Hey man, cheers for the offer. It's in Nelson proper from what I can gather.
What other details would you require...? Would need to get you to pick it up, for starters!
-
Sup Mainland OSers...
Just wondering if there's anyone in Nelson who wouldn't mind picking up and storing a car for a couple of weeks until we can organize getting it to Auckland? Reparation/refreshments will of course be provided if needed.
Doesn't have to be kept anywhere special, just off the street would be good. All going well I imagine it'll be gone from your life by the end of November.
Let me know, cheers!
Thanks
Ed

They did mention the Escorts turning up a couple of months ago. Seemed like a good event.
Looking into journeying back there before Xmas with a couple of other collectors to have another look through all the 'treasure' and perhaps purchase some of the unwanted memorabilia.
And yes, for those who are not familiar, Ohura is located in the middle of bumfuck nowhere in the King Country of the North Island. It's essentially New Zealand's best known living ghost town (mainly because Stuff journalists like to write the occasional article about how the place is "dying" every couple of years).

Recently embarked on the fun task of helping a friend drive a 1955 Mercedes 180 up to Auckland from Wellington. The vehicle's top speed is about 55mph give or take, so it was decided that a two day excursion was the best plan and as a result we could take our time and explore some interesting roads along the way.
After an overnight stop in Taumarunui, the next morning we embarked on a journey through Ohura and the Forgotten World Highway to Stratford. It was in Ohura that we met an interesting lady by the name of Liz, who had recently purchased the old Ford dealership once known as Kallil Motors. When the Merc rolled into town she promptly threw open the doors after noticing it come to a halt outside, and invited me in for a look around.
She opens the place up by appointment on weekends and was hoping to get more car clubs interested in visiting via word of mouth. So far a few V8 and bike clubs have cruised over from Taranaki and they were in the process of trying to organize some people to come over from Hamilton and Rotorua. I asked if she'd seen a random Aston Martin or a bunch of slammed wagons drive past earlier in the year - unfortunately she said nope, haha. During the week she works in Taumarunui while her husband Chris likewise commutes back to Auckland for his job.
Apparently the place was full to the ceiling with junk when Liz and Chris bought the property and they have spent a lot of time sorting through it all and getting rid of most of the crap. Currently it resembles a junk shop more than anything else, but they are slowly converting it into a retro workshop/museum of sorts (think old oil tins, posters, implements, that sort of thing).
They discovered the old petrol bowsers that once sat on the kerb outside, Ford manuals, plenty of old stock, and an entire microfiche catalogue in the attic.
I never knew the place had been up for sale multiple times in the last 10 years, as apparently it sold for less than the cost of a brand new double garage each time. But the building was ready to fall down, and it sounds like Liz and Chris have put in some effort to get it back to a semi-habitable and presentable state since then.
We could have hung around all day, and given them a hand with sorting through more of the items out the back, but really needed to get going otherwise we'd never make it back to Auckland by nightfall. I did promise Liz that I would forward her details on in case anyone from OS is interested in going for a looksee one weekend. She and her husband are slightly more savvy and accommodating than the old creatures at Horopito Motors, and are eager to make connections with car enthusiasts, history buffs, and anyone else knowledgeable to learn more about the 'treasures' they have amassed, as well as try to revive interest in the town of Ohura itself.
Who knows, they may even be willing to part with a few bits and pieces for the right price.
...unfortunately the calendar's not for sale. I already tried.
If anyone's keen to check the place out privately, or to organize a weekend OS excursion - here are the details:
Liz & Chris Dufty
29 Ngarimu Street, Ohura

By the way, Ohura now has proper 4G cellphone coverage! This was only recently installed, according to Liz.

This silly thing keeps getting cheaper and cheaper. 1000cc turbo manual.

Not considered a real kei car as it's slightly larger and more powerful than the regulations allowed, but close enough.

You're in line behind Ant, and I don't think he'd give up without a fight

Yup, the ABS module and associated crap is in a giant tangle of shit in a box that came in the boot.
Same with all of the A/C gear, which was going to be my first mission until this overheating kerfuffle got in the way.
That intake pipe is definitely non standard. Would quite happily stick my spare Evo 6 ABV in place of that bung but damned if I can figure out how to recirculate it without chopping the standard piping.
I may have to fly you over for a weekend of figuring out all this garbage!

Just realized I do, but never uploaded the photo.
Here it is (and now also sneakily edited into the build thread also). It's meticulously tidy, which is a great testament to its previous owners, hopefully I can keep it looking that way.
Red rocker cover as imagined, and lots and lots of piping, wiring and associated gubbins. There is definitely a lot going on.

Both pipes are hot, hot, hot.
(that's what she said)
Have checked pretty much all the obvious shit and really about the only things left are thermostat, water pump, fan direction, and the radiator.
Sigh, you'd think I would be better at diagnosing cooling system issues having owned (and BHG'd) a bunch of Mazda E5T and B6T engines before, which overheat if you look at them funny. Or maybe not

Will have to hunt around for the proof, but pretty sure the water pump was done at the same time as the cambelt and balance shaft belt. Thermostat was also done but I've bought another and will change it myself just to be absolutely sure.
Oh man I didn't even think about checking the fan direction. Feels like it's sucking in instead of blowing out though.
(that's what she said)
Knock off work in just over an hour and a half, will go the back way around Riverhead to avoid the horrific queues at Greville/Consternation, then start investigations when I get home.

Yeah admittedly the aftermarket fans might be garbage too.
They kick in at approx. the level where the first snafflechat picture was taken. They stay on but the temperature continues to rise.
Second picture was before it got actual hot. Sits maybe 5/7ths of the way up the gauge. I can never remember to get a photo because I'm too busy stressing out, lawl.

Still running the L200 radiator. Wanted to replace it with the factory Starion one that I bought off Trademe, it's been sent away for reconditioning and cleaned up already.
Was meant to start fitting it on Sunday, I'd even mounted the original fans to the radiator and gave them a bit of a clean all ready to go. But then I noticed the coolant leak and thought maybe the existing system was losing pressure from not having all of its hose clamps done up tight. In hindsight that proved not to be the case.
I'll keep going with the original plan of fitting the Starion radiator, new thermostat, and trying to figure out how to get the original cooling fan circuit working again. It's not a direct straight swap as I don’t know what the previous owner did with the electrical system to fit those custom fans and sensors, and can already see half the plugs have been replaced with non standard ones.
Can't swap the big electric fans over to the Starion radiator because the factory radiator support bracket gets in the way.

50 points to Beaver, tightening up all the clamps only slowed the problem down. Overheated again this morning (I didn't drive it to work yesterday) but not as badly as before.
Took maybe 15 minutes instead of 5 minutes for the needle to creep past halfway and above the 3/4 mark while sitting in traffic.
Also noticed that idling around the work carpark for 5 minutes causes the temperature to rise significantly.
I haven't really paid much attention to the previous owner's custom fan setup yet, but the L200 radiator has twin aftermarket bazooka electric fans fitted - which make a hell of a racket and look like they pull tonnes of air, mated up to a custom thermo switch in the bottom radiator hose.
What I did notice is that when the fans come on, they stay on for an eternity, meanwhile the temperature doesn't really decrease at all.
Will most likely have to deconstruct the entire system in order for the factory Starion radiator and electric fan to be fitted, but I'm worried that if two giant aftermarket fans don't help cool it down, what hope does a single shitty 1980s one have?
Meanwhile, I'll send that L200 radiator to the shop.

Cheers Philly!
I noticed there's a sticker on the cam cover with the recommended plug gap while tightening up all those hose clamps yesterday. Odd that BNT would sell me the 1.1mm gap plugs, but that's what's listed in their system for G63B turbo I guess.
The spark plugs look like a bish to replace with the turbo and piping in the way, will tackle it after work. Hopefully I won't need to remove anything but I foresee UJs galore!
Oh by the way, that maroon widebody GSR-VR you mentioned earlier was apparently sold to a local film production company.

Ha, yeah for sure. I'm going to be simultaneously pissed and stoked if this turns out to be the issue!
But I know well enough not to count my chickens before they're hatched. Trial by fire will be driving it to work tomorrow.

Opened the bonnet for the first time in close to a fortnight to begin the unenviable task of pulling the L200 radiator out in order to fit the legit Starion one.
Then I noticed this...
A small puddle of coolant, perfectly in line with the bottom radiator hose.
Could the three hose clamps around the electric fan sensor housing be loose? "Nah, no bloody way could it be that simple," I found myself muttering. But then discovered that the pipe was indeed also covered in coolant.
As it turns out, I ended up spending the next 20 minutes tightening every single hose clamp on the car. Intake piping, radiator, oil return feeds, vacuum lines... they were all loose.
In light of this new finding, I'm going to fit all these fresh new service-related parts instead. I'll give the L200 radiator a short stay of execution until after I've taken the car for another drive to see where the temperature sits with all the hose clamps now tightened up.
The engine bay is meticulously tidy, but a typical 1980s nightmare of piping, wiring, vacuum lines and other strange gubbins. At least the radiator is well isolated and easy to get to!

Does anyone know the deal with the big C.H.B. wrecker's yard in Waipawa? Are they strictly "we pull the part for you" or do they allow public entry to the yard?
Didn't get any photos, drove past as it was just getting full dark but managed to spot a few oldschool wrecks to foam over. This here thing was in Havelock North though:

SA22C Trademe prices have been flat for a while. Which serves to reinforce the joke that any kind of car I have in my collection will automatically devalue.
Anyway, speaking of things that are going up in value, here's a LHD Rx-3.

And this is ultimate porno. Swap Series 3 turbo for this?

Rx-3s are cool (especially that hex light one) but just quietly I think I'd rather have a L10A Cosmo Sport.

Also, I wonder how much this FC3S Infini III will sell for?

Maybe their logic was, these are the Mazdas produced with only rotary engines, rather than the ones that also had piston equivalents. But then, it should have a JC Cosmo shown too.
Perhaps it was something to do with the roofline profiles?
You're the designer, you tell me

Have you bought that Series 3 yet Jonny?

Kiwi808/Jonny wanted some Hotwires. Yu bai nao.
Your missing that bit where it is a series three turbo. With a period correct body kit. Which is as lush as the interior.
Wheels are meh, but that's any easy fix. Becuase WATANABESI'm surprised the Series 3 turbo hasn't sold already. Finally worked out where I'd seen that kit, it was in one of my '80s Perfect Book magazines, produced by a crowd called Agent.
ERC and East Yokohama also made copies of the front bumper to go with their cheesegrater bonnets in the '80s.
Series 3 turbos are awesome, I should know. Just get it. It's even a GT-X with the lush maroon cloth interior.

I'll chuck the kettle on, Dave!
Should totally keep those old tablets and bandages & stuff, the faces on the boxes would have died of old age by now.
Yeah, I'll hang on to the original first aid kit contents, they should safely survive the next 20 years in a zip-lock bag inside a Sistema container.

If anyone's after a honest Rx-7 that hasn't been dicked around with too badly, this FC belongs to a dude I bought some old pinball and arcade bits from a while back, now it's up for sale.
Guess the drawbacks are the high kms and low compression.
