a standard Aussie Series 3 Rx-7. About the only thing I can fault is that it's automatic.

Hmm.
Maybe I should buy a JC Cosmo to daily, instead of that other kind of Mazda I want

Calling all regular attendees and new! Time to start thinking about this year's Highlands 101... Fri 11th thru Sun 13th November 2016 in Cromwell, Central Otago.
This year Jonny/Kiwi808 has kindly volunteered his house, situated halfway between Cromwell and Wanaka, as a possible base of operations. Stay posted for more details to come. Last year we ended up doing a heap of exploring/sightseeing in addition to spending time at the track, which worked out pretty lush. Perhaps for 2016 we should check out Wanaka instead of Queenstown?
In the meantime, post general event discussion and itinerary ideas here!
Choice.
...where did you find that random Asian tourist?

All of the foam dribbled out.
Thanks once again to MLR and Stacked's Yahoo delivery service!
This is one of the factory option component headunits for the 1985-87 Japanese Ford Laser, as seen in the catalogue at bottom left. Will be used if I ever go down the restoration path.
Also, suppose I should post a photo of the only item I scored from Palmy Swap Meat 2016:
Had been sitting out in the rain for a while before I stumbled across it, lying untouched in a trailer full of Valiant parts. After I paid the old boy he started spinning a yarn about how he'd pulled it out of his old VF after it ended up in a ditch upside down, and his mate cheerfully chimed in with "yeah that's right, I was in the car at the time!"
Left it to dry in front of the heater back at the motel for the rest of the weekend, but I'm yet to hook it all up to see what happens.
It's all a bit beaten up anyway, and if it doesn't go, at least I can use it all for spare parts. I'm not sure who made the bracketry, but it would definitely hurt if swung at someone in anger.

Had to look twice to make sure it wasn't mine as I'm still at the other end of the North Island and it's supposed to be locked up tight at home.
Wheels, side mouldings and the fact it was in Nelson allayed any fears though. Also totally mangled and it (still) looks like it's got a straighter driver's side lower sill than mine. Trolol!

Time to stock up on FCs. Although I am tempted to buy Kramer.
I'm actually disappointed that killerbee dude got scared off the forum. I would have bought a whole car off him for parts if he'd stuck around.

I was there for a very short time. Only OSer I saw was Rusti.
There were some sweet Italian cars to gawk at (Integrale, 500 Essesse, Stratos, 125 sedan) which broke up the mundanity of every second barry getting a wheel going in their V8 "because it's wet, ooerr".

Plenty of roads down those ways to try and see how close to 330km/h you can get...
Scenic route from Dunners to Invers. Turn left off SH1 at Balclutha by the Ford garage.
That's a quaint little Ford dealership. Also on Google Maps there's an orange KE70 on Tridents outside the Z next door.

Can't decide if I love that kit or hate it.
Do like the colour and the turbo.
I like series 3 Rx-7's too.
It's not a crazy $$$$.
Do I need it?
Triangle.
Yes.
Ditch the wheels though.

Dat kit...
The front is quite common, but you hardly ever see the rest of it.

Omaka's collection must be looking a lot more anaemic now that half the fleet's been sold through Turners.

I was feeling a bit glum about missing out on a really sharply priced set of AW11 MR2 TRD springs, but to my surprise/delight when the car finally turned up from Japan I discovered it already had TRD springs fitted.
I've also found random Japanese parking tickets/receipts, an Omron pedometer, an original dealership "For Sale" sign, JDM cigarettes, JDM cigarette butts, the occasional flare, and a Boowy bootleg minidisc.
Oh and lots of 100 Yen coins (underneath carpets) - but usually leave those where I find them.

I wonder if anyone's done a Longreach XG ute (basically EF) front end conversion on an XD/XE/XF.

Every so often I trawl Goo-net to see if there are any sweet Series 8 FDs on offer.

I have imported a bunch of series 2 and 3 rx7's with 150 to 200km on them. Just wondering the best way to flick them off. They are all left hand drive. Would sell all running gear needed for a conversion. Thought that if the engine could be test driven that would be a bonus compared to buying something off the garage floor ya know?!
For what it's worth, I'm looking for a complete grey LHD Series 3 interior (and have been for several years now).
Could be tempted to pick up a whole car at the right price too.
Where are you located?

Ohura pics are a+
Agreed. The old general store and the Ford garage next to the Cossie club are pretty sweet, wonder who owns them.

Ohura
If you hear anyone yelling "YO' SHO GOT A PURRDY MOUF BOY", gun it out of there.
Stupid useless fact: my friend nearly bought the old St. John Ambulance station in Ohura. Seems like the perfect place as any to get away from it all and stash a few "barn-find" cars.

'80S KID redux: 1986 Toyota AW11 MR2 Super Charger

Took the AW11 on another roadtrip to do some late winter/early spring snowboarding at Turoa and to explore the Central Plateau area. Slacker.Cam and myself had already done a bit of recon work during the OS Nats scavenger hunt, and I'd mentally filed away a list of places to come back and check out when I next had the opportunity. As luck would have it, the weather played ball (for the most part).
On the way down I stopped at my usual rest area on Waipapa Road for a couple of snaps. This is kind of a ritual for me, almost every car I own has been photographed here at some point.
For reference: AW11 #2 and AW11 #5
Then after a lush trip up the mountain to do some snowboarding I hit the road again for a full day of exploring. The conditions were nearly perfect and traffic was unusually light for a Friday, which meant I made good time between each destination.
First photo stop, the Rangipo power station and Poutu intake. There's not a lot to see at the power station, just a weathered old concrete sign and tunnel entrance built into the side of the hill, with a locked gate that you can peer through into a creepy, dimly lit tunnel which leads underground. It's almost completely silent here, with only the occasional sounds of gunfire and explosions from the army training nearby to interrupt the peace and quiet.
Tomstament mentioned to me later that Rangipo is entirely remote controlled from Tokaanu power station.
Backtrack up the road to the intake and you can drive across the structure to the other side of the Tongariro river, where they sometimes launch whitewater rafts (I did this a few years ago, and it was choice).
Then it was back onto the Desert Road for some amazing views of the Tongariro National Park area. When I'd set out from Taupo earlier in the day it was clouded over, miserable and gloomy, but one of the Desert Road webcams indicated that conditions were nearly perfect on the Central Plateau, so I crossed my fingers and hoped that it would stay that way. The further south I drove from Taupo the more obvious it became that I'd lucked out.
One of the scavenger hunt stops for Nats was "underneath a power pylon", or something like that. Thanks to this earlier excursion I already knew to make a beeline straight for the Tukino skifield access road. Wew lad, the vista I found when I finally got there makes me appreciate this little country we live in that much more. I'd hoped to be able to travel a bit further up the access road but recent snowmelt and rainfall made it almost impossible to traverse past a certain point without 4WD and a bit more ground clearance, so I called it quits at that point.
After a late lunch in Waiouru I checked the time and calculated that I should be able to carry on to Taihape and at least make it some of the way down the Gentle Annie road before having to turn around and be back in Taupo by dinnertime. So I made sure the tyre pressures were still good, bought a bottle of water to stay hydrated, and carried on my merry way south. The kilometres flew by and soon I was at the turnoff just outside Taihape:
Old barrys will tell you that the Gentle Annie is a shadow of its former self now that it's completely sealed - but that just makes it perfectly engineered for a tiny low-slung mid-engine sports car. Over hills and through valleys the road meandered once I'd passed through the small hamlet of Moawhango, and I rolled the windows down to listen to that glorious sound of that supercharger with the engine wound out in 3rd gear.
After a series of corners through light forest and a small gorge, the hills opened up again and in the valley below there flowed the Rangitikei. The road dropped sharply to the valley floor and at the bottom I came across the old Springvale suspension bridge that once served as the river's crossing point, alongside the modern concrete structure which replaced it.
At this point I figured it was time to retrace my steps back to Taupo, so reluctantly I swung the AW11 around and headed back the way I came.
Definitely have to revisit this part of the country again once I've obtained some better tyres, sharpened up the handling slightly, and fitted the extractors for a little more oomph. The plan will be to leave Taupo early, traverse the Gentle Annie, have lunch in Napier, then set off back to Taupo again on the regular state highway (which, in itself, is a pretty fun drive in the right car).
Apart from a bit of wind and cabin noise which is to be expected from a car of this sort, I really have no gripes about the AW11. Pretty stoked really. It's definitely my best go-to car for roadtrips (provided the conditions aren't totally shitty) and it has nearly the right amount of power to keep things entertaining. With the previously mentioned tweaks I reckon it'll keep returning a great smiles-to-miles ratio for years to come.
Cool story bro.
